Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) is a carcinoma arising from a primary or recurrent benign pleomorphic adenoma. It often poses a diagnostic challenge to clinicians and pathologists. The entity is difficult to diagnose preoperatively. Pathological assessment is the gold standard for making the diagnosis. Treatment for CXPA often involves an ablative surgical procedure, which may be followed by radiotherapy. We report a case of a 65-year-old lady with a history of recurrent swelling in the left preauricular region and a history of surgery 10 years back, in the same region. Preoperatively,

Angiosarcomas are rare, accounting for only 1-2% of sarcomas in the head and neck region. We present an extremely rare case of primary non-radiation-induced angiosarcoma of the parotid with epithelioid morphology which required a tertiary center second opinion for its histological characteristics. We discuss the presentation, imaging, diagnosis, characteristics, and pathway of this case. As parotid lumps are common, a surgical sieve is required to rule out other possible conditions. Early correct diagnosis is crucial in conditions such as angiosarcomas due to their quick metastatic potential.

Sclerosing polycystic adenosis (SPA) is a rare benign epithelial lesion of the salivary glands, of unknown etiology, mainly affecting the parotid gland. We report the first clinical case of SPA involving the deep parotid gland with extension in the parapharyngeal space and the masticatory region. It has been resected by an external parotidectomy approach exclusively, despite the median extension of the lesion. The objective of this article is to complete the small series of cases described in the literature, and to update the knowledge of this rare disease.

Chondrosarcomas of head and neck region are rare. Very few cases of chondrosarcomas arising in parotid gland have been reported and none with intracranial extension. We report a case of a female presenting with a parotid swelling and a mass in external auditory canal with extradural extension to posterior cranial fossa. With a preoperative fine needle aspiration diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma, it was excised and the histopathology came out to be low-grade myxoid chondrosarcoma. She has not received any adjuvant chemoradiotherapy and there is no evidence of recurrence at months.

Hydatid cyst is a zoonotic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus. Majorly affected body regions are the liver and the lungs. However, rare localizations of the neck region, mastoids, parotid glands, orbita, and the mandible have been reported in literature. In this case, we report a large hydatid cyst of the maxillozygomatic region presenting as a slowly growing mass.

Malignant melanomas (MMs) of the parotid gland are relatively uncommon. They occur almost invariably as metastases from a primary tumour located in the region of the scalp or the mucous membranes of the nose, paranasal sinuses, or throat. Primary MMs arising in the parotid gland are extremely rare. It is assumed that they originate in the glandular tissue or in intraglandular lymph nodes. We present a case report and review of the literature on the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of intraparotid malignant melanoma. Diagnosis is based primarily on B-scan ultrasonography and fine-needle aspi

BACKGROUND: Castleman's disease is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder that is often misdiagnosed because of its untypical clinical or imaging features except for a painless mass. Besides, it is also difficult to cure Castleman's disease due to its unclear pathogenesis.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a Castleman's disease case with diagnostic significance regarding a 54-year-old Chinese male who has a painless mass in his left parotid gland for 18 months with a 30-years history of autoimmune disease psoriasis. Computed tomography scan showed a high-density nodule with clear boundaries in the l

Cysteine string proteins (CSPs) are secretory vesicle chaperone proteins that contain: (i) a heavily palmitoylated cysteine string (comprised of 14 cysteine residues, responsible for the localization of CSP to secretory vesicle membranes), (ii) an N-terminal J-domain (DnaJ domain of Hsc70, 70kDa heat-shock cognate protein family of co-chaperones), and (iii) a linker domain (important in mediating CSP effects on secretion). In this study, we investigated the localization of CSP1 in rat parotid acinar cells and evaluated the role of CSP1 in parotid secretion. RT-PCR and western blotting revealed

BACKGROUND: Ewing's sarcoma is a rare malignant entity. Extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma (EES) of the head and neck region is a rare occurrence, and Ewing's sarcoma of the parotid gland is even rarer. To the best of our knowledge, we reported the first case of extraskeletal ES originating from the parotid gland in the Tunisian literature.
CASE REPORT: We report a rare case of EES of the parotid gland in a 35-year-old female. She presented with left parotid tumefaction. Physical examination revealed solid and fixed mass associated with facial paralysis. Magnetic resonance imaging illustrated a lef

PURPOSE: To assess in a rat model whether adding a subtolerance dose in a region adjacent to a high-dose irradiated subvolume of the parotid gland influences its response (bath-and-shower effect).
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Irradiation of the whole, cranial 50%, and/or the caudal 50% of the parotid glands of Wistar rats was performed using 150-MeV protons. To determine suitable (i.e., subtolerance) dose levels for a bath-dose, both whole parotid glands were irradiated with 5 to 25 Gy. Subsequently groups of Wistar rats received 30 Gy to the caudal 50% (shower) and 0 to 10 Gy to the cranial 50% (b

Periarticular chondromas are common in the humerus and femur but rarely occur in the temporomandibular joint. We report a case of a chondroma in the anterior part of the ear. One year prior to his visit, a 53-year-old man became aware of swelling in the right cheek region which gradually increased in size. In the anterior part of the right ear, there was a palpable 25 mm tumor, elastic and hard, with poor mobility and without tenderness. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography CT showed a mass lesion with diffuse calcification or ossification in the upper pole of the parotid gland and areas of

Parotid gland lesions in children can be divided into benign or malignant. The age of the patient helps narrow the differential diagnosis, with vascular and congenital lesions being more frequent in the 1st year of life, while solid tumors are more frequent in older children. Inflammatory disease usually has rapid onset in comparison with that of neoplastic or congenital processes, which have more gradual clinical evolution. Currently, multiple imaging techniques are available to study the parotid region, such as US, CT, and MRI. However, it is still a challenge to distinguish nonmalignant les…

Sebaceous carcinoma of parotid gland are extremely rare with only 29 cases reported so far. The development of parotid sebaceous carcinoma in association with mutation in the mismatch repair gene that causes Muir Torre Syndrome (MTS), a subset of Lynch Syndrome, is still unclear. This study describes such a case and reviews the literature to see if an association between parotid sebaceous carcinoma and multiple visceral malignancies seen in Lynch Syndrome has ever been described. MTS represents a small subset of the Hereditary Non Polyposis Colorectal Carcinoma family, thought to be a subtype

Preoperative diagnosis of neoplasms in the parotid gland is essential for successful surgical treatment. The purpose of this study is to apply Raman spectroscopy in order to distinguish the spectral differences between pleomorphic adenoma and Warthin tumor from that of normal parotid gland tissues. Furthermore we establish the diagnostic model of the Raman spectra of neoplasms in parotid gland by employing support vector machine (SVM) with Gaussian radial basis function. Firstly, Raman spectra from different histopathological tissues were obtained by near-infrared Raman microscope, SVM was the

BACKGROUND: Parotid area lymph node metastasis from primary scalp and facial cutaneous cancers is a poorly recognized clinical entity partly because of the long time lapse between the index lesion and regional spread.
METHODS: A retrospective review of the University of Wisconsin Tumor Registry and Head and Neck Oncology Tumor Board was performed over a 10-year period from 1989 to 1999. One hundred two patients with a malignant parotid mass were identified. Of these, 20 patients were identified with parotid region squamous cell carcinoma and prior index skin cancer of the face or scalp. These…
