The Class II Carriere Motion appliance.

OBJECTIVES: To determine three-dimensional treatment changes produced by the Class II Carriere Motion appliance (CMA) in Class II adolescent patients with Class I and Class II skeletal relationships. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample included 59 adolescents (16 boys and 43 girls) with unilateral or bilateral Class II molar and bilateral Class II canine relationship. They were divided into group 1 with skeletal Class I (N = 27; ANB 2.90° ± 1.40°; 13.30 ± 1.53 years) and group 2 with skeletal Class II (N = 32; ANB 6.06° ± 1.64°; 13.26 ± 1.76 years). Cone beam computed tomography images were tra…

Biological Motion Perception in Huntington's Disease.

BACKGROUND: The ability of healthy individuals to detect biological motion by using a small number of moving points is well established in animals and humans. Perception of human movements may depend on internal models that drive self-generated movements and influence motion discrimination (Reed CL et al. 1995 and 2007). As a person's motor repertoire deteriorates, the accuracy of these models may also decrease. OBJECTIVE: Determine if people with symptomatic Huntington's disease (HD) have difficulty perceiving movements. METHODS: In this study point-light displays were created with a Vicon …

Motion parallax for 360° RGBD video.

We present a method for adding parallax and real-time playback of 360° videos in Virtual Reality headsets. In current video players, the playback does not respond to translational head movement, which reduces the feeling of immersion, and causes motion sickness for some viewers. Given a 360° video and its corresponding depth (provided by current stereo 360° stitching algorithms), a naive image-based rendering approach would use the depth to generate a 3D mesh around the viewer, then translate it appropriately as the viewer moves their head. However, this approach breaks at depth discontinuitie…

Altered motion repulsion in Alzheimer's disease.

Recent research in Alzheimer's disease (AD) indicates that perceptual impairments may occur before the onset of cognitive declines, and can thus serve as an early noninvasive indicator for AD. In this study, we focused on visual motion processing and explored whether AD induces changes in the properties of direction repulsion between two competing motions. We used random dot kinematograms (RDKs) and measured the magnitudes of direction repulsion between two overlapping RDKs moving different directions in three groups of participants: an AD group, an age-matched old control group, and a young c…

EEG Correlates of Relative Motion Encoding.

A large portion of the visual cortex is organized retinotopically, but perception is usually non-retinotopic. For example, a reflector on the spoke of a bicycle wheel appears to move on a circular or prolate cycloidal orbit as the bicycle moves forward, while in fact it traces out a curtate cycloidal trajectory. The moving bicycle serves as a non-retinotopic reference system to which the motion of the reflector is anchored. To study the neural correlates of non-retinotopic motion processing, we used the Ternus-Pikler display, where retinotopic processing in a stationary reference system is con…

Motion perception deficit in Down Syndrome.

It is a well established fact that Down Syndrome (DS) individuals have a tendency to develop Alzheimer's disease (AD) (Lott, I.T., Head, E., 2005. Alzheimer disease and Down syndrome: factors in pathogenesis. Neurobiol. Aging 26, 383-389). They have therefore been proposed as a model to study the pre-dementia stage of Alzheimer's (Mann, D.M., 1988. The pathological association between Down syndrome and Alzheimer disease. Mech. Ageing Dev. 43, 99-136). One of the specific deficits exhibited by AD patients is optic flow motion perception (Tetewsky, S.J., Duffy, C.J., 1999. Visual loss and gettin…

Labyrinthine lesions and motion sickness susceptibility.

The angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) has a fast pathway, which mediates compensatory eye movements, and a slow (velocity storage) pathway, which determines its low frequency characteristics and orients eye velocity toward gravity. We have proposed that motion sickness is generated through velocity storage, when its orientation vector, which lies close to the gravitational vertical, is misaligned with eye velocity during head motion. The duration of the misalignment, determined by the dominant time constant of velocity storage, causes the buildup of motion sickness. To test this hypothesi…

Motion processing specialization in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by severe spatial deficits and relatively spared language. Although initial research suggested that WS entails a generalized motion processing deficit, later work demonstrated intact biological motion perception in people with WS, reflecting a sparing of a specific motion perception system. The present study examined whether this sparing is unique to biological motion, or extends to other motion tasks as well. WS children and adults and normal controls were tested to examine developmental changes across a variety of motion tasks. …

Binocular coordination in fore/aft motion.

Stabilization of images on the fovea during either fore/aft translation of a subject or fore/aft movement of a visual target in front of a s … on, such as pursuit. Thus, in a second set of experiments we used the mean profile of fore\aft body motion computed for each subject to drive a small visual target across the same distances and in the same eccentricities used during body translations. We found that visually driven responses had longer latencies (by at least 80 ms, ranging from 144 to 155 …

Motion sickness: its pathophysiology and treatment.

The pathogenesis of motion sickness includes both inner-ear stimulation by body movement, especially a Coriolis-type stimulus, and optokinetic stimulation due to the shift of the surrounding visual fields. According to Kornhuber, Sakata and others, the vestibular cerebellum also participates in an important way. We conducted this study to elucidate the influence of the vestibular cerebellum on the development of motion sickness. We initially focused attention on the visual suppression test of Takemori et al. as a test for vestibular cerebellar function. We reported a modification of this test,…

Epileptic kinetopsia: ictal illusory motion perception.

A 38-year-old woman with a right posterior temporo-occipital brain tumor developed partial seizures with illusory motion perception of environmental objects going from the center to the periphery within her left visual field. Subdural EEG recordings during visual seizures revealed onsets in the right temporo-parieto-occipital junction. Her ictal visual distortion was probably caused by activation of V5, an area involved in motion perception. Given that the tumor location corresponds with the ictal onset in the V5 area, and the semiology of her seizures, this case supports that epileptic dysfun…

Cough and paradoxical vocal fold motion.

OBJECTIVES: The differential diagnosis and treatment of patients with chronic cough, paradoxical vocal fold motion, and disordered breathing can be a challenge to most practicing otolaryngologists. Tracheobronchial (ie, asthma, bronchitis, and tracheal stenosis), laryngeal (ie, vocal fold paralysis and neoplasms), and rhinologic (ie, allergies and rhinosinusitis) etiologies are commonly diagnosed and treated effectively. However, occasionally one is faced with patients who are refractory to medical treatment and have no obvious rhinologic, laryngeal or pulmonary cause. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTIN…

Squirrel monkeys and space motion sickness.

Studies of the vestibular system in squirrel monkeys in consideration of space motion sickness (SMS) or space adaptation syndrome (SAS) were reviewed. First, the phylogenetic position of the squirrel monkey was considered. Then the anatomico-physiological studies of both the peripheral and the central vestibular systems were described, because the vestibular system is crucially important in the genesis of SMS (SAS). In this connection, the ablation studies of labyrinth, semicircular canals, and other SAS-related areas were referred to, and consideration was made for experiments about caloric i…

Optokinetic nystagmus, vection, and motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Two current theories concerning the etiology of motion sickness (MS)-the eye movement hypothesis and sensory conflict theory-were evaluated under conditions that manipulated the degree of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) and/or vection. METHOD: Eye movement and perceptual responses were elicited with whole field stimulation in a vertically striped rotating drum and modulated with fixation and/or a restriction of the field of view (FOV). Measures of OKN, vection, and MS were recorded under the various conditions. RESULTS: Both visual field restriction and/or fixation diminished circula…

Hand motion assessment and rehabilitation system.

Along with the rapid development of information technology, computers play an increasingly prominent and important role. One current trend is to use computers as instruments for physical rehabilitation. In this study, we introduce a new hand motion assessment and rehabilitation system. This system assesses a user's grip strength and records the sudden changes in air pressure through a circuit and A/D adapter. A PC interface transforms and saves the data in a data record file. The data is then compiled and combined with a patient's case history and keyed into a database as reference for clinica…

Motion sickness: only one provocative conflict?

In reviewing the various forms of motion sickness, the classic sensory rearrangement theory has been redefined by demonstrating that only one type of conflict is necessary and sufficient to explain all different kinds of motion sickness. A mathematical description is provided from the summarizing statement that "All situations which provoke motion sickness are characterised by a condition in which the sensed vertical as determined on the basis of integrated information from the eyes, the vestibular system and the nonvestibular proprioceptors is at variance with the subjective vertical as expec…

Motion direction discrimination in blind hemifields.

We tested motion direction discrimination with random dot cinematograms (RDCs) projected into the contralateral homonymous visual field defects of 10 patients with unilateral cerebral hemispheric lesions. Five patients had medial occipital lesions that spared the putative motion area in lateral occipitotemporal cortex and the optic radiations and other white matter tracts proximal to this site. The other 5 had lesions involving this area or the proximal optic radiations. Eye position was monitored to ensure fixation. No patient in either group discriminated motion direction in signal/noise RDC…
