Remarkable advances have been made in the area of pharmacotherapy such as immunosuppressants and biologics in recent years. However, there is always the possibility that adequate pharmacotherapy cannot be carried out due to resistance, organ damage, allergies, and adverse drug reactions. The utilization and effectiveness of a hospital preoperative autologous blood donation program were analyzed. Over 16 months, 180 donors, or 11.6 percent of eligible patients (those undergoing elective surgical procedures where blood was routinely crossmatched), were enrolled in the program. BACKGROUND: Severe blood donor adverse events are rare, but due to their rarity studying them can be difficult. To get an accurate estimate of their frequency and rate in the donor population it may be necessary to combine donation data across countries.
