T-wave inversion after a severe head injury without ischemic heart disease.

Electrocardiographic changes mimicking an acute coronary event with T-wave inversion have been reported in the resting electrocardiogram in patients without ischemic heart disease but with acute ischemic stroke, or subarachnoid hemorrhage, or intracerebral hemorrhage, or a severe head injury. We present a case of T-wave inversion in a 73-year-old Italian woman admitted to the Emergency Department following a severe head injury. Pericarditis, pericardial effusion, and acute coronary event were excluded. Ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and intracerebral hemorrhage were also excluded. A

Effects of water-soluble antioxidant from spinach, NAO, on doxorubicin-induced heart injury.

Doxorubicin (DOX) produces clinically restorative responses in numerous human cancers, but its cardiotoxicity has limited its usefulness. Because reactive oxygen species may affect DOX-induced antitumor activity and cardiotoxicity, we evaluated the prophylactic effect of spinach natural antioxidant (NAO) on DOX-induced cardiotoxicity and oxidative stress in female Balb/c mice using histological, electron microscopical and biochemical parameters. Mice were treated with NAO for 7 days prior to and/or for 6 days after DOX administration. Pretreatment with NAO (cumulative dose: 130 mg/kg) did not

Protection of rat heart from ischaemia-reperfusion injury by the 21-aminosteroid U-74389G.

In ischaemia-reperfusion syndromes lipid peroxidation appears an important factor contributing to tissue damage. The 21-aminosteroids (lazaroids) exhibit beneficial effects in various pathological conditions, especially in post-traumatic lesions of the central nervous system, where a peroxidative injury seems to be involved. The aim of our study was to ascertain if one of these compounds, U-74389G, plays a significant role in protecting heart muscle from ischaemia-reperfusion damage. Rat hearts used for heterotopic transplantation represented the experimental model in this investigation. Anima

Myocardial injury without heart failure following envenomation by the scorpion Leiurus quinquestriatus in children.

The enzymatic activity of creatine kinase-MB isoenzyme (CK-MB), a sensitive and specific marker of myocardial damage, was measured in 32 children following scorpion envenomation. CK-MB activity, total creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and serum glutamine oxalacetic transaminase (SGOT) levels were examined for relationship with electrocardiographic (ECG) results and the clinical state of the children. Twenty-seven out of the 32 children had signs of systemic intoxication ("symptomatic" cases), while the other five children had only local signs ("asymptomatic" cases). Thirteen out of the 27 symptomat

Ischemic heart disease in the WHHL rabbit: a model for myocardial injury in genetically hyperlipidemic animals.

Myocardial lesions were frequently found in homozygous Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbits. The lesions were of two types. One consisted of a dissolution of muscle cells with inflammatory cell infiltrate. The other consisted of replacement fibrosis. The more the lumens of at least one of the three main coronary arteries were narrowed by atherosclerosis, the more the myocardial lesions occurred. The greater the number of vessels that were occluded, the more the incidence of myocardial lesions increased. From the age distribution of rabbits which died of natural causes, the average

Do platelets protect the heart against ischemia/reperfusion injury or exacerbate cardiac ischemia/reperfusion injury? The role of PDGF, VEGF, and PAF.

BACKGROUND: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is one of the main causes of death. It is quite obvious that there is an urgent need to develop new approaches for treatment of AMI. OBJECTIVE: This review analyzes data on the role of platelets in the regulation of cardiac tolerance to ischemia/reperfusion (I/R). METHODS: It was performed a search of topical articles using PubMed databases. FINDINGS: Platelets activated by a cholesterol-enriched diet, thrombin, and myocardial ischemia exacerbate I/R injury of the heart. The P2Y12 receptor antagonists, remote ischemic postconditioning and condit

Variations in ischemic heart disease burden by age, country, and income: the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors 2010 study.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) was the leading cause of disease burden worldwide in 2010. The majority of IHD burden affected middle-income regions. We hypothesized IHD burden may vary among countries, even within the same broad geographic region. METHODS: Disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) due to IHD were estimated at the region level for 7 “super-regions,” 21 regions, and 187 countries using geographically nested models for IHD mortality and prevalent nonfatal IHD (nonfatal acute myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, or ischemic heart failure). Acute myocardial infarction, a

No difference in biomarkers of ischemic heart injury and heart failure in patients with COVID-19 who received treatment with chloroquine phosphate and those who did not.

BACKGROUND: Chloroquine was promoted as a COVID-19 therapeutic early in the pandemic. Most countries have since discontinued the use of chloroquine due to lack of evidence of any benefit and the risk of severe adverse events. The primary aim of this study was to examine if administering chloroquine during COVID-19 imposed an increased risk of ischemic heart injury or heart failure. METHODS: Medical records, laboratory findings, and electrocardiograms of patients with COVID-19 who were treated with 500 mg chloroquine phosphate daily and controls not treated with chloroquine were reviewed retro

Biofeedback Using Virtual Reality and Yoga Pranayama Modulates Blood Pressure and Heart Rate Variability in People with and without Cervical Spinal Cord Injuries.

Techniques for rapid blood pressure modification without the side-effects associated with pharmaceuticals are urgently needed, especially for individuals with spinal cord injuries above thoracic level six (T6). Such cervical injuries lead to sympathetic nervous system dysfunction, negatively affecting cardiovascular health and quality of life. Our biofeedback protocol aimed to teach participants to self-modulate their blood pressure using yoga breathwork (kapalabhati and brahmari pranayama), virtual reality imagery, autogenics, and interoceptive attention. In this cohort study, we trained 13 p

Glycyrrhetinic Acid protects the heart from ischemia/reperfusion injury by attenuating the susceptibility and incidence of fatal ventricular arrhythmia during the reperfusion period in the rat hearts.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Licorice has been used to treat many diseases, including palpitations, in both Eastern and Western societies for thousands of years. It has been reported that glycyrrhetinic acid (GA), an aglycone saponin extracted from licorice root, exerts protective effects on the cardiovascular system, limits infarct sizes and protects against the development of arrhythmia. However, the mechanisms underlying the effects of glycyrrhetinic acid on the cardiovascular system remain poorly understood. This study aimed to determine the mechanisms underlying the protective effects of GA against l

Epicardial extracellular vesicles modulate gene expression following ischemia-reperfusion injury in heart-on-a-chip.

The epicardium is an essential regulator of cardiac development, homeostasis, and injury, yet the composition and impacts of epicardial cell-secreted extracellular vesicles (EVs) remain incompletely understood. Here, we harness an epicardial Biowire platform integrating human stem cell derived epicardial cells with functional myocardium and apply transcriptomics to reveal enriched EV transport in tissues containing epicardial cells. Profiling epicardial-EVs identified key miRNAs and their conservation through stimulated epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. Supplementation of epicardial-EVs to

Heart rate variability biofeedback in adults with chronic spinal cord injury: a randomised feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-F) is a neurocardiac self-regulation therapy, that has been shown to improve cardiac autonomic regulation, emotional regulation, and cognitive function in various clinical populations. Despite this, there is little evidence for the benefit of HRV-F in adults with spinal cord injury (SCI). METHODS: This study evaluated the feasibility of conducting a parallel randomised controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate the effectiveness of a 10-week HRV-F intervention for adults with chronic SCI. Individuals with SCI (irrespective of level and completeness)
