[The etiology of hypodontia].

Subject of our research were etiology and frequency of hypodontia and the possible effects of hypodontia on correct formation of dental arches in the course of dentition development. Methodologically the diagnostic records of 3238 patients of an orthodontic practice in Magdeburg, Germany, were evaluated. In addition to determining the frequency of hypodontia (8.1%), special attention was paid to accompanying micro-symptoms. 169 family members of 35 patients with teeth aplasia were questioned and examined and then extended family tables were drawn up. In addition, 105 dental casts from both pat…

Familial complex chromosomal rearrangement resulting in duplication/deletion of 6q14 to 6q16.

A familial complex chromosomal rearrangement (CCR) was ascertained through a mentally retarded, dysmorphic individual. Carriers of the CCR have the karyotype 46,XX or XY, t(6;15)(q16;q21), ins(3;6)(q12;q14q16), and malsegregation of the CCR resulted in loss of the segment 6q14 to 6q16 in the proband, and in an additional copy of the same segment in three members of the extended family. The proband has features similar to other reported cases with deletion of 6q1. The individuals with duplication of 6q14 to 6q16 have moderate mental retardation, short stature, obesity, microcephaly, brachycepha…

Cisnormativity, human rights and vulnerability of young transgender women to HIV: An analysis based on their youth trajectories.

In Brazil, young transgender women (YTW) bear a disproportionate burden of HIV, which persists despite technological advances in biomedical prevention. This study explores how rights violations across different areas of life shape YTW's vulnerability to HIV through an intersectional lens. We conducted 13 in-depth interviews and one group interview with YTW participating in an HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) cohort. Thematic analysis with intersectional sensibility focused on six dimensions: family, schooling, romantic-sexual relationships, friendships, work, and health. The results show th

Introducing A Family With Tens of Rare Craniofacial Clefts.

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial clefts are one of the rarest congenital malformations. When it comes to genetic inheritance patterns of craniofacial clefts, there are few studies on this subject due to the rarity and sporadic nature. In this study an extended family whose members have multiple craniofacial clefts has been introduced. METHODS: The authors haphazardly found a family whose members have craniofacial clefts, either Tessier no. 0 or both Tessier nos. 0 and 14, and, consequently, they were categorized into 3 groups based on the severity of clefts. RESULTS: Forty-two craniofacial clefts we…

HLA and narcolepsy in a German population.

In this paper the first MHC data including HLA-A, B, C, DR, DQ and complement BF, C4A, C4B determinants in German narcoleptics are presented together with the first family studies in European Caucasoids. 57 out of 58 unrelated patients (98.3%) were positive for DR2 and DQw1, respectively. In contrast to all other reports, one patient with typical signs of narcolepsy was found to be DR2/DQw1 negative. Data showing significant increase in the frequency of B7, and normal frequencies of B35 were discordant with data from Japanese patients. Definition of the extended DR2 linked haplotypes, deduced

The amphisbaenian ear: Blanus cinereus and Diplometopon zarudnyi.

Observations on the structure and function of the ear in amphisbaenians have been extended to two new species: to Blanus cinereus of the family Amphisbaenidae and Diplometopon zarudnyi of the family Trogonophidae. Blanus, considered one of the most primitive of this group of reptiles, shows a distinctive form of sound-receptive mechanism. The usual extracolumella is lacking, and the columella attaches to a cartilaginous plate beneath the skin posterior to the facial area. Diplometopon zarudnyi, a highly modified trogonophid, shows a columella and extracolumella of massive dimensions, with cons

Co-Designing a Family e-Hub: A Systemic, Relational, Digital Mental Health Resource.

Access to family and systemic therapies remains limited. Digital mental health interventions offer potential to extend access; however, most are designed for individual users, presenting challenges when engaging multiple members of a family. This study used a participatory co-design approach to inform the development of the Family e-Hub, a systemic, self-guided digital resource grounded in family-specific design principles. Drawing on the perspectives of consumers with lived experience of family therapy and family therapists, the study aimed to co-design recommendations for Family e-Hub conten

Hereditary myoclonus-dystonia associated with epilepsy.

A five-generation Dutch family with inherited myoclonus-dystonia (M-D) is described. Genetic analysis revealed a novel truncating mutation within the epsilon-sarcoglycan gene (SGCE). In three of five gene carriers, epilepsy and/or EEG abnormalities were associated with the symptoms of myoclonus and dystonia. The genetic and clinical heterogeneity of M-D is extended. EEG changes and epilepsy should not be considered exclusion criteria for the clinical diagnosis of M-D.

Recent advances in psychological therapies for eating disorders.

Recent years have seen substantial consolidation and development of the evidence base for psychological therapies for eating disorders. This review summarises the key changes over that time period. Specific forms of cognitive behavioural therapy and family-based treatment have consolidated and extended their positions as treatments of choice despite the development of novel approaches. However, there is still a significant need for further development and testing to improve recovery rates, particularly in anorexia nervosa.

Treating Tourette syndrome with haloperidol: predictors of success.

The relationship between a medication course with haloperidol (Haldol) and family history for any type of tics was examined in a survey of 196 Tourette syndrome patients. Those with no family history of tics had a high probability of success with haloperidol therapy only. A positive family history increased the likelihood of medication changes after an initial trial of the drug. Surprisingly, we found that patient gender rather than family history was more likely to predict a successful treatment outcome with haloperidol. The data suggest a complex, multifactorial pathology for Tourette syndro

Application of the Xi robotic platform for familial adenomatous polyposis with ultra-low rectal cancer: exploration of minimally invasive and refined therapies.

When a familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) patient's rectal polyp undergoes malignant transformation, the surgeon needs to consider how to balance the quality of surgery with the patient's quality of life. Here, we present a case of robotic surgery in a patient with familial adenomatous polyposis and ultra-low rectal cancer. Fiberoptic colonoscopy found that hundreds of polyp-like bulges were diffusely distributed throughout the colon, and a malignant mass was found at the end of the rectum. The patient underwent total colectomy with abdominoperineal extended radical resection for rectal canc

New simple tests for age-at-onset anticipation: application to panic disorder.

Recently, testing for anticipation has received renewed interest. It is well known that standard statistical methods are inappropriate for this purpose due to problems of sampling bias. Few statistical tests have been proposed for comparing mean age of onset in affected parents with mean age of onset in affected children. All of them are difficult to compute and lack software to perform the tests. In this report, we formulate the problem in terms of symmetry tests. We propose a simple generalized paired t-test and a Wilcoxon signed rank test to adjust for the bias caused by the right truncatio

Familial spastic paraplegia: an electrophysiological study of central sensory conduction pathways.

An electrophysiological assessment has been performed studying somatosensory, visual and auditory pathways in clinically affected and unaffected members from 4 pedigrees with the autosomal form of 'pure' familial spastic paraplegia (n = 32). In some members from 2 families, testing of all 3 sensory pathways showed abnormal results, even in those clinically unaffected. In another family, some had abnormal somatosensory and visual pathways, with no involvement of the auditory pathway. In a further family, the somatosensory and brainstem auditory pathways were abnormal, with sparing of the visual

Whole genome genotyping mapped regions on chromosome 2 and 18 in a family segregating Waardenburg syndrome type II.

OBJECTIVES: Waardenburg syndrome is a rare genetic disorder. It is characterized by sensorineural hearing impairment and pigment defects of the skin, hair and iris. In some cases abnormalities in the tissues derived from neural crest have also been reported. Mutations in several genes have been reported as an underlying cause of Waardenburg syndrome. Objective of this study is to identify the chromosomal region(s) associated with Waardenburg syndrome in an extended Saudi family. METHODS: Genomic DNA was extracted from fifteen individuals of a Saudi family segregating Waardenburg syndrome. Who

Linkage and association studies identify a novel locus for Alzheimer disease at 7q36 in a Dutch population-based sample.

We obtained conclusive linkage of Alzheimer disease (AD) with a candidate region of 19.7 cM at 7q36 in an extended multiplex family, family 1270, ascertained in a population-based study of early-onset AD in the northern Netherlands. Single-nucleotide polymorphism and haplotype association analyses of a Dutch patient-control sample further supported the linkage at 7q36. In addition, we identified a shared haplotype at 7q36 between family 1270 and three of six multiplex AD-affected families from the same geographical region, which is indicative of a founder effect and defines a priority region o

Familial cavernous malformations in a large French kindred: mapping of the gene to the CCM1 locus on chromosome 7q.

OBJECTIVES: To characterise clinically a large French family affected with cerebral cavernomas and to check for linkage of this condition to chromosome 7. METHODS: A family, originating from Normandy and in which five members had undergone surgery for cavernomas, was extended. All members older than 18 were studied clinically and by neuroimaging. Genetic linkage analysis was conducted using 11 polymorphic microsatellite markers located between D7S502 and D7S479. RESULTS: The family included three generations. Among the 25 members investigated, 11 had an abnormal cerebral MRI, eight of them b

A Family Caregiver Perspective on Fragmented Continuity of Care for an Elderly Female Patient With Upper Limb Fracture.

Older women have a higher risk of osteoporosis and fractures than men after menopause. This article presents a family caregiver's first-person perspective on navigating the healthcare system while caring for an 85-year-old mother following a left upper limb fracture requiring cast immobilization. Older women with fractures require extended care at home, where family members take on responsibilities usually handled by health professionals. The perspective reflects on systemic gaps in post-discharge continuity of care, particularly the limited clinical involvement of primary healthcare services

"Will you be there for me?" Social support from family and friends during cold case sexual assault prosecutions.

If sexual assault survivors report the assault to the criminal legal system, they often need informal support from family and friends throughout the long and frequently retraumatizing process of investigation and prosecution. This study is part of a long-term community-based participatory action research project in a predominately Black/African American U.S. city that is facing extended delays in sexual assault prosecution because the police have not been routinely testing medical forensic evidence when sexual assaults were first reported. When police had this evidence tested years later, case
