Deletion 15q21.1----q22.1 resulting from a paternal insertion into chromosome 5.

A 15 month old boy with an interstitial deletion 15q derived from a paternal insertion (5;15)(q31.3;q21.1q22.1) is described and compared with one other reported case. A beak like nose with hypoplastic nasal alae, a thin upper lip, failure to thrive in infancy with later onset of obesity, and severe mental retardation are features common to both.

Complete hydatidiform moles combine maternal mitochondria with a paternal nuclear genome.

The parental origin of mitochondria in hydatidiform moles has been investigated by analysis of genetic variants of mtDNA restriction enzyme patterns. In six complete moles the mtDNA was found to be maternal in origin, with no contribution from the sperm mitochondria, while the nuclear genome was shown to be exclusively paternal in five cases. The occurrence of mtDNA variation in the healthy population was investigated using white blood cells and placentae, and the most common variation occurred at the Ava II restriction sites. The variants exhibited by molar mtDNA were the same as those found

Paternal age and Down's syndrome: data from prenatal diagnoses (DFG).

From prenatal diagnosis data obtained on mothers aged 35 years and above in the Federal Republic of Germany (DFG data), older fathers are demonstrated to have an increased risk of having trisomy 21 offspring. For paternal ages of 41 years upward, the age effect is quite strong. The risk for a fetus to have any de novo chromosomal aberration increases more with advancing paternal age for older mothers than for younger ones. Thus the ages of both parents have to be taken into account as an indication for prenatal diagnosis. Risk figures for trisomy 21 and for any de novo chromosomal aberration a

[Depressive reactions in children following the loss of a paternal figure, by death or divorce].

A review of different viewpoints on the theme "Death and the child" is made. When the child loses a loved object, he has to accept it in the outside world and manage the changes in his inner world. If the lost object is very needed, his ability to comprehend death is obstructed. When and how it is possible to help the child to understand death, is also examined. Depending of the age, development stage, previous relationships with the dead person, each child reacts differently. Effects of divorce on children are studied. A method that provides better avenues for ellaboration to children is pres

Seizure disorders in offspring of parents with a history of seizures - a maternal-paternal difference?

If the patterns of seizure disorders in parents and offspring could be assessed accurately, some insight might be gained into the relative role of genetic and environmental factors in the development of convulsive disorders. In this study 908 children born in a Rochester, Minnesota hospital from 1922 through 1972 whose mother or father had a verified and classified diagnosis of seizure have been followed from birth for evidence of any convulsive episode or seizure disorder. The observed numbers of various types of convulsions in the offspring are compared to the expected the number based on lo

Older paternal age and fresh gene mutation: data on additional disorders.

Older paternal age has previously been documented as a factor in sporadic fresh mutational cases of several autosomal dominant disorders. In this collaborative study, an older mean paternal age has been documented in sporadic cases of at least five additional dominantly inheritable disorders; the basal cell nevus syndrome, the Waardenburg syndrome, the Crouzon syndrome, the oculo-dental-digital sysdrome, and the Treacher-Collins syndrome. It was also found to be a factor in acrodysostosis and progeria, suggesting a fresh mutant gene etiology for these two conditions in which virtually all case

Dynamic interplay of maternal and paternal contributions to offspring phenotype in Eurasian perch.

BACKGROUND: Parental contributions to offspring phenotype extend beyond genetic inheritance, encompassing non-genetic factors that influence early development. However, the interplay between maternal and paternal effects remains poorly understood. This study investigates these contributions in Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) - a valuable model to study parental effect in finfishes - by analyzing early life traits and transcriptomic profiles of larvae resulting from crosses between wild and domesticated parents. RESULTS: Maternal effects dominated key developmental traits, including hatchin

Risk of neurodevelopmental disorders associated with paternal use of valproate during spermatogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Regulatory authorities have raised concerns about potential teratogenic and neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) risks associated with paternal valproate use during spermatogenesis, leading to restrictions. We aimed to investigate the association between paternal valproate exposure during spermatogenesis and the risk of NDDs in offspring in Sweden and Norway. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study of two nationwide cohorts from Sweden and Norway, including all singleton live births (≥22 gestational weeks) from 2007 to 2020. Paternal monotherapy exposure to valproate,

Health consequences of paternal incarceration using a future-treated control group.

BACKGROUND: Paternal incarceration is a now a common experience in the life course for young people in the United States that likely shapes health. This study examines the effect of paternal incarceration on adolescents’ health care access/utilization and health behaviors during adolescence. This study employs an innovative approach, which we refer to as the future treated control method, to adjust for unobserved heterogeneity by exploiting plausibly exogenous variation in the timing of paternal incarceration to develop a future treated control group. In this approach youth who have experience

Impact of paternity leave on the health of fathers and their families: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: As of 2024, paid paternity leave was available in 102 countries worldwide. However, the accessibility and methods of taking paternity leave are influenced by cultural background and individual values, leading to variations in uptake rate. Both positive and negative effects of paternity leave have been reported on the health of fathers, partners and children. A comprehensive understanding of this topic is essential for medical professionals supporting fathers undertaking childcare. The aim of this review is to identify and provide an overview of research related to the impact of p

Paternal exposure to hydrocarbon solvents in the workplace and cancer risk in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, certain hydrocarbons are known or suspected carcinogens. OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to estimate cancer risks in children and adolescents associated with paternal exposure to groups of aliphatic/alicyclic, aromatic, and chlorinated hydrocarbons, and the individual chemicals, toluene, methylene chloride, trichloroethylene, and 1,1,1-trichloroethane, from 3 months preconception to birth. METHODS: For this population-based case-control study of Danish children and adolescents (born 1968-2013) < 20 years of age when diagnos

Recurrent Pregnancy Loss: A Couple-Based Framework for Integrating Paternal Assessment.

Background/Objectives: Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) has traditionally been investigated predominantly through maternal factors, while the clinical role of paternal assessment remains inconsistently defined. Current guidelines differ substantially regarding semen analysis, sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF), genetic testing, and referral for andrological evaluation. This review aimed to compare contemporary guideline recommendations, critically appraise the directness, prognostic value, and clinical utility of the supporting evidence, and classify paternal assessment strategies as routine, selecti

From sperm to pregnancy: insights into paternal regulation of fertility divergence in cattle.

Embryo development and pregnancy establishment require successful interaction between the oocyte and sperm and proper activation of developmental signaling pathways. In the bovine, the successful execution of this biological equation requires, on one hand, maternal determinants such as the intrinsic quality of the oocyte and molecules secreted by the endometrium epithelium critical to sustain embryo development. In contrast, paternal contributions encompass both visible sperm characteristics assessed by routine semen evaluation and hidden traits that escape conventional laboratory assessment o

Paternal folate deficiency induces hepatic insulin resistance in offspring mice.

BACKGROUND: Folate (vitamin B9) is a water-soluble vitamin necessary for one-carbon metabolism, supporting the synthesis, repair, and methylation of DNA. While maternal folate status is well-studied for its role in fetal development and metabolic programming, the impact of inadequate folate intake in males on offspring development and metabolic diseases remains poorly understood. This study investigates the effects of folate deficiency in male parents on developing hepatic insulin resistance in offspring, focusing on molecular and metabolic disruptions within the liver. METHODS: Three-week-ol

Effects of paternal 5G RFR exposure on health of male offspring mice.

With the widespread application of 5G communication technology, the potential health risks of radiofrequency radiation (RFR) have been paid much attention. Prior studies have demonstrated that the testes are highly sensitive to RFR, and notably, paternal epigenetic modifications can be transmitted to offspring, impacting their reproductive and neurobehavioral phenotypes. To investigate the intergenerational effects of paternal exposure to 5 G RFR on male offspring health, 7-8-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into Sham group and 4.9 GHz RFR group (16 mice per group). The mice in

A paternal lactate dehydrogenase critically enhances male gametogenesis and malaria transmission.

Malaria blood stage parasite development relies on glycolysis to generate ATP, which requires pyruvate to lactate conversion by an essential lactate dehydrogenase enzyme (LDH1). Conversely, parasites developing in the mosquito employ mitochondrial chemiosmosis for ATP production. The source of ATP during transition from vertebrate to insect is less clear; gametes form in the mosquito midgut lumen within minutes of gametocyte ingestion, and while female gametes possess a mitochondrion, this organelle is absent from male gametes (microgametes). Here, we investigate a second LDH enzyme (LDH2) fou

Assisted reproduction with advancing paternal and maternal age: an Ethics Committee opinion.

Ethical considerations for developing policies regarding providing assisted reproductive care to individuals of advanced reproductive age are complex; considerations include both reproductive autonomy and the well-being of the potential offspring. This document replaces the previously published document titled "Oocyte or embryo donation to women of advanced reproductive age: an Ethics Committee opinion" (Fertil Steril 2016;106:e3-7).
