OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of intravenously administered interferon-alpha-2B for the prevention of testicular atrophy in postpubertal men with mumps orchitis.
METHODS: Eighteen patients with mumps orchitis were evaluated. The patients were hospitalized, and 3 x 1,000,000 IU intravenous interferon-alpha-2B was administered daily for a total of 7 days. All patients were evaluated by testicular biopsy on the 12th month after interferon treatment.

OBJECTIVES: To describe a patient who developed an unusual polyneuropathy after treatment with interferon alfa-2a for hepatitis C and to discuss issues related to diagnosis and pathogenesis.
DESIGN: Case report.
SETTING: Tertiary care center.
CASE: A 46-year-old man with chronic hepatitis C had acute onset of an axonal polyneuropathy with prominent small-fiber involvement shortly after completing a standard 6-month course of therapy with low-dose interferon alfa-2a.
MAIN OUTCOME AND RESULTS: Further interferon treatment for hepatitis C was discontinued.

This report describes a neonate with dermal hematopoiesis associated with diffuse hemangiomatosis. The cutaneous lesions consisted of multiple red papules and bluish subcutaneous nodules scattered over his body. The nodules were bluish due to the presence of hematopoietic tissue within the hemangiomas. Although neonatal dermal hematopoiesis has been described with viral infections or hematologic dyscrasias, the association with diffuse hemangiomatosis has not been previously described.

Three patients with generalized lichen planus were treated with interferon alfa-2b. The therapy was tolerated well by all patients with only minor side effects. A response was observed within 2 to 3 weeks. Itching and erythema decreased first, followed by gradual flattening and disappearance of papules and plaques after 8 to 10 weeks of treatment. After 12 weeks, therapy was discontinued after stepwise dosage reduction. In two patients, minor lesions recurred during dosage reduction. Both flares were controlled by readministration of interferon.

The use of interferon (INF) is usually considered safe, the major side-effect being a flu-like syndrome. However, with its ability to alter immune responsiveness, INF has been associated with the induction of autoimmune diseases. We report a patient with Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia who developed a generalized blistering eruption after treatment with systemic INF-alpha 2A (INF) for multiple skin cancers. The patient's skin showed histological features, immunofluorescence findings, and immunoprecipitation diagnostic of paraneoplastic pemphigus. Despite aggressive treatment the patient died.

Up to 30% of patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) are refractory to standard therapy with corticosteroids and splenectomy. Sixteen patients with acute hepatitis C having a duration of illness more than three months without recovery were randomly assigned to treatment with interferon (IFN). 8 patients received 3 million units a day during the first week and 3 million units every other day for the following 11 weeks. The combination of alpha-interferon and octreotide has rarely been tested in the treatment of carcinoid syndrome. We describe a patient who was moribund when treated with interferon alone, but enjoyed a dramatic response leading to disappearance of all symptoms, normalization of dU-5-HIAA, and restoration of his normal life-style when octreotide was initiated. Neither interferon nor octreotide could be withdrawn without reappearance of the symptoms, suggesting that the combination of alpha-interferon and octreotide may have synergistic effects in carcinoid syndrome.

This case report describes a 42-year-old male with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) who developed hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) following treatment with peginterferon alfa-2b (PegIFN-α-2b). BACKGROUND: A 68-year-old male diagnosed with left-side renal cell carcinoma, and in clinical remission for 3 years following a nephrectomy, presented with a 2-month history of progressive difficulty in swallowing, accompanied by a new growth in the palate. Examination revealed a 25 mm x 25 mm soft-tissue growth at the junction of the hard and soft palate. Systemic examination did not reveal any other evidence of cancer progression.
