A 15 month-old girl was admitted after a couple of months' history of illness with remittent fever, increasing pallor and a swollen abdomen. On admission she was highly febrile, with palpably enlarged liver and spleen. Blood tests revealed pancytopenia, a high CRP level and a high serum ferritin level. An unusual case of hepatic hydatid cyst in a 27-year old female is reported. The patient had abdominal distention of 10-year duration, pain, pallor of mucous membranes, and was grossly wasted. Ultrasonography revealed a large hydatid cyst that covered most of the abdomen. A successful surgical intervention was performed and 24 litres of hydatid fluid drained.

The authors reported 122 cases of kala-azar admitted at Tunisian Children's hospital between 1974 and 1988. This affection was concerned male child and 78% of cases were aged less than 3 years old. The clinical feature was pallor, fever and splenomegaly. The diagnosis of kala-azar was established by serological test. The death rate was 8%.

A 3-year-old boy presented with recurrent strokes and pallor. Hematological investigations revealed severe iron deficiency anemia without thrombocytosis. The magnetic resonance angiogragraphy findings were suggestive of moyamoya syndrome. The association of moyamoya syndrome with severe iron deficiency anemia has not been reported earlier. The likely pathophysiological mechanisms are discussed.

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a rare, non-immunoglobulin E-mediated gastrointestinal food allergy primarily diagnosed in infancy, but has also been reported in older children and adults. Acute FPIES reactions typically present with delayed, repetitive vomiting, lethargy, and pallor within 1 to 4 hours of food ingestion. We report a 4-year-old girl presenting with sudden severe bilateral visual loss. Ophthalmological examination revealed optic disc pallor. Further neurological examination was normal. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suggested chiasmal optic neuritis, and further etiological investigations were negative. We review the literature on the incidence and underlying etiology of chiasmal optic neuritis in childhood.

A 4-year-old girl presented with severe pallor and intermittent passage of cola-coloured urine. Routine investigations were suggestive of auto-immune haemolytic anaemia. Red cell agglutination was observed in peripheral smear and patient's serum was positive for cold agglutinins. Thorough work-up ruled out secondary cold agglutinin disease. Patient was treated successfully with corticosteroids.

This study determined the effects of acute cypermethrin toxicity in the rat and its dose-response characteristics The intraperitoneal LD50 of cypermethrin from the study was 44.0 mg/kg body weight. The symptoms of toxicity were muscular weakness, swaying gait and respiratory distress; pallor and prostration occurred at higher doses and convulsions preceded death, apparently due to respiratory failure.

A visually asymptomatic 27-year-old man was found to have inferior altitudinal visual field defects binocularly. Ophthalmoscopy revealed superior segmental optic pallor with superior nerve fiber layer atrophy, nicely highlighted in red-free photographs. The patient's mother had insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Recognition of this entity is important for prognosis and for avoidance of unnecessary diagnostic studies.

Vestibular stimulation is able to produce neurovegetative effects, which are disagreable and annoying. By an overflow of the vestibular stimulus to the neurovegetative centres changes in blood pressure and pulse rate are more frequently induced than are subjective neurovegetative symptoms as nausea, pallor etc. There is some correlation between both manifestations, but also some independency in occurrence.

Three members of a family were affected by an autosomal dominant disorder comprising cerebellar ataxia, sensorineural deafness, myoclonus, and peripheral neuropathy. This is the second kindred with this syndrome reported to date. Necropsy of the proband showed loss of cells in the dentate nuclei, a reduced amount of cerebellar white matter, and pallor of the gracile tracts in the spinal cord.

Report on an 18-year-old man with a histologically confirmed intraorbital meningioma (transitional type) of the right optic nerve. The symptoms were slowly progressive loss of vision with central scotoma and pallor of the disk, without proptosis or disturbance of eye motility. Computer tomography performed preoperatively did not permit the differential diagnosis of glioma.
