[Ultrasonography of the kidney (author's transl)].

Ultrasound is a nowadays widely accepted diagnostic tool in urology and nephrology. It can improve, supplement or even replace standard radiographic procedures. Indications and limitations are presented. Main indications for renal ultrasound are renal and pararenal masses and nonvisualisation of the kidney. As in any other imaging procedure, the diagnostic accuracy depends on the following: location and size of the lesion and its density compared to that of the neighborhood, and the quality of the imaging unit and of the investigator.

Efficacy of Endoscopic Ultrasonography in Evaluation of Undetermined Etiology of Common Bile Duct Dilatation on Abdominal Ultrasonography.

BACKGROUND The cause of common bile duct (CBD) dilatation cannot be determined by imaging modalities in many patients. The aim of this study was to assess the value of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) in detecting the cause of CBD dilatation in patients in whom ultrasonography could not demonstrate the cause of dilation. METHODS Prospectively, 152 consecutive patients who were referred for evaluation of dilated CBD (diameter ≥7 mm) of undetermined origin by ultrasonography were included in this study. All the patients underwent EUS. Final diagnoses were determined by using endoscopic retrograd…

A Pilot Study of Ultrasonography-Naïve Operators' Ability to Use Tele-Ultrasonography to Assess the Heart and Lung.

INTRODUCTION: Remotely tele-mentored ultrasound (RTMUS) involves the real-time guidance of US-naïve providers as they perform point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) by remotely located, US-proficient providers via telemedicine. The concordance between RTMUS and POCUS in the evaluation of critically ill patients has not been reported. This study sought to evaluate the concordance between RTMUS and POCUS for the cardiopulmonary evaluation of patients in acute respiratory insufficiency and/or shock. METHODS: Ultrasound-naÏve nurses performed RTMUS on critically ill patients. Concordance between RTMUS

Endoscopic ultrasonography in chronic pancreatitis: a comparative prospective study with conventional ultrasonography, computed tomography, and ERCP.

The usefulness and accuracy rate of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) in the diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis (CP) were prospectively evaluated in 81 patients with suspected pancreatic disease. All underwent EUS, abdominal ultrasonography (AUS), and computed tomography (CT), and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was performed in 55 of the cases. The diagnosis of CP was established in 44 patients (CP group) including 24 with a calcified form. No pancreatic disease was observed in 18 patients (control group), and 19 patients had a pancreatic tumor. In the CP group AUS was les…

Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasonography: Review and Applications.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) has revolutionized ultrasound imaging adding enhanced diagnostic imaging and therapeutic applications to its repertoire. CEUS involves the use of microbubbles which are lauded for their benefit of enhanced imaging without the limitations of radiation exposure or risk of nephrotoxicity seen with other contrast agents. In addition, many innovative uses of microbubbles in diagnosis and treatment stages have been discovered. This article summarizes the composition and resonance properties of microbubbles as the contrast agents for ultrasound, as well as their ad

Guide sheath breakage during endobronchial ultrasonography.

This report describes a case of guide sheath breakage during endobronchial ultrasonography. While steering the guide sheath in the direction of a peripheral lung nodule using a guiding device/curette, the radiopaque band (RB) attached to the head of the guide sheath dislodged and remained in the peripheral bronchus near the tumour. The band could not be removed endoscopically. As the tumour was diagnosed as a colon cancer metastasis, we performed a partial lung resection to remove the RB and nodule together four months after bronchoscopy.

Soft elastic hydrogel couplants for ultrasonography.

Couplants play significant roles in ultrasonography. To ensure imaging quality, it is critical to maintain conformal contact of the couplant with both the skin surface and the ultrasound probe in clinical applications. In addition, either the probe or the couplant should not deform the skin surface significantly, which will result in an overestimated modulus of the tissue for elastography imaging. However, existing liquid gel couplants cannot bear external compressive force, while existing solid gel couplants cannot maintain a conformal contact with skin surface. Especially, the nonconformal c…

Diagnosing Appendicitis in Pregnancy Via Ultrasonography.

The authors present a case of acute appendicitis during a first trimester pregnancy. Appendicitis in pregnancy is especially dangerous because perforation of the appendix increases the likelihood of maternal and fetal morbidity significantly. For this reason, it is important to diagnose and treat suspected appendicitis in pregnancy as soon as possible. The patient was diagnosed with appendicitis via a transabdominal ultrasound. She was provided antibiotics and underwent a laparoscopic appendectomy and recovered without complications.
