BACKGROUND: Indications for sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy in the population with thin melanoma have frequently changed over time. The objective of our study was to evaluate T1 melanoma pathologic features predictive of SLN positivity with a primary focus on identifying a specific mitotic value that is most predictive of lymph node disease. Further detailed predictive features would help physicians select patients with thin melanoma for SLN biopsy.
METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database was queried for all patients diagnosed with trunk or extremity cutaneous melan

Axillary lymph node status, a major prognostic factor in early-stage breast cancer, provides information important for individualized surgical treatment. Because imaging techniques have limited sensitivity to detect metastasis in axillary lymph nodes, the axilla must be explored surgically. The histology of all resected nodes at the time of axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) has traditionally been regarded as the most accurate method for assessing metastatic spread of disease to the locoregional lymph nodes. However, ALND may result in lymphedema, nerve injury, shoulder dysfunction, and oth

AIM: To study the indications for sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in clinically-detected ductal carcinoma in situ (CD-DCIS).
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 20 patients with an initial diagnosis of pure DCIS by an image-guided core needle biopsy (CNB) between June 2006 and June 2012 was conducted at King Faisal Specialist Hospital. The accuracy of performing SLNB in CD-DCIS, the rate of sentinel and non-sentinel nodal metastasis, and the histologic underestimation rate of invasive cancer at initial diagnosis were analyzed. The inclusion criteria were a preoperative diagnosis of pure DC

The advantages of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in breast cancer patients include an enhanced pathological examination of a small number of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs), which permits more frequent detection of micrometastasis and isolated tumor cells (ITCs). At the same time, however, SLNB raises two new concerns: whether minimal SLN involvement has a significant impact on survival and whether patients with such minimal involvement should undergo further axillary dissections. Two large randomized studies, ACOSOG Z0011 and IBCSG 23-01, have demonstrated that axillary lymph node dissection (

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate factors associated with non identification of the sentinel lymph node (SLN) in lymphoscintigraphy of breast cancer patients and analyze the relationship with SLN metastases.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A single-center, cross-sectional and retrospective study was performed. Forty patients with lymphoscintigraphy without sentinel lymph node identification (negative lymphoscintigraphy - NL) were enrolled. The control group included 184 patients with SLN identification (positive lymphoscintigraphy - PL). Evaluated factors were age, body mass index (BMI), tumor size, histology, lo

INTRODUCTION: Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (SLNB) is the standard of care for staging axillary lymph nodes in women with breast cancer and clinically negative nodes. It is associated with reduced arm morbidity, moderated or severe lymphoedema, and a better quality of life in comparison with standard axillary treatment. Unfortunately, skip metastases makes all minimally invasive approaches, such as axillary sampling, unreliable. The aim of the present clinical prospective study is to evaluate the position of SLN in an important number of cases and establish the real incidence of skip metastases i

We report a case of breast cancer in a man who underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB). The patient, a 66-year-old man, observed a tumor under his left areola. The elastic hard tumor had a clear border. Ultrasonography revealed a hypoechoic tumor, approximately 18 mm in diameter, in the left subareolar and outer upper region. On fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), the tumor was diagnosed as a ductal carcinoma. The patient underwent a mastectomy (Bt) and an axillaryly mph node dissection(Ax)after the SLNB. The SLNB was performed with the blue dye alone. Based on histopathological observ

We report the case of a 44 year old lady with bilateral cosmetic silicone breast implants who had previously undergone a change of her right implant following extracapsular rupture. She presented 4 years later with a new lump in her right breast and underwent subcutaneous mastectomy for a grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma. Sentinel lymph node biopsy demonstrated axillary silicone lymphadenopathy but nil evidence of metastatic disease. We present this as the first described case of successful sentinel lymph node biopsy in the context of prior augmentation mammaplasty and ipsilateral implant rup

OBJECTIVE: The results of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) can be useful for staging and deciding on adjuvant treatment for patients with head and neck melanoma. False-negative SLNB can result in treatment delay. This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics and outcome of patients with false-negative SLNB in cutaneous melanoma of the head and neck.
STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort study using a prospective institutional tumor registry.
SETTING: Academic health center.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Data from 153 patients who underwent SLNB for melanoma of the head and neck were analyzed. False

The timing of sentinel node biopsy in the setting of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer is controversial. Sentinel node biopsy performed after neo-adjuvant chemotherapy may save patients with a nodal response the morbidity of an axillary lymph node dissection. A retrospective review of prospectively collected data compared sentinel node biopsies performed after patients had received neo-adjuvant chemotherapy with patients who had not received neo-adjuvant chemotherapy. Demographic factors, tumor characteristics, and the results of the sentinel node biopsies and completion lymph node d

OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to analyze the application of the Selective Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (SLNB) in early Breast Cancer of our population, through the analysis of axillary recurrences in patients with false negative sentinel node procedures without complete axillary lymphadenectomy, after a subsequent clinical follow-up.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 218 early Breast Cancer patients who underwent SLNB after being diagnosed of early breast cancer (T1-2N0) with complete axillary dissection only when the SLNB was positive in the histopathological analysis. In every case, a 2-

Malignant cutaneous melanoma is the cancer which has the most increased these last ten years. His prognose is linked with melanoma thickness, tumoral ulceration and lymph node metastasis. The research of these node metastasis is important for the prognosis and the treatment. The sentinel lymph node biopsy is used since 1991 and is now considered as a reliable choice for the patient staging. However, his therapeutic interest remains discussed. We discussed the used of the sentinel lymph node biopsy for malignant cutaneous melanoma with the last publications.

According to the available data, sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is proving to be an accurate staging technique with less post-surgical morbidity than standard axillary lymph node dissection (ALND). Survival benefits associated with SLN biopsy and, as well as the significance of IHC detected micrometastases have yet to be determined. The long term results of several multicenter trials are pending, yet preliminary results are in favor of abandoning ALND in favor of the less invasive alternative. Despite this, ALND remains the standard of care in breast cancer patients with clinically palpable

Mastectomy with axillary dissection is still the most commonly recommended procedure for male breast cancer. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate our experience in 32 male patients with early breast cancer who underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) and axillary dissection only in cases of metastases in the sentinel lymph node (SLN). The median age was 58 years (range, 33-80). Lymphoscintigraphy was successful in all patients, with a mean number of visualized SLNs per patient of 1.3 (range, 1-2). At surgery, the identification rate of the SLN was 100%, with a mean number o

INTRODUCTION: Side-effects occurring after sentinel lymph node excision in malignant melanoma patients have been poorly evaluated to date. The aim of the present study was to assess the side-effects of sentinel lymph node excision in this population.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All consecutive malignant melanoma patients undergoing sentinel lymph node excision between March 2000 and December 2002 were included in this retrospective study. Patients with a metastatic sentinel node subsequently undergoing lymph node dissection were excluded. Median follow-up of patients was 12.6 +/- 8.8 months. Compli
