BACKGROUND: Right ventricular (RV) function is a key determinant of outcomes in lung transplantation, particularly in patients with pre-existing pulmonary hypertension. The RV is uniquely sensitive to perioperative hemodynamic stressors, including ischemia-reperfusion injury, abrupt afterload changes, and allograft implantation.
PURPOSE: This review aims to summarize the perioperative echocardiographic assessment of RV function in lung transplantation, emphasizing the role of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) in evaluating RV performance and guiding intraoperative management.
METHODS: A

A particular focus on right ventricular function should be suggested in patients during treatment with carfilzomib due to potential RV side-effects. TAPSE follow-up appears to be an interesting tool for close monitoring of these patients. https://bit.ly/4dTedb9.

BACKGROUND: Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy type 5 (ARVC5) is the most aggressive type of ARVC, caused by a fully penetrant missense mutation (p.S358L) in TMEM43 (transmembrane protein 43). Pathologically, the disease is characterized by dilation of the cardiac chambers and fibrofatty replacement of the myocardium, which results in heart failure and sudden cardiac death. Current therapeutic options are limited, and no specific therapies targeting the primary cause of the disease have been proposed.
METHODS: We investigated whether overexpression of wild-type (WT) TMEM43 could

Valvular heart disease (VHD) remains a significant global health concern, with mortality rates ranging from 1% to 15%. In Indonesia, the most prevalent form of VHD is rheumatic heart disease, which is associated with a hospital mortality rate of 6.5% following valve surgery. Previous studies have shown that, post-surgery, morbidity rates remain high: 30.8% of patients experience prolonged intensive care unit stays (>96 hours), 30.67% require extended mechanical ventilation (>24 hours), and 52% need prolonged use of inotropic agents (≥14 days). Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction is closely asso

Right ventricular (RV) systolic function is an essential but neglected component in cardiac evaluation, and its importance to the contribution to overall cardiac function is undermined. It is not only sensitive to the effect of left heart valve disease but is also more sensitive to changes in pressure overload than the left ventricle. Pulmonary Hypertension is the common and well-recognized complication of RV systolic dysfunction. It is also the leading cause of pulmonary valve disease and right ventricular dysfunction. Patients with a high pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) and a low RV ejection

BACKGROUND: The effect of left bundle branch pacing (LBBP) on right ventricular (RV) function is not well known, and there is conflicting evidence regarding whether cardiac resynchronization therapy improves RV function.
OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to investigate the effect of LBBP on RV function and to evaluate the response of RV dysfunction (RVD) to LBBP.
METHODS: Sixty-five LBBP candidates were prospectively included in the study and underwent echocardiography at baseline and 6-month follow-up. LBBP response was left ventricular (LV) reverse remodeling, defined as a reduction in LV end-sy

BACKGROUND: Mitral regurgitation (MR) burdens the left and right ventricles with a volume or pressure overload that leads to a series of compensatory adaptations that eventually lead to ventricular dysfunction, and it is well known that in rheumatic heart disease (RHD) that the inflammatory process not only occurs in the valve but also involves the myocardial and pericardial layers. However, whether the inflammatory process in rheumatic MR is associated with ventricular function besides hemodynamic changes is not yet established.
PURPOSE: Evaluate whether rheumatic etiology is associated with

AIMS: We aimed to determine the effect of increasing body weight upon right ventricular (RV) volumes, energetics, systolic function, and stress responses using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR).
METHODS AND RESULTS: We first determined the effects of World Health Organization class III obesity [body mass index (BMI) > 40 kg/m2, n = 54] vs. healthy weight (BMI < 25 kg/m2, n = 49) upon RV volumes, energetics and systolic function using CMR. In less severe obesity (BMI 35 ± 5 kg/m2, n = 18) and healthy weight controls (BMI 21 ± 1 kg/m2, n = 9), we next performed CMR before and during dobut

In patients with repaired Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF), detailed assessment of right ventricular (RV) function is important for management and timing of possible pulmonary valve re-intervention. The aim of this study was to evaluate RV function using two-dimensional multi-plane echocardiography (2D MPE), a novel four-wall imaging method obtained from one apical acoustic window utilising electronic plane rotation. In sixty-two ToF patients (aged - 28 [22, 39] years, 65% male), systolic function of four different RV walls (lateral, anterior, inferior and inferior coronal) were evaluated using MPE.

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular (RV) diastolic function has been associated with outcomes for patients with pulmonary hypertension; however, the relationship between biomechanics and hemodynamics in the right ventricle has not been studied.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Rat models of RV pressure overload were obtained via pulmonary artery banding (PAB; control, n=7; PAB, n=5). At 3 weeks after banding, RV hemodynamics were measured using a conductance catheter. Biaxial mechanical properties of the RV free wall myocardium were obtained to extrapolate longitudinal and circumferential elastic modulus in lo

Objectives Pulmonary hypertension with heart failure is related to venous insufficiency. However, there is no clear data whether pulmonary arterial hypertension with preserved right ventricular function cause venous insufficiency. In this study, we aim to investigate the relation between pulmonary arterial pressure with venous insufficiency in pulmonary arterial hypertension patients with preserved right ventricular function. Methods Between January 2012 and October 2014, 38 patients with a diagnosis of pulmonary arterial hypertension and 47 control group patients were included. Venous disabil

AIMS: Little is known about right ventricular (RV) function in survivors of childhood cancer, although both anthracyclines and radiotherapy represent potentially cardiotoxic treatment. We hypothesized that adult survivors of childhood malignant lymphoma or acute lymphoblastic leukaemia would have impaired RV function.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined RV dimensions and function by echocardiography in 246 survivors, mean 21.7 years after diagnosis, and in 211 matched controls. Of the survivors, 84% had been exposed to anthracyclines, mediastinal radiotherapy, or both. Compared with controls, al

Accurate assessment of right ventricular geometry and function is of high clinical importance. However, several limitations have to be taken into consideration if using conventional echocardiographic parameters. Advanced echocardiographic techniques, such as speckle-tracking analysis or 3D echocardiography are reliable and simple tools providing a cost-effective and non-invasive alternative of current modalities used to characterize the right ventricle. There is a growing interest in the diagnostic and prognostic value of these methods regarding pathological (right ventricular infarction, pulm

Postoperative impairment of right ventricular (RV) systolic function can appear after surgical repair of complex congenital heart defects, such as tetralogy of Fallot; it is caused by chronic volume and/or pressure overload due to pulmonary regurgitation and/or stenosis. RV dysfunction is strongly associated with prognosis in these patients. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging is the gold standard for quantification of RV volumes and ejection fraction in patients with congenital heart diseases; however, it is costly and is not widely available. Echocardiography is the imaging modality that is m

BACKGROUND: Many echocardiographic parameters have been proposed to evaluate right ventricular (RV) systolic function. We comprehensively assessed a wide range of quantitative echocardiographic parameters in a single cohort compared with same-day cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR).
METHODS AND RESULTS: 92 subjects were examined prospectively: Group 1 consisted of 46 healthy controls (21 males, 33.4 ± 11.4 years), Group 2 consisted of 46 patients (20 males, 38.5 ± 18.9 years) undergoing RV functional assessment by CMR (1.5 T). Echocardiography was performed on the same day as CMR; fractio

BACKGROUND: Amiodarone is commonly used in the acute care setting. However the acute hemodynamic and echocardiographic effect of intravenous amiodarone administered intraoperatively on right ventricular (RV) systolic and diastolic function using transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) has not been described.
METHODS: The study design was a randomized controlled trial in elective cardiac surgical patients undergoing valvular surgery. Patients received an intravenous loading dose of 300 mg of either amiodarone or placebo in the operating room, followed by an infusion of 15 mg/kg for two days. He

RATIONALE: Right ventricular (RV) failure is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in pulmonary hypertension, but its mechanism remains unknown. Myocyte enhancer factor 2 (Mef2) has been implicated in RV development, regulating metabolic, contractile, and angiogenic genes. Moreover, Mef2 regulates microRNAs that have emerged as important determinants of cardiac development and disease, but for which the role in RV is still unclear.
OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized a critical role of a Mef2-microRNAs axis in RV failure.
METHODS AND RESULTS: In a rat pulmonary hypertension model (monocrotaline),

TAPSE measurement during echocardiography is a well known measure of right heart systo-diastolic function. Low TAPSE means reduced cranio-caudal excursion of tricuspidal annulus, sign of both reduced ejection fraction and reduced distensibility of right ventricle. It is a good prognostic index for cardiac mortality risk in CHF patients, adding significant prognostic information to NYHA stadiation. Nephrologists do not always fully aware of right ventricular function in their patients affected by chronic renal failure (CRF), even if this datum is probably crucial in vascular access policy. Our

The aim of this study was to assess whether serial quantitative assessment of right ventricular (RV) function by speckle-based strain imaging is affected by pulmonary hypertension-specific therapies and whether there is a correlation between serial changes in RV strain and clinical status. RV longitudinal systolic function was assessed using speckle-tracking echocardiography in 50 patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) before and after the initiation of therapy. The mean interval to follow-up was 6 ± 2 months. Subsequent survival was assessed over 4 years. Patients demonstrated a
