Passive immunization against inhibin increases testicular blood flow in male goats.

The present study investigated whether or not passive immunization against inhibin modulates testicular blood flow in goats. Male Shiba goats were injected with either 10 ml of inhibin antiserum (INH group; n = 5) or 10 ml of normal castrated goat serum (NGS group; n = 4). Concentrations of FSH, LH, testosterone (T), and estradiol (E2) in the plasma were measured by radioimmunoassay. Blood flow within the supratesticular (STA) and marginal testicular arteries (MTA) were measured by color pulsed-Doppler ultrasonography, and Doppler indices (resistive index; RI and pulsatility index; PI) were re

Current aspects in surgical treatment of advanced heart failure with future durable mechanical circulatory support.

Background Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide, resulting in an increasing demand for long-term treatment options for patients with end-stage heart failure. While heart transplantation is the gold standard, donor organ shortage continues to be a major limitation, particularly in countries with opt-in consent systems. Summary Durable mechanical circulatory support (dMCS) devices have emerged as a critical therapy for patients with advanced heart failure, either as a bridge to transplantation or as destination therapy. Technological innovations over recent decades

A case presenting with retro-orbital pain during endoscopic burr-hole surgery for organized chronic subdural hematoma.

BACKGROUND: Retro-orbital pain occurring during burr-hole irrigation surgery for chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is extremely rare. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 65-year-old man had undergone burr-hole irrigation surgery for organized CSDH 2 months previously. The patient was referred to our hospital for thick residual hematoma and persistent motor weakness after surgery. Endoscopic removal of the hematoma and the inner membrane was performed under local anesthesia. After half of the inner membrane had been resected, the patient complained of pulsatile pain behind his left eyeball. As the removal of t

After the Lateral Tunnel Fontan, the Intra-Atrial Channel Grows and Remains Phasic, Expanding in Systole.

Although the extracardiac conduit (ECC) Fontan is now widely preferred, recent reports of improved early outcomes with the lateral tunnel (LT) have renewed interest in LT physiology. We evaluated long-term growth and phasic diameter changes of the intra-atrial channel after LT Fontan. We reviewed 67 patients who underwent LT Fontan at our center (1989-2009). Patients with transplantation, Fontan takedown, or no follow-up within the past 5 years were excluded. Forty-seven patients with follow-up within 5 years were included; 37 had transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE) of sufficient quality for a

Severe Anemia as a Rare Complication of Traumatic Scalp Arteriovenous Fistula: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Acquired arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) of the scalp are uncommon, usually asymptomatic, and often of cosmetic concern. In rare cases, they can lead to severe anemia due to recurrent and chronic blood loss from fragile, malformed vessels in high-flow arterial and venous connections. This report describes the case of a 38-year-old woman with a traumatic AVF of the scalp presenting with severe chronic anemia. CASE REPORT A 38-year-old woman with a history of domestic violence was admitted to the Emergency Department (ED) with severe anemia (hemoglobin 3.7 g/dL; reference range 12-16 g/

A novel endovascular approach using transcalvarial emissary vein access for scalp and skull base AVMs: Case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Scalp arteriovenous malformations (SAVMs) are rare high-flow vascular lesions with complex angioarchitecture, often involving both superficial and deep components. When the malformation extends toward the skull base or includes deep venous drainage, traditional transarterial or percutaneous access may be insufficient. While direct puncture techniques have gained traction, transosseous access via emissary veins has not previously been described. CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old girl presented with a pulsatile, fluctuant swelling over the left forehead and localized

Successful Coil Embolisation With Isolation Technique of Ulnar Artery Aneurysm in Hypothenar Hammer Syndrome: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Hypothenar hammer syndrome is a rare vascular condition characterised by ulnar artery damage, which can manifest as thrombosis or aneurysm formation. While surgical treatment has been the mainstay of therapy, endovascular treatment may offer a minimally invasive alternative. Reports of successful coil embolisation of ulnar artery aneurysms in hypothenar hammer syndrome are extremely limited in the literature. REPORT: A woman in her sixties with a history of smoking and atrial fibrillation on anticoagulants presented with a one month history of a painful pulsatile mass in her dom

Pressure-Wire Guided Hybrid Branch Pulmonary Artery Band Placement for Palliation of Single Ventricle and Critical Congenital Cardiac Lesions.

BACKGROUND: Historically, bilateral pulmonary artery band (PAB) placement was guided by pulmonary blood flow surrogates including systemic blood pressure (BP) and arterial saturation. These metrics alone may result in suboptimal bPAB placement. We perform a hybrid PAB (hPAB) procedure employing pressure-wire assessment to evaluate pulmonary hemodynamics and guide the procedure. METHODS: Single-center retrospective study of consecutive patients that underwent hybrid bPAB procedure between August 2015 and May 2022. Procedures involved main pulmonary artery (PA) angiography and selective PA pres

Paracorporeal continuous-flow ventricular assist devices (cfVADs) for children less than 20 kg: Challenging the paradigm in the smallest patients.

OBJECTIVES: Small children with heart failure are at high risk for waitlist mortality, experience high complication rates on ventricular assist devices (VADs), and remain the only population not routinely supported with continuous-flow ventricular assist devices (cfVADs). We sought to describe the clinical course and outcomes of an exclusively cfVAD strategy in the management of small children with heart failure. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of all patients less than 20 kg supported on paracorporeal VADs at a single institution (2017-2024), stratified by univentricular versus bive

A Novel Size-Based Centrifugal Microfluidic Design to Enrich and Magnetically Isolate Circulating Tumor Cells from Blood Cells through Biocompatible Magnetite-Arginine Nanoparticles.

This paper presents a novel centrifugal microfluidic approach (so-called lab-on-a-CD) for magnetic circulating tumor cell (CTC) separation from the other healthy cells according to their physical and acquired chemical properties. This study enhances the efficiency of CTC isolation, crucial for cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy. CTCs are cells that break away from primary tumors and travel through the bloodstream; however, isolating CTCs from blood cells is difficult due to their low numbers and diverse characteristics. The proposed microfluidic device consists of two sections: a passive

A Case of Spontaneous Carotid-cavernous Fistula in a Patient with Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

Vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS) is a rare disorder that is characterized by vascular lesions mainly caused by vascular fragility, such as spontaneous carotid-cavernous fistula (sCCF). We experienced a patient who presented with sCCF but suffered postoperative multiple vascular arteriopathy complications caused by undiagnosed vEDS. A 39-year-old woman who had no physical and medical characteristics indicating vEDS was referred to our hospital due to sudden onset of headache and pulsatile tinnitus. Digital subtraction angiography revealed direct sCCF of the left internal carotid artery. I

Repairable ex vivo model of functional and degenerative mitral regurgitation.

OBJECTIVES: Transcatheter mitral valve repair is an emerging alternative to the surgical repair. This technology requires preclinical studies to assess efficacy in mitigating mitral regurgitation (MR). However, ex vivo MR models are not established. We developed 2 novel repairable models, functional and degenerative, which can quantitatively assess regurgitation and effect of intervention. METHODS: We used porcine mitral valves and a pulsatile flow circulation system. In the functional MR model, the annulus was immersed in 0.1% collagenase solution and dilated using 3D-printed dilators. To co…

Retinal Vessel Pulsatile Characteristics Associated With Vascular Stiffness Can Predict the Rate of Functional Progression in Glaucoma Suspects.

PURPOSE: Tissue stiffening and alterations in retinal blood flow have both been suggested as causative mechanisms of glaucomatous damage. We tested the hypothesis that retinal blood vessels also stiffen, using laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG) to characterize vascular resistance. METHODS: In the longitudinal Portland Progression Project, 231 eyes of 124 subjects received LSFG scans of the optic nerve head (ONH) and automated perimetry every 6 months for six visits. Eyes were classified as either "glaucoma suspect" or "glaucoma" eyes based on the presence of functional loss on the first visit. V

Right coronary artery originating from the left ventricular outflow tract diagnosed after a Ross procedure: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Anomalous coronary origin from the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) is an exceedingly rare condition thought to be associated with the bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). While the malignant presentation of this entity has been described, its pathophysiology and diagnostic evaluation are poorly understood. CASE SUMMARY: A 33-year-old woman status post Ross procedure in childhood for congenital aortic stenosis due to BAV with presumed common origin of right and left coronary arteries based on single coronary ostium seen on aortic valve inspection, presented with symptomatic pulmonary

Leaflet kinematics after the Yacoub and Florida-sleeve operations: results of an in vitro study.

OBJECTIVES: The Florida-sleeve is a valve-sparing technique that causes minimal interference to leaflet kinematics and aortic root dynamism. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of the Florida-sleeve and Yacoub techniques on aortic leaflet kinematics. METHODS: Two groups of 6 whole porcine hearts were treated with either the Florida-sleeve technique or the Yacoub technique and tested in a pulsatile loop. Valve fluid dynamics, coronary flow analysis and valve echocardiograms were performed both before and after the procedures. RESULTS: Both procedures showed no differenc
