Real-time Simultaneous DKG and 2D DKG Using High-speed Digital Camera.

INTRODUCTION: For the evaluation of voice disorders, direct observation of vocal cord vibration is important. Among the various methods, laryngeal videostroboscopy (LVS) is widely used, but it was not a true image because it collects images from different cycles. In contrast, high-speed videoendoscopy and videokymography have much higher frame rates and can assess functional and mobility disorders. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study is to describe real-time, simultaneous digital kymography (DKG), two-dimensional scanning (2D) DKG, and multi-frame (MF) LVS system using a high-speed digital ca

Supraglottic Airway Devices and Effect on Voice-Comparison of LMA Proseal and i-gel: Double-Blind Randomized Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is an important alternative to endotracheal intubation for all professional voice users undergoing surgery. However, dysphonia is a known complication of LMA Proseal (PLMA) use. The i-gel airway (IGA) provides adequate airway seal without the need for an inflatable cuff. Hence, it helps to minimize the risk of tissue compression. This study compares effect of PLMA and IGA on voice at 24th hour after anesthesia. DESIGN: This is a double-blind randomized clinical trial. METHODS: Ninety anesthesiologists class 1 adults scheduled for surgeries lasting up t

Voice and swallowing after partial laryngectomy: factors influencing outcome.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the factors influencing swallowing and phonatory results after partial laryngectomy. METHODS: We carried out a medical chart review of patients who underwent partial laryngectomies between June 2003 and November 2010, focusing on functional outcomes. RESULTS: Thirty-two patients were enrolled. No statistically significant difference was found in the comparison of phonatory outcomes of patients with preservation of both arytenoids; the results of the Yanagihara classification were significantly different (p = .015) in patients with an atypic

Acoustic voice analysis was used to measure the maximum phonation time (MPT), the jitter, and the shimmer. RESULT: The SO2 levels of the laryngeal muscle were significantly higher in the healthy subjects than in pretreatment MTD patients and were correlated with the VHI-10 and DSI scores. Sex Differences in Pitch Range and Speech Fundamental Frequency After Arytenoid Adduction and Thyroplasty.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to clarify the sex differences in pitch range (PR) and speech fundamental frequency (SFF) after arytenoid adduction (AA) combined with type 1 thyroplasty (TP1) in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) and to assess the cause of these differences. STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective review of clinical records. METHODS: The records of 50 patients with UVFP for whom PR, SFF, and maximum phonation time (MPT) had been evaluated before and 1 year after AA combined with TP1 were analyzed. Patients consisted of 36 men and 14 women. In particu…

Near total laryngectomy: a versatile approach for voice restoration in advanced T3 and T4 laryngeal cancer: functional results and survival.

PURPOSE: Creation of a tunneled mucosal shunt between the trachea and pharynx that is controlled by remaining intrinsic laryngeal musculature with its nerve supply is an acceptable voice restoration procedure for advanced T3 and T4 laryngeal cancer. Such a tunnel will allow unilateral direction of air from lung to pharynx during phonation and will prevent aspiration since deglutition is a vagal mediated response which will induce contraction of tubed laryngeal musculature preventing aspiration. We previously reported our preliminary experience with the technique and we adopted the voice restor…

Homologous collagen substances for vocal fold augmentation.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Dysphonia resulting from failure of glottic closure during voicing is a difficult clinical problem. Recently develope … they decrease the force of contraction needed to bring the vocal folds into a position adequate for phonation and have minimal affect on the vibratory patterns. These forms of homologous collagen are well tolerated. A small amount persists over a 6-month interval. These materials warrant further clinical trials in human subjects.

Deep Learning-Based Analysis of Glottal Attack and Offset Times in Adductor Laryngeal Dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: Diagnosis of adductor laryngeal dystonia (AdLD) is challenging as it mimics voice features of other voice disorders. This could lead to misdiagnosis (or delayed diagnosis) and ineffective treatments of AdLD. This paper develops automated measurements of glottal attack time (GAT) and glottal offset time (GOT) from high-speed videoendoscopy (HSV) in connected speech as objective measures that can potentially facilitate the diagnosis of this disorder in the future. METHODS: HSV data were recorded from vocally normal adults and patients with AdLD during the reading of the "Rainbow Pass

Effectiveness of Recurrence Quantification Measures in Discriminating Subjects With and Without Voice Disorders.

The objective of this study was to analyze the accuracy of recurrence quantification measurements (RQMs) in discriminating between individuals with and without voice disorders. This study consisted of a total of 541 recorded voice samples from normal and dysphonic subjects. All subjects recorded a sustained vowel /Ɛ/ and underwent a laryngoscopic examination of the larynx. Twelve RQMs and three parameters related to the topology of the phonatory system were extracted from the samples, for a total of 15 measures. The classification used quadratic discriminant analysis and includes the measures

Optimal Duration for Voice Rest After Vocal Fold Surgery: Randomized Controlled Clinical Study.

OBJECTIVES: Voice rest is commonly recommended after phonomicrosurgery to prevent worsening of vocal fold injuries. However, the most effective duration of voice rest is unknown. Comparison of Supraglottic Activity and Spectral Slope Between Theater Actors and Vocally Untrained Subjects.

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to assess supraglottic activity in theater actors and to observe whether they present differences compared with subjects with no voice training. Acoustic and perceptual analyses were also performed. METHODS: A total of 20 participants were divided into two groups: an experimental group of trained theater actors, and a comparative group of subjects with no voice training. Absence of laryngeal pathology was confirmed by rigid videostroboscopy. Flexible laryngoscopy was performed to assess supraglottic activity during speaking phonatory tasks. Voice recording was

OBJECTIVE: To cross-culturally adapt of Persian Vocal Tract Discomfort (VTDp) scale and evaluate its validity and reliability in the assessment of patients with muscle tension dysphonia (MTD). STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional and prospective cohort design was used to psychometrically test the VTDp. Longitudinal Voice Outcomes After Voice Therapy in Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the long-term effectiveness of voice therapy in vocal outcomes of patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) and vocal productions of patients with long-standing treatment-naïve UVFP treated with voice therapy. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational study. METHODS: A voice therapy protocol was applied individually in three stages. Fifteen sessions were scheduled twice a week in 70 patients with UVFP. Forty-seven patients were treated within a year of the diagnosis (group 1). The remaining patients had delayed therapy (at least 1 year after diagnosis) (gr
