BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial trauma represents a significant challenge in emergency medicine, requiring both diagnostic accuracy and prompt intervention while balancing immediate life-saving interventions with preservation of function and aesthetics. The complex anatomy of this region, with its proximity to critical structures, demands a thorough understanding of assessment and management principles. This narrative review aims to provide evidence-based guidelines for emergency physicians managing maxillofacial trauma, with particular emphasis on early recognition of critical injuries, airway mana

Traumatic injuries involving the oral cavity in children often result from falls or collisions with stationary objects. Repair of lacerations involving the soft tissue structures within the oral cavity is described. These injuries often can be managed by emergency department personnel, with referral to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for follow-up care. Initial management of more extensive injuries such as dentoalveolar fractures, penetrating injuries and burns is also described. Immediate consultation with the appropriate specialist is suggested, because significant deformity and/or morbidi

Dog attacks are extremely frequent and are thought to be responsible for an average of 250,000 minor injuries and emergency unit attendances each year. Children in particular are more likely to experience dog-bite injuries with 5-9-year olds most susceptible. The majority of injuries are to the head region, with the lips, cheeks, and nose often affected. Most injuries experienced are confined to the soft tissues; nevertheless, maxillofacial fracture is a potential albeit rare complication. The incidence of facial fractures in relation to dog bites is unknown; however, some have estimated that

The maxillofacial region consists of soft and hard tissues that form the face and extend from the frontal bone superiorly to the mandible inferiorly. Because the face is the most exposed part of the body, it is especially vulnerable to trauma. Trauma to the maxillofacial regions is a major public health problem worldwide. Nearly 5% to 10% of trauma patients have facial fractures. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the etiology and pattern of maxillofacial fractures among patients who visited Jimma Medical Center (JMC) dental clinic, Southwest Ethiopia. Institutional based retrospective

A survey was undertaken to assess changes in the aetiology of maxillofacial fractures in the United Kingdom between 1977 and 1987, using data which had been collected in British departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Data were available from units serving 17 million people and included details of patients from a broad spread of rural and urban areas. Analysis of data from the 27 maxillofacial units able to supply details from both 1977 and 1987 showed an overall increase of 20% in numbers of patients with maxillofacial fractures, though a trend towards fewer severe injuries was also a

OBJECTIVE: The orofacial injuries (temporomandibular joint (TMJ) injuries, mandible fractures, etc.) represent a high incidence in sports medicine. But the mechanism of injuries caused by sport impacts was poorly studied. This study aimed to fill this gap.
DESIGN: Different frontal impacts were applied to the finite element model. The motions and biomechanical responses of the joint and mandible were analyzed and compared with active open-closing mouth movement in order to evaluate injury causes.
METHODS: Firstly, the maxillofacial morphology and open-closing motion were captured. Then an im

Orbital cellulitis is an uncommon condition with risks to sight and life. As a complication of maxillofacial injuries, the literature suggests this is only possible with fractures or direct inoculation, and there are no reports to the contrary. Here, we make the first report of a possible etiology by which orbital cellulitis developed in a 14-year-old boy even without skin breach or bony fractures; as well as a rare causative pathogen. He presented with facial abscess and progressive orbital cellulitis after blunt facial trauma, requiring functional endoscopic sinus surgery with needle aspirat…

Maxillofacial trauma is without doubt still a very challenging area, especially in the early stages of care when other injuries may be present. Craniofacial trauma, with or without life and/or sight-threatening complications, may be associated with significant injuries elsewhere. Both general trauma and facial trauma management have evolved considerably over the last 20 years and on occasion clinical priorities may seemingly conflict, suddenly change or be hidden. In these circumstances a number of clinical dilemmas may arise, which this and three further reviews will discuss. These are based

Maxillofacial fractures in Japanese children were retrospectively analyzed. The subjects were 287 patients aged 15 years and younger seeking treatment for maxillofacial fractures in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Nara Medical University. The patients were 186 males and 101 females. Injuries most frequently occurred as a result of traffic accidents in 125 patients, 92 of which were bicycle-related accidents. Injuries by falling from one level to another were found in 49, primarily in younger children. One hundred seventy-nine fractures occurred in the mandible, 100 in the mid

Postburn maxillofacial deformities, although rare, are a significant cause of morbidity. Since contracture scars have a potential role in deforming the maxillofacial skeleton, the focus of treatment should be on growing patients, where scar contractures can drastically influence growth and morphology of the maxillofacial units. There are certain aspects of severe facial burns and deformities, especially of the jaws, that deserve sincere attention to overcome aesthetic and functional disabilities such as inability to masticate and incompetent lips. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to

Severe facial wounds frequently result from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) as the face is still vulnerable despite advances in personal protection of soldiers. In contrast to the poor outcomes with civilian maxillofacial trauma management methods initially employed by the US Army for maxillofacial wounds from IEDs, advances in wound management methods for such injuries by the US Army have resulted in significant improvements in appearance and function. This article describes the features of a short course in the primary management of combat related maxillofacial wounds for deployed health

Severe epistaxis in the multiple trauma victim can be rapidly controlled with immediate insertion of the intranasal anteroposterior balloon. The patient's other life threatening injuries can then be assessed in an orderly fashion. Once the patient has been stabilized, the balloon can be deflated and removed and the patient's maxillofacial injuries assessed and treated in a controlled setting.

Ballistic trauma is a serious health issue with significant costs to physical, psychosocial, economic, and societal well-being. It may be caused from firearms, explosive devices, or any other projectile forces, and is characterized by severe tissue loss and evolving tissue devitalization. This review covers mechanism, diagnosis, and management of ballistic maxillofacial trauma, specifically. Initial evaluation includes stabilization of airway, bleeding, and circulation, followed by assessment of other injuries. The overall degree of tissue damage is determined by intrinsic patient factors and

Unlike severe head injuries upon which much attention is focused, mild or moderate brain injuries are not or not well known and often neglected in maxillofacial surgery. Nevertheless, they are frequent in our routine facial traumatology activity. Studying the epidemiological data shows that mild brain injuries account for 64 to 94% of all head injured patients whereas moderate injuries occur in 3 to 23%. Furthermore, owing to their frequent occurrence, their high potential for sequelae and because they especially affect young people, they are a real public-health problem.

Airway compromise is life threatening complication in the maxillofacial fracture. However, the incident of the airway compromise following mandibular fracture was little known. Maxillofacial fractures during the past 3 years from 2017 to 2020 were investigated retrospectively. There were 154 patients with maxillofacial fractures were noted in the past 3 years. Mandibular fractures accounted for 93% of the maxillofacial fracture. The most common cause of injury was falls (75%), followed by sports (12%). Of these, 3 cases (1.9%) needed an airway management at the time of initial treatment, and a
