BACKGROUND: Approximately 60 cases of schwannoma unrelated to the cranial nerve have been reported, and only 12 arose from the tentorium. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate serum paraoxanase-1 (PON) activity, total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), and the oxidative stress index (OSI) in tinnitus; and to compare the results with data from healthy subjects.

Findings in patients in whom brain stem lesions were suspected were studied by a high-field-strength (1.5 T) MR imager. MR scans were obtained in 97 patients over a 10-month period. The mean age was 71 years (range, 39-94 years). A high incidence of infarction and lesions showing a high signal on T2-weighted image, but an almost normal signal on the T1-weighted image were observed at the pons in elderly cases. Paraoxonases (PONs) i.e. PON1, PON2, PON3 are basically lactonases. Of these, PON1 in addition has an efficient esterase activity and can hydrolyze organophosphates. Cheiro-oral syndrome is frequently associated with other neurologic deficits; its pure form is rare. We report a 60-year-old man with pure cheiro-oral syndrome due to a small hematoma located in the ventral tegmentum of the right upper pons. His sensory disturbance remained unchanged during a follow-up period of 16 months. Review of the literature suggests that the pons is the most frequent site of lesions in pure cheiro-oral syndrome.

Two cases of pure sensory stroke due to pontine haemorrhage are reported. Haematomas were located in the dorsolateral tegmentum of the pons, detected by computed tomographic scan. One showed the cheiro-oral syndrome on the left side. The other showed sensory dysaesthesia on the right side of the body, followed by dysaesthesia of cheiro-oral distribution. These cases indicate that the pons can also be one of the lesion sites of pure sensory stroke.

This study examined the relationship between nonverbal social perception and symptomatology in schizophrenia. Schizophrenic patients (n=28) and normal controls (n=28) were given the profile of nonverbal sensitivity test (PONS). Patients' symptoms were rated with the brief psychiatric rating scale (BPRS). METHODS: A retrospective review at a level one trauma center of patients undergoing lower extremity fracture surgery.
