In humans, psittacosis is primarily a flulike illness following exposure to psittacine birds. In rare cases, pregnant women exposed to Chlamydia psittaci can contract gestational psittacosis: atypical pneumonia, sepsis, and placental insufficiency resulting in premature birth or miscarriage. Mycoplasmas were isolated from yak calves in Mongolia, the 1st experience worldwide with this species. They were also isolated from pathologically affected sheep and goat lambs. The disease was experimentally reproduced in yak calves as well as in sheep and goat lambs. Clinical manifestations were identical with those recordable from animals with spontaneous outbreak of the disease. Five hundred and sixty sheep, slaughtered at an Addis Ababa abattoir, were examined for cysticercosis and hydatidosis. The prevalence of the metacestodes of Taenia hydatigena was 37.1% and that of Echinococcus granulosus 16.4%. Oesophageal wall distension was performed on standing conscious sheep by inflating a rubber balloon at four different levels inside the cervical and thoracic oesophagus. Although no retrograde oesophageal peristalsis was ever recorded, these stimulations were always followed by a conspicuous increase of parotid saliva secretion. A survey of veterinary diagnostic laboratories revealed that intranasal tumors occur in sheep in most provinces of Canada. Tumors were diagnosed in 44 sheep of several breeds including Polled Dorset, Suffolk, Cheviot, Rambouillet and various crossbreeds. Twenty-seven percent of tumors occurred in sheep that were less than two years old. Most tumors were sporadic but 33% of cases occurred in six related flocks, indicating that this disease can be an enzootic problem. The toxicity of daily oral administration of Datura stramonium to Desert sheep and Nubian goats was studied. The main clinical signs were disturbances in locomotion, fasciculation, hyperesthesia, rapid respiration, and reduced water intake. There were increases in the concentrations of aspartate amino-transferase and ammonia and decreases of total protein and magnesium in the serum of Datura-poisoned animals. In this study Desert sheep appeared to be more susceptible to the effects of Datura stramonium than were Nubian goats.
