OBJECTIVES: Few neurophysiological studies have investigated cerebellar function in patients with essential tremor, even though the cerebellum may contribute to tremor generation. Here, we studied cerebellar function in patients with essential tremor using 2 physiological methods.
METHODS: Participants were 20 patients with essential tremor and 30 age-matched healthy volunteers, and the results were compared across the groups. We studied motor cortical inhibition using cerebellar magnetic stimulation and prism adaptation.
RESULTS: Both cerebellar inhibition and prism adaptation were affected

The traditional linear no-threshold model of toxicity and stress fails to capture the complex, adaptive nature of biological systems. Hormesis-a biphasic dose-response phenomenon where low-dose stress induces beneficial, adaptive responses while high doses cause harm-offers a more comprehensive paradigm. This article asserts that hormesis is a major, unifying explanatory principle of life that efficiently integrates evolutionary theory, genetics, and epigenetics. From an evolutionary perspective, hormesis is an energy-efficient strategy of adaptive homeostasis, permitting organisms to build bi

Winter in temperate and high latitudes imposes severe challenges for animal survival, associated with low ambient temperature and limited food availability. In some mammalian species, these challenges are met by hibernation, a state characterized by marked reduction in core temperature and metabolic activity. Despite these extreme conditions, hibernating mammals preserve cardiac function and avoid life-threatening arrhythmias and vascular failure. This review summarizes the current evidence on cardiovascular adaptations supporting survival during torpor, focusing on cardiac electrophysiology,

Nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE) in crops is a critical challenge, as only 40 % of applied nitrogen is typically recovered at harvest. Ammonium-based nutrition is proposed as a strategy to increase NUE in agrosystems. However, crops display better performance when growing with a nitrate-based nutrition. To advance in the current understanding of the interspecific variability to ammonium nutrition, we investigated the performance of the three annual species of Brachypodium genus: B. distachyon, B. stacei, and B. hybridum, focusing on their differential responses to ammonium and nitrate nutriti

Preparation for oxidative stress (POS), i.e., the upregulation of endogenous antioxidants, is a widespread response of animals exposed to extreme conditions. This response has been described for more than 80 animal species belonging to eight phyla during hypometabolism or situations that limit oxygen availability. The pattern of the typical POS-response, in which a mild redox imbalance triggers antioxidant adjustments that results in increased tolerance to subsequent oxidative insults, roughly follows the curve of hormetic phenomena. A similar pattern has been reported for various animal speci

August Krogh was a comparative physiologist who used frogs, guinea pigs, cats, dogs, and horses in his research that led to his Nobel Prize on muscle physiology. His idea to choose the most relevant organism to study problems in physiology has become known as Krogh's principle. Indeed, many important discoveries in physiology have been made using naturally occurring animal models. However, the majority of research today utilizes laboratory mouse and rat models to study problems in physiology. This paper discusses how Krogh's principle can be invoked in musculoskeletal research as a complementa

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the morphometric respiratory potential of gills compared to the stomach in obtaining oxygen for aerobic metabolism in Pterygoplichthys anisitsi, a facultative air-breathing fish. The measurements were done using stereological methods. The gills showed greater total volume, volume-to-body mass ratio, potential surface area, and surface-to-volume ratio than the stomach. The water-blood diffusion barrier of the gills is thicker than the air-blood diffusion barrier of the stomach. Taken together, the surface area, the surface-to-volume ratio and the

This article reviews the neuromuscular maladaptation in spastic muscles, including motor unit remodeling, muscle fiber changes, and the accumulation of hyaluronan in the extracellular matrix, and fibrosis of connective tissues and fascia thickening. It highlights how these neural and muscular changes interact and contribute to muscle stiffness, weakness, and contractures, limiting function and mobility. The article also examines the effects of spasticity interventions, such as botulinum toxin, phenol neurolysis, hyaluronidase, dry needling, and fasciotomy, on neuromuscular adaptations. Underst

Lysosomes were once considered terminal degradative organelles responsible for disposing of cellular waste. However, recent studies have revealed that lysosomes serve as dynamic signalling and metabolic hubs at the center of diverse biological processes, including nutrient sensing, metabolic regulation, membrane trafficking, autophagy, inflammation, and cell death. To support this broad functional repertoire, lysosomes must possess robust mechanisms to maintain their integrity in the face of damage or stress. In response to lysosomal membrane damage, cells engage multilayered adaptive mechanis

BACKGROUND: Aythya nyroca (Ferruginous Duck), a small to medium-sized chestnut-colored diving duck, is mainly distributed in central, western, and southern Asia, southern Europe, and central Africa. We employed Oxford Nanopore sequencing and Hi-C technique to assemble the first chromosome-level genome of A. nyroca. The assembled genome had a scaffold N50 of 86,001,877 bp, with 35 pseudochromosomes mounted. Repeat sequences accounted for approximately 14.84 % of the genome.
RESULTS: To uncover the molecular mechanisms of diving adaptations in A. nyroca, we conducted separate enrichment analyse

BACKGROUND: Deep-diving cetaceans tolerate acute hypoxia better than their terrestrial ancestors and shallow-diving counterparts. However, our poor understanding of how genetic factors, cellular functions, and physiological characteristics combine to drive hypoxia adaptation in deep-diving cetaceans remains a critical gap.
RESULTS: Here, we studied the genetic basis for this ability by creating a de novo genome assembly for the pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps) and comparatively analyzing genomes from 12 cetacean species, including 2 other deep-diving cetaceans. We also sequenced and compar

High mountains harbor a considerable proportion of biodiversity, but we know little about how diverse plants adapt to the harsh environment. Here we finished a high-quality genome assembly for Dasiphora fruticosa, an ecologically important plant distributed in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and lowland of the Northern Hemisphere, and resequenced 592 natural individuals to address how this horticulture plant adapts to highland. Demographic analysis revealed D. fruticosa underwent a bottleneck after Naynayxungla Glaciation. Selective sweep analysis of two pairs of lowland and highland populations i

Intertidal macroalgae, such as coralline algae, represent an essential structural element and substrate in rocky coastal zones. They have a high degree of flexibility allowing their survival in environments with severe mechanical stress during tidal cycles. This study characterised the genicula and intergenicula of the calcifying red algae Corallina officinalis across its geographic distribution in the Northeast Atlantic. Poleward populations have constructed more sturdy cell walls compared to equatorward populations, potentially due to greater local adaptations to higher frequency and intensi

Traditional associative learning tasks focus on the formation of associations between salient events and arbitrary stimuli that predict those events. This is exemplified in cerebellar-dependent delay eyeblink conditioning, where arbitrary cues such as a tone or light act as conditioned stimuli (CSs) that predict aversive sensations at the cornea (unconditioned stimulus [US]). Here, we ask if a similar framework could be applied to another type of cerebellar-dependent sensorimotor learning - sensorimotor adaptation. Models of sensorimotor adaptation posit that the introduction of an environment

The rhythmic chewing movement pattern is dynamically reshaped to adapt to a variable chewing environment. The variance affects the wear performance of dental prostheses. This study was aimed to generate these variable rhythmic chewing movements for dental testing equipment. A six-axis parallel chewing robot DUT-2 was adopted as the dental testing equipment. Four variances were extracted from the rhythmic movement, including period, offset, amplitude, and mode. The relevant movement cases, including gradually accelerating movement, gradually increasing movement, gradually shrinking movement, an

We examined the role of the cerebellum in patients with tremor-dominant cervical dystonia by measuring the adaptive capacity of rapid reflexive eye movements (saccades). We chose the saccade adaptation paradigm because, unlike other motor learning paradigms, the real-time modification of saccades cannot "wait" for the sensory (visual) feedback. Instead, saccades rely primarily on the internal reafference modulated by the cerebellum. The saccade adaptation happens over fast and slow timescales. The fast timescale has poor retention of learned response, while the slow timescale has strong retent

In an era where some find fake news around every corner, the use of sensationalism has inevitably found its way into the scientific literature. This is especially the case for host manipulation by parasites, a phenomenon in which a parasite causes remarkable change in the appearance or behaviour of its host. This concept, which has deservedly garnered popular interest throughout the world in recent years, is nearly 50 years old. In the past two decades, the use of scientific metaphors, including anthropomorphisms and science fiction, to describe host manipulation has become more and more preva

To investigate the relationship between light sensing systems in the eye and circadian oscillators in the hypothalamus of subterranean rodents, we studied subterranean Mandarin voles (Lasiopodomys mandarinus) that spend their entire lives under dark conditions with degenerated eyes, and compared oscillatory expression patterns of clock genes in the hypothalamus and eye between Mandarin voles and their aboveground relatives, Brandt's voles (L. brandtii). Individuals of both vole species were kept under a 12-h light/12-h dark condition or continuous dark condition for 4 weeks. In both species, t
