Gorham-Stout syndrome is a rare disease and most often recognized in children and young adults. Chylothorax is a serious complication of Gorham-Stout syndrome. The treatment of either Gorham-Stout syndrome or chylothorax is still a dilemma. We described a 9-year-old girl with Gorham-Stout syndrome and chylothorax who was admitted to our hospital because of dyspnea, orthopnea, and bone pain, and treated with interferon alpha-2b.

INTRODUCTION: Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease secondary to an infection of the central nervous system by the measles virus, with no effective treatment. The introduction of therapy with intraventricular interferon alpha (IFN-alpha) and its later association with ribavirin aroused new expectations. In experimental studies the two drugs were seen to exert a synergic effect in reducing viral replication. Therapeutic studies carried out in patients with SSPE with the two pharmaceuticals have offered contradictory findings.

We describe a patient who developed acute demyelinating polyneuropathy on the sixth week of interferon (IFN)alpha therapy for chronic hepatitis B (HBV) infection. A 23-year-old man with chronic HBV infection had acute onset of demyelinating polyneuropathy shortly after completing a standard 6-week course of therapy with IFNalpha 2a. Rosacea fulminans is characterized by the sudden onset of large, coalescing nodules and draining sinuses on the face. A few reports have linked medications to this condition, but none have described the onset of rosacea fulminans with pegylated interferon or ribavirin therapy. We report a patient who presented with rosacea fulminans after initiation of therapy for Hepatitis C.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the activity and toxicity of cisplatin (DDP), epirubicin (EPI) and interferon alfa-2a (a-IFN) in patients (pts) with metastatic melanoma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-seven pts with histologically-proven metastatic melanoma were treated with DDP 75 mg/m2 e.v. and EPI 90 mg/m2 e.v. on day 1 + alpha-IFN 9 MUI/die s.c. on days 4 to 8 and 18 to 22. Cycles were repeated every 4 weeks.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We examined the effectiveness of escalating the dose of interferon-alpha-2b in subjects with chronic hepatitis C who did not respond to usual treatment with 3,000,000 units 3 times a week.
METHODOLOGY: Treatment was started with 3,000,000 units of interferon-alpha-2b 3 times a week. If serum alanine aminotransferase activity was not normal at 12 weeks, the dose was increased to 3,000,000 units daily. A 3.5-year-old girl had epilepsia partialis continua of the right side. Clinical and laboratory findings were consistent with Rasmussen's encephalitis. Between 1991 and 1994, at Hoshigaoka Koseinenkin Hospital, we treated 280 patients with chronic hepatitis C with interferon (IFN), and ischemic colitis occurred in two patients (0.7%) during the treatment. Eighteen patients, 16 boys and 2 girls, aged 5-14 years, with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) were treated with oral isoprinosine (100 mg/kg/day) and intraventricular alpha-interferon 2b (Intron A, Schering Corp.), starting at 500,000 U twice a week and later increasing to 3 million U biweekly. Minimal follow-up of living patients is 12 months; maximal 40 months. To assess the efficacy of interferon-alpha in acute hepatitis C, 28 patients with acute posttransfusion hepatitis were randomized to receive 3 million units of recombinant interferon-alpha three times weekly for 12 wk or no treatment.
