Endocapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis in a patient with parvovirus B19 infection.

A 45-year-old woman developed acute nephritic syndrome after erythema infectiosum. Laboratory data on admission showed decreased serum C3, C4, and CH50 levels and the presence of both immunoglobulin (Ig) M and IgG antibodies to human parvovirus B19 (HPV). A renal biopsy showed diffuse endocapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis. Immunofluorescence microscopy indicated 2+ granular staining for IgG, IgM, and C3 over the mesangial area and along glomerular capillary walls. HPV antigen was also detected in glomeruli by immunohistochemistry. Electron microscopy showed electron-dense deposits in …

[Parvovirus B19 as a cause of acute liver symptoms in adults].

Parvovirus B19 (B19), also known as "erythema infectiosum", is a disease that occurs in smaller outbreaks during late winter and early summer; and in Denmark an epidemic occurs every three years. The symptoms vary from fever, fatigue and the characteristic maculopapoulous erythema to asymptomatic cases in 50% of the infected patients. Two-thirds of the Danish population have been infected. The virus has a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from erythema nodosum in children, arthralgia/arthritis (especially in adults), aplastic crisis in patients with haemolytic anaemia, chronic …

Juvenile dermatomyositis in a child infected with human parvovirus B19.

We report a case of juvenile dermatomyositis in which clinical onset occurred soon after infection with human parvovirus B19. To the best of our knowledge an association between juvenile dermatomyositis and human parvovirus B19 has not been previously reported. Parvovirus infection has been associated with several autoimmune diseases, and the findings in the case we describe raise the possibility that parvovirus may induce juvenile dermatomyositis, although we could not demonstrate a causal relationship.

An epidemic of aplastic crisis caused by human parvovirus B19.

Human parvovirus B19 has been associated with several diseases. Aplastic crisis in patients with chronic hemolytic anemia, erythema infectiosum, hydrops fetalis and arthritis are among the common diseases caused by this virus infection. In the period between July, 1991, and March, 1992, 48 patients with aplastic crises were hospitalized at Saudi Aramco-Dhahran Health Center, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Forty-six patients had homozygous sickle cell disease, one had hemoglobin H disease and one had hereditary elliptocytosis. Evidence of recent human parvovirus infection was present in 91% of the case…

Excretion of porcine parvovirus through the genital tract of boars.

The putative binding of porcine parvovirus (PPV) to semen components in vitro was examined along with the shedding pattern of PPV in oronasally infected boars. Porcine parvovirus DNA was determined to be bound to spermatozoa that had been incubated in vitro with PPV and washed to remove loosely adherent virus. To determine whether PPV was shed in the semen, four 8-month-old boars, seronegative for PPV, were inoculated oronasally with a virulent strain of PPV. Prior to virus inoculation, a catheter was surgically implanted in the vas deferens for the purpose of collecting cauda epididymal semen…

Aplastic crisis and other effects of the human parvovirus infection.

Human parvovirus infections are common, provoke aplastic crises in patients with congenital haemolytic anaemia and cause fifth disease. An unknown proportion of the infections are subclinical. Parvoviraemia occurs in the early acute stage of infection and specific IgM can be detected during recovery. Most patients commencing an aplastic crisis are viraemic, but fifth disease arises after the viraemia. Serological tests for HPV, available at a small but increasing number of laboratories, will soon be complemented by tests for HPV DNA sequences present in blood, marrow and at other sites. Human …

Water-soluble N-2-Hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan enhanced the immunogenicity of inactivated porcine parvovirus vaccine vaccination on sows against porcine parvovirus infection.

Porcine parvovirus (PPV) is one of the most common and important virus causes of infectious infertility in swine throughout the world. Inactivated PPV vaccine is broadly used, however, there is no appropriate immunomodulatory adjuvant for enhancing present vaccines and developing new ones. Therefore, in this study, the water-soluble N-2-Hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (N-2-HACC) was synthesized, the adjuvant potential of chitosan derivative was evaluated in inactivated PPV vaccine. Twenty adult healthy sows were assigned to four groups and vaccinated with synthesized PPV/N-2…

Parvovirus B19-induced aplastic crisis in a kidney transplant recipient.

INTRODUCTION: Parvovirus B19 infection is a rare, but important cause of severe anemia in kidney transplant recipients. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 32-year-old male with end-stage kidney disease undergoing living-donor kidney transplantation and subsequently developing profound anemia. Our case emphasizes the heightened risks of developing infectious complications among kidney transplant recipients due to their intense immunosuppressed state and the diagnostic challenges parvovirus B19 presents in this population. In this context, maintaining a high index of clinical suspicion…

Clinical Spectrum of Children With Parvovirus B19-Associated Acute Myocarditis.

BACKGROUND: Parvovirus B19 is a DNA virus transmitted via respiratory droplets, commonly causing erythema infectiosum in children but also implicated in acute myocarditis. In 2024, an outbreak of parvovirus B19 infections was reported across Europe and the United States. Despite growing awareness, data on the clinical features and outcomes of children with parvovirus B19-associated acute myocarditis remain limited. METHODS: This multicenter retrospective observational study reviewed medical records of pediatric patients (<18 years of age) admitted with acute myocarditis to 11 Italian tertiary…

Parvovirus B19 encephalitis in adults: a case report from Vietnam.

Parvovirus B19 is a non-enveloped DNA virus of the Parvoviridae family, which usually causes erythema infectiosum in children. Although rare in adults, this virus can cause severe complications, including encephalitis. We report a case of a 50-year-old male patient, previously healthy, who was admitted to the hospital with high fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and rapidly progressing to impaired consciousness. The patient was intubated and placed on mechanical ventilation. A lumbar puncture was performed, which showed mild leukocytosis with normal protein and glucose levels, and negative cul…

Porcine Parvovirus in China: Recent Advances, Epidemiology, and Vaccine Strategies.

Porcine parvovirus (PPV), a non-envelope single-stranded DNA virus, causes severe reproductive disorders in swine worldwide, characterized by fetal mortality, mummification, and reduced boar fertility. As a highly prevalent pathogen in Chinese swine herds, PPV imposes substantial economic burdens on intensive pig production systems. This review systematically synthesizes recent advances in PPV virology, focusing on genomic evolution of emerging strains (PPV1-PPV8), epidemiological dynamics of emerging strains, molecular pathogenesis, and novel diagnostic tools. Furthermore, we critically evalu…

Neurologic Manifestations Associated with Parvovirus B19 Epidemic, Madrid, Spain, 2024.

A reemergence of parvovirus B19 infections in Spain in early 2024 prompted a 10-year review of the virus at a tertiary center. We identified 8 case-patients with neurologic manifestations who had parvovirus B19 in cerebrospinal fluid. Early recognition and management of parvovirus B19-associated neurologic conditions will help yield favorable outcomes.

First report of Equine Parvovirus-Hepatitis (EqPV-H) in Argentina.

The novel Equine Parvovirus-Hepatitis (EqPV-H) was first identified in the serum and liver of a horse that died of equine serum hepatitis, also known as Theiler's disease. Several reports in recent years strongly suggest that EqPV-H is the etiologic agent of Theiler's disease. Brazil is the only South American country where infection with this virus has been reported. This study investigated the presence of EqPV-H DNA in horse serum pools (n=51), commercial horse serum batches (n=5) and individual serum samples from donor horses (n=175) from Argentina. All serum samples were analyzed by quanti…

Ensuring Transfusion Safety: Screening Blood Donors for Human Parvovirus B19.

Ensuring the safety of blood and blood products is a vital aspect of healthcare. The potential for transmission of pathogens through blood and blood products makes transfusion safety a significant concern. Despite advancements in testing methodologies, donated blood products still pose a risk for infection transmission. Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a small, single-stranded, non-enveloped DNA virus transmissible parenterally by blood transfusion. B19V causes a wide range of clinical manifestations, which is generally harmless in healthy individuals. B19V infection may cause severe complicatio…

Increased parvovirus B19 seropositivity in healthy blood donors in India.

A core component of every blood program is the supply of safe blood and blood products. The elevated risk of transmission through these products is due to parvovirus B19 (B19V) resistance to the virus inactivation procedures. Our study aimed to screen asymptomatic blood donors for B19V at a tertiary care hospital in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, between September 2020 and June 2021. Sera from 106 healthy blood donors who tested negative for Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), Hepatitis C virus (HCV), syphilis, and malaria were tested for anti-B19V IgM and IgG using …
