Nearly 2.3 million individuals worldwide are coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). Odds of HCV infection are six times higher in people living with HIV (PLWH) compared to their HIV-negative counterparts, with the highest prevalence among people who inject drugs (PWID) and men who have sex with men (MSM). HIV coinfection has a detrimental impact on the natural history of HCV, including higher rates of HCV persistence following acute infection, higher viral loads, and accelerated progression of liver fibrosis and development of end-stage liver disease co…

Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is a human hepatitis-causing RNA virus, unrelated to any other taxonomic group of RNA viruses. Its occurrence as … correspond to a hypothetical rodent large delta antigen. Correspondingly, there is no evidence for coinfection with an HBV-related hepadnavirus based on virus detection and serology in any deltavirus-positive animal. No other coinfecting viruses were detected by RNA sequencing studies of 120 wild-caught animals that could serve as a potential helper virus. T …

A pathogen can infect multiple hosts. For example, zoonotic diseases like rabies often colonize both humans and animals. Meanwhile, a single host can sometimes be infected with many pathogens, such as malaria and meningitis. Therefore, we studied two susceptible classes S 1 ( t ) and S 2 ( t ) , each of which can be infected when interacting with two different infectious groups I 1 ( t ) and I 2 ( t ) . The stochastic models were formulated through the continuous time Markov chain (CTMC) along with their deterministic analogues. The statistics for the developed model were studied using the mul

The brucellosis and Q-fever coinfection is very rarely reported. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of concomitant brucellosis and Q-fever, most likely imported in Croatia. A 30-year-old male agricultural worker was hospitalized on 22 April 2017 after a ten days fever up to 40°C with chills, shivering, excessive sweating, general weakness, loss of appetite and headache. A month and a half prior to the hospitalization he lost 18 kg of body weight. Three weeks before hospitalization the patient returned from Kupres (Bosnia and Herzegovina) where he was working for the past year on a…

BACKGROUND: No published randomized controlled data on the use of direct-acting antivirals (DAA) in acute hepatitis C (AHC) coinfection exist. However, with the AHC epidemic ongoing among men who have sex with men (MSM) these are urgently needed.
METHODS: The CHAT study is a randomized controlled trial of pegylated interferon + ribavirin (PR) plus telaprevir (TVR) for 12-24 weeks versus PR alone for 24-48 weeks in the response-guided treatment of patients with AHC genotype (GT) 1 infection and HIV-1 coinfection in Germany and Great Britain.
RESULTS: 34 patients were included: 15 were randomi…

Although a considerable number of studies have been undertaken to date, it is still controversial as to whether or not coinfection with schistosomiasis increases the susceptibility to or progression from Hepatitis B virus (HBV) or Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. This review is a closer examination of the key studies conducted on human populations on clinical factors that were published in English between 1975 and January 2015. Our review is mainly based on tables containing the salient information, which are arranged first by study population, country of study and publication date. We provi…

Whipple's disease is a rare systemic condition resulting from a chronic infection by Tropheryma whipplei. Clinical presentation can be widel … to the hypothesis of a direct correlation with Whipple's disease. Interestingly, a Giardia lamblia coinfection was subsequently identified, which is consistent with an underlying immune deficit although still undefined.

The true incidence of pulmonary bacterial coinfection in infants and children hospitalized with a viral respiratory infection is difficult to ascertain but can vary widely from under 1 to 44%. For the same patient group admitted to pediatric intensive care units and/or requiring ventilatory support, the evidence is more convincing, with reported incidences of 17-39%. Studies covering influenza and respiratory syncytial virus infection dominate the recent literature. Whether treatment (or 'cover') with antibiotics is indicated/justified lies in the balance of risk of pulmonary bacterial coinfec…

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium-helminth coinfection can have a number of consequences for infected hosts, yet our knowledge of the epidemiology of coinfection across multiple settings is limited. This study investigates the distribution and heterogeneity of coinfection with Plasmodium falciparum and 3 major helminth species across East Africa.
METHODS: Cross-sectional parasite surveys were conducted among 28 050 children in 299 schools across a range of environmental settings in Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia. Data on individual, household, and environmental risk factors were collected and a spatially e…

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the epidemiology and outcome for patients with HIV coinfected with hepatitis in comparison with monoinfected patients.
METHODS: At the First Affiliated Hospital at Xinjiang Medical University in Urumqi, China, 395 patients were diagnosed with HIV between 2001 and 2010. The main routes of transmission were sexual (30%) and intravenous drug use (33%). The patient records were studied retrospectively.
RESULTS: A total of 135 patients had markers of viral hepatitis (34.2%). Abnormal liver function was seen among 48.9% of these patients. Hepatitis B surface antigen was posit

We present a case of mixed infection by two filariae (Loa loa and Mansonella perstans). It seems that the infection was suspected due to a pronounced eosinophilia in a routine analysis. Sheathed and unsheathed microfilariae were observed in the spread of peripheral blood, which enabled a diagnosis to be established of mixed infection by filariae. The definitive diagnosis of the species was carried out at the National Centre of Microbiolgy of Majadahonda. A treatment was initiated with dietilcarbamazina and mebendazole which resulted in the patient's being cured and in the elimination of the mi

The impact of concomitant S. mansoni infection on H. pylori induced gastritis was studied in twenty patients infected exclusively with H. pylori. The patients were compared with twenty patients coinfected with the bacteria and S. mansoni and twelve patients with schistosomiasis alone. All patients were subjected to clinical, parasitological, endoscopic and histopathological studies. In addition, serum malondialdehyde level (MDA), as an indicator of lipid peroxidation was measured. The results of revealed that severe gastritis was significantly more common in the patients infected exclusively w

A fatal case of mucosal leishmaniasis in a patient with AIDS is presented. Seventeen cases of L. brasiliensis coinfection in AIDS patients in Brazil have been presented at the meetings of The Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases. As in the case presented here, 4 cases with mucosal involvement also had negative delayed type hypersensitivity reactions to leishmania antigens. This lack of immunologic responsiveness, the invasive nature of the infection, and the poor response to therapy indicate that the combination of these two infections should be viewed as a new disease entity.

Babesiosis is a tick-borne infection caused by intraerythrocytic Babesia parasites and may result in severe hemolytic anemia and systemic complications. Coinfection with other Ixodes-borne pathogens may further complicate diagnosis and management. We report a 45-year-old immunocompetent man working as a landscaper in Connecticut who presented with syncope following two weeks of fever, fatigue, diaphoresis, arthralgias, jaundice, and dark urine. Laboratory evaluation revealed profound hemolytic anemia with a hemoglobin of 6.8 g/dL, elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), undetectable haptoglobin,…

Severe community-acquired pneumonia caused by coinfection with influenza A virus and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is rare but may lead to rapid clinical deterioration and high mortality. We report two pediatric cases of severe pneumonia associated with influenza A virus-S. aureus coinfection. Both patients initially presented with nonspecific influenza-like symptoms, followed by rapid progression to acute respiratory failure. One case was characterized by necrotizing pneumonia complicated by pneumothorax and empyema, with S. aureus isolated from respiratory specimens and pleural fluid. Th…

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing global syphilis incidence, little is known about the combined impact of maternal HIV and syphilis coinfection. We evaluated effects of HIV/syphilis coinfection in pregnancy on birth outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted 2 prospective birth cohort studies in Uganda from 2017 to 2023. Our primary outcome was birthweight. Our secondary outcome was a composite adverse birth outcome (birthweight <2.5 kg, stillbirth, early neonatal death, or 5-min APGAR<7). We compared outcomes by HIV and Treponema pallidum particle agglutination assay (TPPA) seropositivity and fitted multi…
