[Decrease in efficiency after experimental virus encephalitis. Small scale experimental tests on mice and histologic evaluation (author's transl)].

Two different experiments were set up in order to test the efficiency of 281 mice which had been infected intracerebrally with yellow fever virus 17 D of various dilutions (10(-1)-10(-5)); the tests were run after two time periods (40--55 days after infection = I. date, and 97 and 160 days after infection = II. date). In the first experimental set-up the animals were to find their food in a labyrinth- after 24 hours without food, (Labyrinth Experiment, Fig. 1). The time was taken from the moment when the mouse was put into the cage until the moment when it ate from the food. 4.37 min, were con

Cogan's Syndrome. High resolution MRI indicators of activity.

In the chronic-relapsing form of Cogan's syndrome, it can be difficult to evaluate the activity of the disease. In contrast to the initial stage, routine diagnostic techniques sometimes fail to indicate progression in the chronic stage. To determine whether high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) can be used to differentiate between active and inactive stages, we examined three patients with Cogan's syndrome (one during an acute relapse, two with chronic audiovestibular deficits), all of whom had antibodies to inner ear tissue (cochlea, vestibular labyrinth). Unenhanced T1-, T2, ga

Magnetic resonance imaging in sudden deafness.

UNLABELLED: The etiology of sudden deafness can remain undetermined despite extensive investigation. This study addresses the value of magnetic resonance imaging in the analysis of sudden deafness patients. STUDY DESIGN: Transversal cohort. MATERIAL AND METHOD: In a prospective study, 49 patients attended at otolaryngology emergency room of Federal University of Sao Paulo--Escola Paulista de Medicina, from April 2001 to May 2003, were submitted to magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: Magnetic Resonance abnormalities were seen in 23 (46.9%) patients and revealed two tumors suggestive of meni

A probabilistic atlas of the human inner ear's bony labyrinth enables reliable atlas-based segmentation of the total fluid space.

Intravenous contrast agent-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of the endolymphatic space (ELS) of the inner ear permits direct, in-vivo, non-invasive visualization of labyrinthine structures and thus verification of endolymphatic hydrops (ELH). However, current volumetric assessment approaches lack normalization. The aim of this study was to develop a probabilistic atlas of the inner ear's bony labyrinth as a first step towards an automated and reproducible volume-based quantification of the ELS. The study included three different datasets: a source dataset (D1) to build the probabilistic atl

Vestibular and non-vestibular nystagmus in examination of dizzy patients.

Observation of nystagmus is of great importance in the otoneurologic examination. By means of electronystagmography it is possible to examine the nystagmus under different visual conditions such as in darkness or with eyes closed. Physiological nystagmus is characterized by miniature eye movements with an amplitude of 4-5 minutes of one degree. With fixation, the amplitude decreases and the frequency increases. Vestibular nystagmus is a biphasic eye movement with slow and rapid phases of opposite directions. The intensity increases when the eye bulb is directed in the same direction as the fas

Cogan's syndrome: a treatable cause of neurosensory deafness.

Cogan's syndrome, nonsyphilitic interstitial keratitis associated with vestibuloauditory deficits, can vary in its presentation. This paper describes an unusual case in which deafness developed while the patient was receiving topical therapy with prednisolone and homatropine for mild bilateral iritis and right-sided nodular episcleritis. The 10-year-old boy's hearing improved dramatically with high-dose systemic steroid therapy. The importance of being aware that deafness may occur in children undergoing treatment for "routine" iritis is emphasized.

Acute vestibular paralysis in herpes zoster oticus.

A case of herpes zoster oticus is presented in which the lateral and superior semicircular canals of the labyrinth were affected unilaterally. The results of several electronystagmographic examinations are described and correlated with the patient's description of symptoms. This case study indicates that disease affecting the lateral semicircular canal is reliably detected by the conventional caloric test. However, the fact that the posterior semicircular canal remained intact could not be inferred from the results of the caloric test in this case. Also the appearance of nystagmus upon eye clo

Role of S-100beta as potential autoantigen in an autoimmune disease of the inner ear.

In Lewis rats, adoptive transfer of T cells specific for the calcium-binding protein S-100beta mediates experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, but surprisingly also induced a marked labyrinthitis associated with impairment of hearing. This suggests that transfer of S-100beta-specific T cells into susceptible animals could be a novel model to study autoimmunity of inner ear diseases. The investigation demonstrated in detail an inner ear involving, central nervous system (CNS)-specific autoimmune disease in order to identify a putatively shared autoantigen(s) in these pathologies. In fact, t

Abnormalities of the stapedius reflex in patients with vertigo.

Analysis of the latency, amplitude, and rise characteristics of the stapedius reflex as demonstrated on a strip recorder revealed abnormalities in patients with vestibular neuronitis and other vertigo syndromes. The findings in vestibular neuronitis, acute labyrinthitis, perilymphatic fistulas, Meniere's disease, cerebrovascular insufficiency, and metabolic vertigo are described. Alterations in the stapedius reflex included increase in latency, decrease in amplitude, stepping of the rise, and absence of the reflex. This study suggests that absence of the reflex can be associated with vertigo a

Cytomegalovirus endolabyrinthitis.

A premature male infant, who died 22 days after birth with hyaline membrane disease, was found to have had cytomegalic inclusion disease at autopsy. Histopathologic examination of the temporal bones showed cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection of the entire endolabyrinth without involvement of the neural and sensory structures. These findings support the thesis that late gestational or perinatal fetal CMV infection results in an endolymphatic labyrinthitis. We hypothesize that blood-borne virus passes from the stria vascularis into the endolymphatic spaces and infects the nonneurosensory epithelium.

[The potential of cone beam computed tomography of the temporal bones in the patients presenting with otosclerosis].

The objective of the present study was to analyze the potential of cone beam computed tomography of the temporal bones in the patients presenting with otosclerosis for the detection of surgically significant specific structural features of the labyrinth wall of the tympanic cavity. More than 400 tomograms of the temporal bones were obtained with the use of a cone beam tomographwere available for the investigation during the period from 2012 till 2016. The study was carried out in several steps, viz. the search for the optimal (for the given instrument) position of the patient, the experimental

Current diagnostic procedures for diagnosing vertigo and dizziness.

Vertigo is a multisensory syndrome that otolaryngologists are confronted with every day. With regard to the complex functions of the sense of orientation, vertigo is considered today as a disorder of the sense of direction, a disturbed spatial perception of the body. Beside the frequent classical syndromes for which vertigo is the leading symptom (e.g. positional vertigo, vestibular neuritis, Menière's disease), vertigo may occur as main or accompanying symptom of a multitude of ENT-related diseases involving the inner ear. It also concerns for example acute and chronic viral or bacterial infe

Factors Associated With Bilateral Involvement in Non-Infectious Labyrinthitis: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Non-infectious labyrinthitis (NIL) is an inflammatory disorder of the inner ear characterized by cochlear and vestibular symptoms associated with impairment of the blood-labyrinth barrier on delayed FLAIR MRI. Although the condition may initially present unilaterally, some patients subsequently develop bilateral disease, which can lead to greater functional disability. Identifying factors associated with bilateralization (i.e., progression from unilateral to bilateral involvement) remains clinically important. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case-control study in a tertiary

Poststapedectomy dizziness. A histopathologic report.

Long-term disabling dizziness is a rare but serious postoperative complication of stapedectomy. The temporal bone collection of the Ear Research Institute in Los Angeles includes 117 bones from patients who underwent unilateral or bilateral stapes operations. Of them, nine patients (8 percent) complained of severe long-term postoperative dizziness. Histologic examination of the temporal bones revealed a pathologic condition in the peripheral vestibular system of seven patients; the remaining two patients showed normal maculae, cristae, and vestibular nerve. Pathologic conditions found were sup

[Weather status and incidence of idiopathic facial nerve paralyses, vestibular disorders, Menière's attacks and sudden deafness].

The authors studied a possible relationship between the weather and Bell's palsy, acute unilateral vestibular disorder, Menière's disease and sudden deafness. These diseases definitely do occur more often at times of low pressure. This is most convincing when a stable high pressure zone is followed by a strong low, thus creating comparatively great pressure differences. Bell's palsy, sudden deafness and Menière's disease occur more often under the influence of the warm side of the low. Such atmospheric conditions could not be confirmed for acute unilateral vestibular disorder.

Inner ear disease characterized by rolling in C3H mice.

A neurologic disease characterized by rolling developed in C3H mice. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated from the middle and internal ears or meninges of affected mice. The principal pathologic finding was aggressive, primary, purulent otitis media, with extension to the inner ear, acoustic nerve, and meninges. Stresses that may have contributed to induction of the disease were not delineated; however, acidification of the drinking water resulted in near elimination of the disease.
