OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine the incidence and characteristics of women who develop a second molar pregnancy after a previous episode of gestational trophoblastic disease.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was carried out on completed registration forms from referring hospitals in the North of England to the Sheffield Trophoblastic Screening Service over a 13-year period. OBJECTIVE: To describe the relation between PRL and hCG, T3, T4, fT4, TSH, E2 and P4 levels in normal pregnancies and those complicated with GTD.
METHOD: Twenty women, 10 with normal pregnancy and 10 with molar pregnancy were studied. Serial serum progesterone and beta human chorionic gonadotropin (beta hCG) levels were measured during surveillance of 24 women at risk for development of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) following evacuation of complete molar gestations. Six of the 24 patients developed post-molar GTN. The initial median progesterone level of 76 ng/ml in these six patients drawn at evacuation was significantly higher than the median of 18 ng/ml in those not developing GTN (P = 0.026). Forty-one molar pregnancies seen at the University Teaching Hospital Enugu, Nigeria during the 10-year period 1976-1985 are analyzed. The incidence of hydatidiform mole was 0.82 per 1000 pregnancies. The incidence of molar pregnancy was lowest among teenage women and increased markedly with advancing age over 35 years. Hyperemesis gravidarum, a relatively uncommon finding in Nigerian women during normal pregnancy was a prominent feature of molar pregnancy in the women. Three maternal deaths with hydatidiform molar pregnancies associated with severe hemorrhage and coagulopathy are described. Symptoms of coagulation abnormalities are few in mild degrees of intravascular coagulation. This paper addresses the importance of anticipating a coagulopathy in hydatidiform molar pregnancy even before evacuation of the abnormal conceptus since evacuation aggravates fibrinolytic activity and therefore increases hemorrhage in these conditions.

Plasma testosterone levels in 14 patients with intact molar pregnancy were found to be elevated compared to patients with normal pregnancies of corresponding gestation. The plasma testosterone concentration ranged from 2-0 to 8-4 ng/ml with a mean +/- SE of 5-2 +/- 0-5 ng/ml. After evacuation of the uterus, there was a significant fall in plasma testosterone levels which ranged from 1-6 to 5-9 ng/ml with a mean +/- SE of 3-2 +/-0-3 ng/ml. The trophoblast might have been the source of extra testosterone in molar pregnancy.

Arylsulfatase activity has been studied in the developing molar of the Swiss albino mouse from the lamina stage to the appositional stage. Timed-pregnant Swiss albino mice were utilized in this study. Females were sacrificed by ether anesthesia and fetuses extirpated or newborns anesthetized and decapitated.
