BACKGROUND: Ear reconstruction is challenging surgery, often with poor outcomes. Our purpose was to develop a surgical training model for auricular reconstruction.
METHODS: Silicone costal cartilage models were incorporated in a workshop-based instructional program. Trainees were randomly divided. Workshop group (WG) participated in an interactive session, carving frameworks under supervision. Nonworkshop group (NWG) did not participate. Standard Nagata templates were used. Blood donor selection contributes to the safety of both the donor and the recipient. The objective of this study was to identify the number and causes of blood pre-donation deferrals at the Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM). A retrospective study was carried out to retrieve data regarding deferred blood donors at the HUSM in the year 2006. A total of 4,138 blood donors donated blood at the Transfusion Medicine Unit, of whom 231 were deferred or rejected as donors. The percentage of deferred donors was 5.6%. Between January 1994 and December 2003, a total of 118 patients (MIF = 1/13) with thyrotoxicosis was studied at the endocrine and metabolic diseases unit of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Brazzaville, in Congo. 72 patients (61%) had Graves' hyperthyroidism, 23 (19.6%) had toxic multinodular goitre while the rest had toxic adenoma (7.6%), and thyroiditis (4.2%). INTRODUCTION: Retinoscopy is a classical method to determine the refraction of the eye by observing the dynamics of reflexes and varying the experimental parameters until a specific reflex (neutralisation point) is observed. Until now photographs and geometrical drawings of the different ray tracings have been commonly used to visualise the pathways. OBJECTIVE: Addison's disease may present with diverse and non-specific clinical and biochemical features. Contentious issues include the appropriate criteria for the interpretation of the ACTH stimulation test and the necessary extent of investigation to identify a specific aetiology for the hypoadrenalism. The experience of Addison's disease at a South African teaching hospital was reviewed to (1) record the aetiology and spectrum of presentation, (2) examine the performance of the ACTH stimulation test and (3) determine the utility of adrenal CT scan and biopsy.
