OBJECTIVE: Falls cause significant morbidity and mortality in long term care facilities. Dual-stiffness flooring (DSF) has previously shown promise in reducing such morbidity in experimental models. This study set out to measure the impact of SmartCell flooring on falls-related morbidity in a nursing home.
METHODS: All falls occurring at an Arizona nursing home between July 1, 2008, and December 31, 2010, were reviewed for age, sex, diagnosis of osteoporosis, number of medications, history of previous falls, type of flooring (normal vs DSF), time of day, type of injury, and resulting actions.

To evaluate the pre-existing renal lesions (PERL) found incidentally during evaluation for blunt renal trauma, determine their importance, and suggest guidelines for effective management, including conservative treatment, we reviewed 180 patients who were hospitalized with blunt renal trauma between 1992 and 2008. Thirty of the 180 (16.6%) patients had PERL, which had been undiagnosed. The mean follow-up was 5 years (range 1-9 years). There were 24 men and 6 women with a mean age of 30 years (range 14-80 years). The most common cause of blunt renal injuries was falls and sports. Renal stones w

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and factors associated with traumatic injuries to permanent incisors of 12-year-old school children in Davangere, India.
METHODS: In total, 1020 12-year-old school children were selected. Two trained and calibrated clinicians examined the children in the school environment using the World Health Organization Classification of Tooth Fracture (1978). Examination was also done for lip coverage and maxillary overjet using the Community Periodontal Index probe. Children were then interviewed using a structured questionnaire for demographic data and history of th

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the incidence and prevalence of traumatic brain injury (TBI), particularly for infants, children and young adults.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to provide an accurate estimate of the incidence and prevalence of TBIs for individuals between 0-25 years of age.
METHOD AND PROCEDURES: A birth cohort of 1265 individuals was used, for which information regarding TBI events, both hospitalized and non-hospitalized, had been recorded.
MAIN OUTCOMES AND RESULTS: The average incidence for this age group ranged from 1.10-2.36 per 100 per year, with

BACKGROUND: Although visual impairment has been associated with falls, fractures, and other injuries, the relation between cataract surgery and injuries is unclear. This study assesses whether persons waiting for cataract surgery are at increased risk of requiring health care services for an injury compared with a control group, and, if so, whether the risk changes after cataract surgery.
METHODS: This is a retrospective case-control study of first-eye cataract surgery recipients in Manitoba in fiscal 1999-2000. Health care administrative data and cataract waiting list registry data were the

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures are among the most common fall-related fractures. The manner in which the upper extremities are used for protection during a fall may exert a considerable influence on the incidence of injury. Here, we sought to determine the degree to which the assumption of sagittal plane symmetry was valid in unexpected falls after a trip, and to quantify the effects of asymmetrical upper extremity motion on impact kinematics and kinetics.
METHODS: The motion of eight healthy older women who fell after being unexpectedly tripped was quantified. Impact kinematics and kine

The authors report about an unexpected death by traumatic lesion of the internal carotid artery in a 30-year-old man who had fallen two metres. The man suffered a fracture of the left maxillary sinus and a fracture of the right orbit with bilateral haemorrhage of the maxillary sinus. Surgical treatment was performed with favorable outcome. Clinically, there were no neurological symptoms but about 60 days after his accident, the man died from uncontrolled epistaxis. He was submitted to the autopsy that show a linear fracture in the left side of the turcic sella and lesion of the left internal c

PURPOSE: To report the successful endovascular repair of an acute axillary artery hemorrhage.
CASE REPORT: An 87-year-old woman with Charcot-Marie-Tooth ataxia presented with an enormous shoulder hematoma and clinical signs of exsanguination after a fall. Angiography demonstrated complete avulsion of the right subscapular artery from the axillary artery, and active bleeding into a hematoma of at least 1500 mL. Endovascular repair with a balloon-mounted covered stent-graft was performed percutaneously, which controlled the bleeding and averted surgery. The patient recovered uneventfully and wa

The sales of foot-propelled scooters in the United States has skyrocketed with a concomitant increase in emergency department visits related to injuries. It is estimated that more than 60% of injuries could be prevented or reduced in severity if protective gear had been worn. Pediatric nurses should support efforts to decrease scooter-related injuries in children by advocating for the usage of protective gear. Further research is indicated to assess knowledge of potential dangers in those with reported scooter-related injuries, the extent of injuries, and protective gear worn prior to injury o

A 67-year-old patient suffered a fall and sustained injuries to the thorax, combined with fractures of the ribs, sternum and thoracic spine. Her pre-existing kyphosis (caused by osteoporotic vertebral collapse) increased in severity. There was a clear relationship between a sternal fracture, deterioration of thoracic kyphosis and a fracture of the thoracic spine.

We report about 48 patients who sustained a deceleration trauma after jumping out of a window. The average free fall height was 11.6 m. 45.8% of the patients suffered from psychic disorders. 12.5% were addicted to opiates or hallucinogenics. The lethality of the analysed group was 12.5%. Within the group of spinal injuries (66.7%) compression- and bursting vertebra fractures of the thoracolumbar spine dominate. Injuries of the osseus pelvic ring (62.5%) and the thorax (64.6%) were equally often in all free falls. Abdominal- (25%) and head trauma (35.4%) occurred less at the patients in our cli

Fractures of the facial skeleton in children are uncommon. This study presents the results of 139 children who sustained a total of 161 such fractures and were admitted to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, between January 1983 and December 1992. The male to female ratio was 3:1 and the highest incidence was at age 10 years. Analysis of fracture patterns showed that despite differences in anatomy, the fracture patterns were similar to those occurring in adults, but the relative proportion of each fracture type was different in children. Nasal fractures occurred most frequently (5
