Optic disk contractility in morning glory disk anomaly.

Morning glory disk anomaly is a nonhereditary, congenital optic disk dysplasia characterized by conical excavation of the posterior fundus with a central glial tuft and radial retinal vessels. We report the case of a 4-year-old girl who presented with esotropia, enophthalmos, no light perception, and afferent pupillary defect in her left eye; fundus examination revealed morning glory disk anomaly. Ultrasound B-scan showed axial length increasing in the left eye on consensual light exposure. Magnetic resonance imaging/angiogram of the brain and orbits were within normal limits except for globe

Axial Length-Driven Anisometropia in Cornea Plana Spectrum with Alternating Exotropia: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Cornea plana is a rare congenital corneal disorder characterised by marked corneal flattening, often with microcornea and shallow anterior chambers. It is classically associated with high hyperopia and accommodative esotropia. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 35-year-old woman with a cornea plana spectrum phenotype in whom cycloplegic refraction revealed marked anisometropia (hyperopic astigmatism in the right eye and myopic astigmatism in the left eye) together with an alternating exotropia. Swept-source optical biometry demonstrated interocular axial length asymmetry, plausibly

Intraocular lens calculation for cataract surgery in high myopia: a case report of an extreme axial eyeball length of 35.7 mm.

Extreme axial eyeball length is a known risk factor for decreased accuracy of intraocular lens calculations. We report a case of a 35 years-old male with anisometropic amblyopia and an axial length of 35.7 mm in his right eye. To the best of our knowledge, this is a case of one of the longest eyeballs ever scientifically reported. The patient presented with presenile cataracts in the right eye, hand movement visual acuity, and required cataract surgery. Due to his high anisometropia, he was unable to wear spectacle correction prior to surgery in the amblyopic eye. The left (non-amblyopic) eye

Intraocular epidermal growth factor concentration, axial length, and high axial myopia.

PURPOSE: Various molecules such as dopamine have been found to be associated with axial elongation in experimental studies. Here, we examined whether intraocular EGF is associated with axial length in myopic patients. METHODS: The hospital-based investigation included patients of European descent without optic nerve, retinal, or macular diseases except for myopic maculopathy. Using aqueous humor samples collected during surgery, the EGF concentration was examined applying a cytometric bead array. High myopia was defined by an axial length of ≥ 27.0 mm. RESULTS: The study included a non-highl

Iseikonic lens implantation in anisometropia.

The implantation of an iseikonic prepupillary intraocular lens in unilateral aphakia usually requires a slight (2 D) myopia of the implanted eye if the two eyes are isometropic. On the other hand, the implantation of an iseikonic implant in one eye of a anisometropic (asymmetric) eye pair can result in unexpectedly high changes in spectacle ametropia, due to differences in axial length or corneal power. The changes in ametropia after iseikonic lens implantation are discussed in relation to preoperative corneal and axial anisometropias. Alternative procedures to iseikonic implantation are descr

The Short-term Effect of Atropine 0.1% on the Axial Length and Choroid of Children Treated for Myopia Progression Prevention, Measured by Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography.

PURPOSE: To investigate the short-term effect of atropine to better understand its mechanism of action in myopia prevention. The current study investigates whether atropine's effect on the axial length arises from an increase in choroidal thickness using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS: Twenty-five myopic children (25 eyes) (9 boys and 16 girls; mean age: 11.8 years, range: 7 to 15 years) were enrolled following documented myopia progression and axial length increase in the preceding 6 months. Using swept-source OCTA, choroidal thickness and choroidal str

SubFoveal Choroidal Imaging in High Myopic Nepalese Cohort.

PURPOSE: Evidence suggests that choroid is thinner in myopes as compared to nonmyopes. However, choroidal thickness varies with the refractive error, age, axial length, and ethnicity. The purpose of this study was to determine the subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) in high myopic Nepalese subjects and to investigate its association with the mean spherical equivalent refractive error (MSE), axial length, and age. METHODS: Ninety-two eyes of 92 high myopic subjects (MSE ≤ -6 diopters) and 83 eyes of 83 emmetropic subjects (MSE: 0.00 Diopters) were included in the study. SFCT was assessed usin

Effects of posterior staphyloma on choroidal structure in myopic adults: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Studies on the choroid of myopic eyes with posterior staphyloma have shown that choroidal thickness decreased. This retrospective study further analysed the effects of posterior scleral staphyloma on choroidal blood vessels and matrix components compared to non-pathological myopia. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, ninety-one eyes were divided into pathological (posterior staphyloma) and non-pathological myopia. The latter was further divided into three groups (Group 1: 26 mm ≤ axial length; Group 2: 24 mm ≤ axial length < 26 mm; Group 3: 22 mm ≤ axial length < 24 mm). Choro

[Long-term biometric results in glaucoma in children].

In a retrospective study 30 eyes of 18 patients suffering from developmental glaucoma (primary congenital glaucoma, Sturge Weber syndrome, juvenile glaucoma) were examined after surgery. The mean follow-up period was 13 years. Eyeball length and anterior chamber depth were measured by means of echooculometry. Biometric data (echooculometry, corneal diameter, cup to disk ratio) were compared with psychophysic data (visual acuity, visual field). Up to an axial length of 26 mm, myopia caused by elongation of the eyeball is compensated by the weak refractive power of the large cornea. In cases wit

[Assessment of myopia progression].

The global increase in myopia prevalence and associated secondary complications necessitates adequate monitoring of myopia progression. This review highlights the advantages and disadvantages of the most commonly used target parameters for assessing myopia progression: refractive error and axial length. Although refractive error is essential for the diagnosis and optical correction of myopia, axial length proves to be a more reliable and clinically relevant parameter for monitoring progression and guiding preventive interventions. Axial length correlates more strongly with the risk of ocular c

Two models of experimental myopia in the mouse.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to test the response of the mouse eye to two methods for the induction of experimental myopia. METHODS: Growth patterns of eyes were determined by axial length measurements from birth to adult in eyes of both sexes of normal mice examined on post-natal day 1 to 6 months and at 1 year. For the induction of experimental myopia, Balb/cJ mice were prepared with either unilateral lid suture or by a -10D spectacle lens placed over one eye at post-natal day 10. Other mice received a plano lens as a control for lens wear. Refraction was carried out at post-natal
