Leishmaniases are a group of diseases caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania and transmitted mainly by the bite of sand fly vectors. Cat … fering presentations may require the use of different tests. Diagnosis of feline leishmaniosis with panniculitis caused by Leishmania infantum was made by cytology, histopathology, and PCR and Leishmania antibodies (IFA). The cat responded to therapy with meglumine antimoniate and allopurinol.

A 65-year-old man had intermittent abdominal pain for the previous 2 years. This pain suddenly became worse with a fever and elevated inflammatory markers. We took a while to diagnose the patient with mesenteric panniculitis (MP). Although imaging findings suggested MP, we needed to rule out other diseases. Choosing a treatment for the patient also took some time and we finally used glucocorticoid to cure the patient.

BACKGROUND: Panniculitides comprise a group of heterogeneous inflammatory diseases. Nevertheless, histopathological study along with clinicopathological correlation usually led to a specific diagnosis. In most textbooks, the first step in the diagnosis is to classify them as mostly septal or lobular depending on where the inflammatory infiltrate is located. The second step is deciding if vasculitis is present or not. Finally, the third step is further characterizing the inflammatory infiltrate. However, in addition to the algorithmic approach to panniculitis diagnosis, some subtle changes may …

A 58-year-old patient presented with a severe, episodic panniculitis of the upper legs. Necrosis of the fatty tissue and a suspected superinfection led to amputation of one leg. The panniculitis was caused by a hereditary deficiency of alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) due to a ZZ mutation of the AAT gene. Neutrophilic panniculitis is found in 0.1% of patients with the ZZ mutation and therefore is the rarest clinical manifestation of AAT deficiency. With the exception of mild COPD, the patient had no other typical clinical symptoms of AAT deficiency. Treatment with colchicum reduced the frequency and …

Panniculitis is an inflammatory disease of subcutaneous adipose tissue which is rarely associated with dermatomyositis. It can occur before, after or simultaneously with muscle damage. In most cases, the evolution of panniculitis and of other dermatomyositis affections is favorable with corticosteroids and/or immunosuppressants. We report the case of a 48 year-old patient who developed panniculitis lesions 2 months before having muscular signs. Skin involvement was resistant to corticosteroid treatment associated with immunosuppressants drugs. This led to the use of polyvalent immunoglobulin t…

Post-steroid panniculitis is an extremely rare phenomenon caused by inappropriate interruption of long-term systemic corticosteroid therapy. It usually occurs in children and is characterized by development of multiple subcutaneous nodules on the cheeks, arms, and trunk. Histologically it is a lobular type of panniculitis with characteristic needle-shaped clefts within adipocytes and numerous foreign-body giant cells. We present a case of post-steroid panniculitis occurring in a 50-year-old female after long-term administration of oral corticosteroids for Sjögren's syndrome accompanied by leuk…

The authors present a case of panniculitis in a newborn, a rare disease in the neonatal period discussing its causes and differential diagnosis, emphasizing a possible diagnosis of erythema nodosum.

A 38-year-old male with a past history of intravenous drug use, AIDS and Visceral Leishmaniasis in 2000, was hospitalized after presenting with fever, myalgias and arthralgias, fatigue, hepatosplenomegaly and oedema of the inferior limbs. On the tenth day of admission, the patient developed painful subcutaneous nodules of the thighs and a Dermatology consultation was requested. A clinical and histological diagnosis of Leishmania Panniculitis was made, in the setting of Visceral Leishmaniasis recurrence. Leishmania Panniculitis is rarely found simultaneously with Visceral Leishmaniasis, and it …

Pancreatic panniculitis is a rare complication of carcinoma of the pancreas, most often accompanying the rare acinar cystadenocarcinoma. It presents with painful erythematous subcutaneous nodules typically located on the leg. We present a case of a 79-year-old man with neuroendocrine carcinoma of the pancreas and liver metastasis, who developed painful subcutaneous nodules on his shins. Laboratory values included a raised lipase level with normal amylase level and peripheral eosinophilia. The patient was treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, dexamethasone and antibiotics, with res…
