BACKGROUND: Several factors may influence the degree of carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption during laparoscopy. Hypercapnia as a result of excessive CO2 absorption may have adverse clinical effects.

Ocular absorption of timolol in rabbits was studied after topical ocular administration of 3H-timolol in an eyedrop or in silicone cylindrical devices that released timolol at 7.2 micrograms/h. The devices were applied in either the inferior or superior conjunctival sac. Timolol concentrations were nearly equal in the inferior and superior portions of ocular tissues when the drug was administered in an eyedrop. Calcium absorption from salts and foods intrinsically labeled with 45Ca was determined in the rat model. Calcium bioavailability was nearly 10 times greater for low oxalate kale, CaCO3 and CaCl2 than from CaC2O4 (calcium oxalate) and spinach (high in oxalates). Extrinsic and intrinsic labeling techniques gave a similar assessment of calcium bioavailability from kale but not from spinach.

B12 absorption was investigated in 47 healthy children aged 7 months to 15.8 years (median 4.9 years). The present theory of eustachian tube (ET) function and middle ear (ME) ventilation posits that oxygen absorbed by the ME mucosa causes negative ME pressure which is relieved by periodic opening of the ET during swallowing and yawning. The active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol (PB) (Norwich-Eaton), a common antidiarrheal, is bismuth subsalicylate. The absorption of salicylate after oral PB was studied in six fasted men. Plasma concentrations of total salicylate and the urinary excretion profile of salicylate were determined as a function of time and dose. An anaesthetic circle system without a carbon dioxide absorber is described. The efficiency of the circle, i.e., the fraction of alveolar gas in the outflow from the circle, was measured in 15 patients during halothane anaesthesia or neurolept analgesia. The fraction ranged from 0.88 to 0.95 (mean 0.91), while the ratio between the alveolar ventilation and the fresh gas inflow ranged from 0.97 to 1.71. The efficiency was not correlated to this ratio.
