While arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are a common congenital or post-traumatic abnormality, male genital AVMs are rare and have been described in the scrotum or penis in pediatric patients.1,2 We describe a 34-year-old male presenting with recurrent spontaneous penile urethral bleeding found to have an AVM of the penile urethra. Distal urethral carcinomas are very rare and are similar in their pathology and behaviour to tumours of the glans penis and foreskin. Similarly they are associated with penile intraepithelial neoplasia (PeIN) of both differentiated and undifferentiated types. A 27-year-old woman presented to our clinic with total incontinence. The reason of the incontinence was an injury of the urethra, caused by a genital piercing of the sexual partner. Reconstruction of the urethra and the bladder neck was performed 10 weeks after injury. Upon removal of the catheter 6 weeks after surgery, the patient was fully continent.

The study demonstrates that the minipig urethra is an appropriate animal model for in vitro experiments and therefore promising for long-term animal tests of artificial urinary sphincter systems in vivo. A 37-year-old mentally retarded male patient complained of voiding difficulties. Physical examination revealed a foreign body in the urethra. The foreign body was found to be nail clippers and was removed with open surgery. This case of self-inserted nail clippers in the urethra by the patient is the first published report to our knowledge.

A 78-year-old woman was presented with bleeding in the region of the genitalia. The tumor arose from the urinary meatus and biopsy was performed. The pathological examination revealed sarcomatoid carcinoma which was composed of squamous cell carcinoma and spindle cell sarcoma. She underwent urethrectomy and suprapubic cystostomy. She is alive at 26-month follow-up, after local radiation therapy of 50 Gy to the recurrence sites.

Measurements were made (using fast confocal microscopy) of intracellular Ca2+ levels in fluo-4 loaded interstitial cells isolated from the rabbit urethra. These cells exhibited regular Ca2+ oscillations which were associated with spontaneous transient inward currents recorded under voltage clamp. Interference with D-myo-inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) induced Ca2+ release using 100 microm 2-aminoethoxydiphenyl borate, and the phospholipase C (PLC) inhibitors 2-nitro-4-carboxyphenyl N,N-diphenylcarbamate and U73122 decreased the amplitude of spontaneous oscillations but did not abolish them.

The pharmacological effect of amezinium on the urethra and bladder of rabbits was investigated. Amezinium produced concentration-dependent contractions in isolated urethral strips.
