A Scoping Review of Audiovisual Integration Methodology: Screening for Auditory and Visual Impairment in Younger and Older Adults.

With the rise of the aging population, many scientists studying multisensory integration have turned toward understanding how this process may change with age. This scoping review was conducted to understand and describe the scope and rigor with which researchers studying audiovisual sensory integration screen for hearing and vision impairment. A structured search in three licensed databases (Scopus, PubMed, and PsychInfo) using the key concepts of multisensory integration, audiovisual modality, and aging revealed 2,462 articles, which were screened for inclusion by two reviewers. Articles wer

Missed opportunities: Do states require screening of children for health conditions that interfere with learning?

METHODS: Investigators reviewed websites of state departments of health and education, and legislation for all 50 states and DC. For states with mandated screenings and a required form, investigators applied structured analysis to assess HBL inclusion. RESULTS: No state mandated that schools require screening for all 7 HBLs. Less than half (49%) required comprehensive school health examinations and only 12 states plus DC required a specific form. Of these, 12 of the forms required documentation of vision screening, 11 of hearing screening, and 12 of dental screening. Ten forms asked about ast…

[Early detection of color blindness from the viewpoint of occupational medicine with various references to internistic and human genetic symptom complexes].

Vision screening tests within the limits of industrial medicine examinations, together with physical examinations, were done on human individuals by means of pseudo-isochromatic charts in order to detect "red-green blindness". The tests were carried out on 1589 individuals (males and females) from 10 medium-scale plants of the Saarbrücken area (Federal Republic of Germany). The results obtained from male individuals by 919 Ishihara-tests were only considered, categorized and graphically represented according to their age groups. The data have been collected from the cases examined mostly betwe…

Age-related vision changes: a primary care guide.

Visual impairment becomes more prevalent with age. A person has "low vision" when legally blind or partially sighted. In addition, many older patients have functional visual impairment that affects their ability to read, even with corrective lenses. Normal visual changes that occur with aging include presbyopia, decreased contrast sensitivity, decreased dark/light adaptation, and delayed glare recovery. The four most prevalent age-related ocular diseases are macular degeneration, open-angle glaucoma, cataract, and diabetic retinopathy. The primary care practitioner can identify patients with v

[The Freiburg Stereotest. On assessment of stereovision in automobile driver examination].

BACKGROUND: The "Freiburg Stereotest" is a new instrument where disparate pictures are generated by a computer and displayed on one single high resolution video monitor. In the present work, the Freiburg Stereotest was used to check the stereo qualification for certain categories of driver's licence. For this purpose, a determination of the smallest detectable disparity is not reasonable. Rather, it should be checked whether or not a certain disparity, usually well above threshold, is recognized with a sufficient reliability. We have chosen a disparity of 100 arcsec; this value is considered t

Eye Disease in Medical Practice: What You Should Know and Why You Should Know It.

Incidence of cataract, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and glaucoma will significantly increase by 2050. Visual impairment can increase morbidity and mortality in nonocular disease. There are different patterns of vision loss in cataract, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. Internists and medical subspecialists play an important role in prevention, detection, and early treatment of eye disease. Awareness of screening guidelines for eye disease as well as a basic ocular history and simple penlight examination can decrease incidence of vision loss an

Performance of a photoscreener in detecting accommodation spasm.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: For a correct spectacle prescription, accommodation spasm should not be overlooked in the measurements made using an autorefractometer. Although this can be easily understood with cycloplegia, it is not practical. Therefore, investigating practical methods that can predict excess accommodation will be useful in clinical practice. BACKGROUND: To evaluate the performance of a photoscreener in detecting pseudo-myopia due to accommodation spasm and whether it eliminates the need for cycloplegia. METHODS: Study was conducted in Van Training and Research Hospital. The manifest

[Brazilian guidelines proposal for screening and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)].

Retinopathy of prematurity is one of the main causes of childhood blindness. Worldwide, there are more than 50,000 children blind due to retinopathy of prematurity. Visual impairment is a consequence of retinal detachment. It can be detected by serial ophthalmologic examination of infants at risk, and those identified with the severe form of the disease can be treated by laser or cryotherapy, which can decrease significantly the blindness due to ROP. The Brazilian Society of Pediatrics, Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology and Brazilian Society of Pediatric Ophthalmology suggest a guideline for

Performance of the Spot Vision Screener in children with Down syndrome and other special needs.

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is a common cause of monocular vision impairment and disproportionally affects developmentally delayed children. Photoscreeners have been suggested as a method to detect amblyopia risk factors (ARFs) in children with developmental disabilities who may not be amenable to traditional vision screening methods. The Spot Vision Screener is a commonly used photoscreener for detecting ARF and has shown excellent sensitivity and accuracy in the general pediatric population. The purpose of this study was to evaluate its accuracy in children with Down syndrome and other special nee…
