Modulation and rehabilitation of spatial neglect by sensory stimulation.

After unilateral cortical or subcortical, often parieto-temporal lesions, patients exhibit a marked neglect of their contralateral space and/or body side. These patients are severely disabled in all daily activities, have a poor rehabilitation outcome and therefore require professional treatment. Unfortunately, effective treatments for neglect are just in the process of development. The present chapter reviews three aspects related to the rehabilitation of neglect. The first part summarizes findings about spontaneous recovery in patients and experimental animals with neglect. The second part d

[Polymodal sensory input in command neurons of snails].

Putative command neurones of snail's escape behaviour reacted with excitatory postsynaptic potentials and spikes to tactile, vestibular, light-off and thermal stimuli evoking behavioural escape reactions. Presented data confirm the command function of identified neurones. No monosynaptic connections have been revealed between intracellularly recorded primary cells of the statocyst and command neurones, but it has been shown that command neurones reacted to strong stimulation of the acoustic nerve. Presence of second-order sensory neurones in the vestibular pathway was assumed.

Recovery from optic neuritis is associated with a change in the distribution of cerebral response to visual stimulation: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

OBJECTIVES: Recovery to normal or near normal visual acuity is usual after acute demyelinating optic neuritis, despite the frequent persistence of conduction abnormalities as evidenced by the visual evoked potential (VEP). This raises the possibility that cortical adaptation to a persistently abnormal input contributes to the recovery process. The objective of this study was to investigate the pattern of cerebral response to a simple visual stimulus in recovered patients in comparison to normal subjects. METHODS: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to study the brain activat

Behavioural phase change in the Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera, is triggered by tactile stimulation of the antennae.

Density-dependent phase polyphenism is a defining characteristic of the paraphyletic group of acridid grasshoppers known as locusts. The cues and mechanisms associated with crowding that induce behavioural gregarization are best understood in the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, and involve a combination of sensory inputs from the head (visual and olfactory) and mechanostimulation of the hind legs, acting via a transient increase in serotonin in the thoracic ganglia. Since behavioural gregarization has apparently arisen independently multiple times within the Acrididae, the important ques

The characteristics of the nogo-N140 component in somatosensory go/nogo tasks.

Nogo-related brain potentials may not be dependent on sensory modalities but reflect common neural activities specific to the inhibitory process. Recent studies reported that nogo potentials were elicited by not only visual and auditory but also somatosensory stimulation. However, the characteristics of this nogo potential evoked by somatosensory stimulation have been unclear because of the small number of reports. In the present study, therefore, to determine the characteristics of this potential, the effects of stimulus site and response hand were investigated. Electrical stimulation was del

Visual pattern adaptation in subjects with photoparoxysmal EEG response: evidence for increased visual cortical excitability.

PURPOSE: Photosensitivity, or photoparoxysmal response (PPR), is an abnormal EEG reaction to intermittent photic stimulation (IPS), consisting of spikes, spike-waves, and intermittent slow waves. Depending on the spread of the abnormal activity, PPR subgroups have been defined as having either propagating PPR or localized, occipital spikes (OS) only. Recent research suggests an enhanced excitability in the occipital cortex may underlie this reaction during IPS, but it remains unclear whether changes in excitability affect the function of the occipital cortex to other, less provocative visual s…

An artifact-robust framework for measuring tES effects during stimulation.

Objective.Transcranial electric stimulation (tES) is a promising technique to non-invasively modulate human brain activity. However, stimulation artifacts in EEG and MEG recordings severely hinder the study of its online effects.Approach.Here, we introduce a new approach to account for these artifacts. The approach rests on two key ideas. First, we focus on interactions of tES with intrinsic brain activity, which are absent for tES artifacts. Second, rather than removing artifacts, we compare composite signals that share similar artifacts but potentially differ in the interaction of tES with i

Optimizing Affective Experience in Individualized Exercise: The Roles of Audiovisual Stimuli, Exercise Intensity, and Intensity Preference.

In this multi-study investigation, we examined the effects of audiovisual stimuli, exercise intensity, and intensity preference on modulating affective valence during acute exercise. We also investigated physical activity (PA) following a 4-week audiovisual-assisted exercise program among physically inactive adults. In Study 1, participants were randomized into audiovisual or control conditions and completed 20 min of moderate-intensity treadmill running. Affective valence was assessed throughout the exercise. In Study 2, participants with high or low preferences for high-intensity exercise co

High-Fidelity Reproduction of Visual Signals by Electrical Stimulation in the Central Primate Retina.

Electrical stimulation of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) with electronic implants provides rudimentary artificial vision to people blinded by retinal degeneration. However, current devices stimulate indiscriminately and therefore cannot reproduce the intricate neural code of the retina. Recent work has demonstrated more precise activation of RGCs using focal electrical stimulation with multielectrode arrays in the peripheral macaque retina, but it is unclear how effective this can be in the central retina, which is required for high-resolution vision. This work probes the neural code and effect

Attentional modulations of audiovisual interactions in apparent motion: Temporal ventriloquism effects on perceived visual speed.

The timing of brief stationary sounds has been shown to alter different aspects of visual motion, such as speed estimation. These effects of auditory timing have been explained by temporal ventriloquism and auditory dominance over visual information in the temporal domain. Although previous studies provide unprecedented evidence for the multisensory nature of speed estimation, how attention is involved in these audiovisual interactions remains unclear. Here, we aimed to understand the effects of spatial attention on these audiovisual interactions in time. We utilized a set of audiovisual stimu

Using visual speech at the cocktail-party: CNV evidence for early speech extraction in younger and older adults.

The comprehension of spoken language benefits from visual speech information. One reason for this is the temporal lead of mouth and lip movements over the onset of acoustic speech utterance. Here, we investigated EEG event-related potentials preceding acoustic speech, focusing on a fronto-central contingent negative variation (CNV) prior to the onset of acoustic speech. We explored influences of expectation and visual speech content as well as age-related differences. In a multi-talker two-alternative speech discrimination task, younger and older subjects responded to short words presented sim

Optoacoustically induced auditory brainstem responses in the mouse model enhanced through an absorbing film.

SIGNIFICANCE: Optoacoustic stimulation offers an alternative stimulation strategy for the hearing organ. To serve as the base for a novel auditory prosthesis, the optoacoustic stimulation must be biocompatible and energy-saving. AIM: Enhancing the efficiency of optoacoustic stimulation while reducing the energy input in a suited animal model. APPROACH: Optoacoustically induced auditory brainstem responses (oABRs) were recorded after the pulsed laser irradiation of the tympanic membrane (TM) in mice. The results were compared with the ABRs induced through acoustic click stimulation. In additi

Evidence for a visual bias when recalling complex narratives.

Although it is understood that episodic memories of everyday events involve encoding a wide array of perceptual and non-perceptual information, it is unclear how these distinct types of information are recalled. To address this knowledge gap, we examine how perceptual (visual versus auditory) and non-perceptual details described within a narrative, a proxy for everyday event memories, were retrieved. Based on previous work indicating a bias for visual content, we hypothesized that participants would be most accurate at recalling visually described details and would tend to falsely recall non-v

Cross-Sensory Stimuli Modulate Reactions to Aversive Sounds.

We propose that cross-sensory stimuli presenting a positive attributable source of an aversive sound can modulate negative reactions to the sound. In Experiment 1, participants rated original video sources (OVS) of eight aversive sounds (e.g., nails scratching a chalkboard) as more aversive than eight positive attributable video sources (PAVS) of those same sounds (e.g., someone playing a flute) when these videos were presented silently. In Experiment 2, new participants were presented with those eight aversive sounds in three blocks. In Blocks 1 and 3, the sounds were presented alone; in Bloc

Cognitive neuroscience can support public health approaches to minimise the harm of 'losses disguised as wins' in multiline slot machines.

Video slot machines are associated with both accelerated transition into problematic forms of gambling, as well as psychosocial harm above and beyond other forms of gambling. A growing body of evidence is uncovering how key design features of multiline slot machines produce an inflated experience of reward, despite the fact that these features offer no overall financial benefit to the player. A pernicious example of this are 'losses disguised as wins' (LDWs), which occur when simultaneous bets placed on multiple lines result in a winning combination that returns an amount greater than zero, bu

Desynchronization of brain rhythms with soft phase-resetting techniques.

Composite stimulation techniques are presented here which are based on a soft (i.e., slow and mild) reset. They effectively desynchronize a cluster of globally coupled phase oscillators in the presence of noise. A composite stimulus contains two qualitatively different stimuli. The first stimulus is either a periodic pulse train or a smooth, sinusoidal periodic stimulus with an entraining frequency close to the cluster's natural frequency. In the course of several periods of the entrainment, the cluster's dynamics is reset (restarted), independently of its initial dynamic state. The second sti

Classification of preganglionic neurones projecting into the cat cervical sympathetic trunk.

1. The spontaneous and reflex activity patterns of 167 single preganglionic axons dissected from the cervical sympathetic trunk were examined in chloralose-anaesthetized cats. Each neurone was classified into one of four major groups, on the basis of three principal criteria: the presence or absence of significant cardiac rhythmicity of the activity, the response to noxious stimulation of the skin, and the coupling of its activity to central inspiratory drive (phrenic nerve activity). Most neurones were also subjected to additional tests, which included carotid chemoreceptor stimulation, nasop

Different modality-specific mechanisms mediate serial dependence effects in visual and auditory perception.

BACKGROUND: Perceptual history plays an important role in sensory processing and decision making, shaping how we perceive and judge external objects and events. Indeed, past stimuli can bias what we are currently seeing in an attractive fashion, making a current stimulus appear more similar to a preceding one than it actually is. Such attractive "serial dependence" effects concern virtually every aspect of perception, suggesting that they may reflect a fundamental principle of brain processing. However, it is unclear whether the ubiquitous nature of serial dependence is due to an underlying ce

Mouse frontal cortex mediates additive multisensory decisions.

The brain can combine auditory and visual information to localize objects. However, the cortical substrates underlying audiovisual integration remain uncertain. Here, we show that mouse frontal cortex combines auditory and visual evidence; that this combination is additive, mirroring behavior; and that it evolves with learning. We trained mice in an audiovisual localization task. Inactivating frontal cortex impaired responses to either sensory modality, while inactivating visual or parietal cortex affected only visual stimuli. Recordings from >14,000 neurons indicated that after task learning,

Audiovisual multisensory integration in individuals with reading and language impairments: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Differences in sensory function have been documented for a number of neurodevelopmental conditions, including reading and language impairments. Prior studies have measured audiovisual multisensory integration (i.e., the ability to combine inputs from the auditory and visual modalities) in these populations. The present study sought to systematically review and quantitatively synthesize the extant literature on audiovisual multisensory integration in individuals with reading and language impairments. A comprehensive search strategy yielded 56 reports, of which 38 were used to extract 109 group
