BACKGROUND: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a clouding of the posterior part of the lens capsule, a skin-like transparent structure, which surrounds the crystalline lens in the human eye. PCO is the most common postoperative complication following modern cataract surgery with implantation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL). The main symptoms of PCO are a decrease in visual acuity, 'cloudy', blurred vision and reduced contrast sensitivity. PCO is treated with a neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser to create a small opening in the opaque capsule and regain a clear central visual axis

Reverse optic capture (ROC) is a surgical technique in which the optic of an intraocular lens (IOL) is positioned anterior to the anterior capsulotomy opening, while the haptics remain within the capsular bag. Described originally as a method to secure fixation in cases of posterior capsular rupture, ROC has since evolved as a surgical maneuver to address fixation of an IOL in the setting of a not-intact posterior capsule, toric IOL rotation, treatment of negative dysphotopsia, and correction of unanticipated postoperative hyperopia. This review highlights the development, indications, and out

It has been s … ients including 4 high myopia, 4 ocular contusion, and 2 who experienced IOL dislocation during the posterior capsulotomy were included in this study. Coexistence of IOL dislocation and vitreoretinal abnormalities occurred in patients with high myopia, ocular contusion, and capsulotomy. IOL dislocation happened in the vitreoretinal surgery in patients with high myopia …

PURPOSE: To study the clinicopathological findings of Persistent Fetal Vasculature (PFV) in patients with congenital cataract and PFV.
METHODS: Six eyes with anterior or combined PFV with cataract underwent phacoaspiration with primary posterior capsulotomy with anterior vitrectomy with intraocular lens implantation followed by histopathological evaluation of the PFV stalk and membrane.
RESULTS: Four and two patients had combined and anterior PFV respectively. There was no postoperative hyphema, vitreous haemorrhage, glaucoma or retinal detachment in six months. Haematoxylin and eosin staini…

Methylcellulose 1% was used in the anterior chamber to facilitate posterior chamber lens implantation at the time of extracapsular cataract extraction. In parallel series with similar preoperative endothelial cell counts, 70 eyes implanted under methylcellulose had a mean central endothelial cell loss of 8 +/- 5.3% at 8 to 12 weeks postoperative, whereas 63 eyes implanted under an air bubble lost a mean 25.3 +/- 14.6% (P less than 0.001). No differences in postoperative visual acuity, intraocular pressure, or inflammation were noted. A YAG laser preoperative anterior capsulotomy was used in al

AIM: To conduct a Meta-analysis pooling randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to compare hydrophobic with hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses in terms of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) development.
METHODS: Electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were queried from their starting till January 2020. RCTs investigating the impact of hydrophobic versus hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses on PCO were considered eligible in this study. The pooled effect estimates were calculated using the random-effects model.
RESULTS: Thirteen RCTs comprising of 939 pati

PURPOSE: To estimate the incidence and causes of pseudophakic retinal detachment after cataract surgery by phacoemulsification.
PATIENTS: 105 patients (51 females, 54 males, age: 18 -81 yrs) treated because of pseudophkic retinal detachment at the Department of Ophthalmology, Szczecin, between 2000 and 2004.
METHOD: Cataract surgery by phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implanation was performed in 105 eyes. Posterior chamber intraocular lenses were implanted in 102 eyes and anterior chamber intraocular lenses in 3 eyes.
RESULTS: During four years of follow-up, pseudophakic retinal de

OBJECTIVES: To determine the curative effect and complications of 23G vitrectomy via corneal approach for the treatment of pediatric cataract.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed anterior circular capsulotomy, lentectomy and aspiration, posterior circular capsulotomy, and anterior vitrectomy via corneal approach in 40 eyes from 25 children with congenital cataract. In patients aged > 2 years, foldable intraocular lens (IOL) was implanted and frame glasses were prescribed at younger age. The intraoperative/postoperative complications, comfort level, and inflammatory reaction after surgery were

Background Cataract is the leading cause of blindness globally, particularly in India. Despite advancements in surgical techniques, postoperative complications remain common, with posterior capsular opacification (PCO) being the most frequent issue. Although neodymium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy is recommended for managing PCO, it is associated with various side effects. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy on intraocular pressure (IOP), visual acuity, anterior chamber depth (ACD), macular thickness, and corneal endothelium in Indian

This study compares the incidence of significant posterior capsular opacification in the 12 months following surgery in patients who received a sulcus-fixated silicone lens, a bag-fixated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) lens, or a bag-fixated silicone lens. All procedures were performed by the same surgeon using the same technique. The incidence of capsulotomy was 16.5% with sulcus-fixated silicone lenses, 7.9% with PMMA lenses, and 4.8% with bag-fixated silicone lenses. This confirms the impression that earlier opacification occurs with sulcus-fixated silicone lenses, but the low incidence o

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence and related factors of retinal detachment (RD) after phacoemulsification cataract extraction and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in an unselected patient group.
METHODS: This retrospective review was comprised of 10 076 cataract patients (13 625 eyes) who had phacoemulsification cataract extraction and IOL implantation from December 1, 1998 to September 30, 2008. The patients were of different ages, gender, left or right eye and different type of cataracts. The incidence of postoperative RD was assessed and the relative risk factors were estimated u

AIMS: To assess the long term results of intraocular lens (IOL) implantation for traumatic cataract in young children in a developing country.
METHODS: Prospective hospital based study of 52 children (age 2-10 years) undergoing unilateral cataract extraction and IOL insertion for traumatic cataract performed by a single surgeon in south India. Children were reviewed regularly and followed up initially for 3 years.
RESULTS: There were no serious operative complications. Clinically significant posterior capsule opacification was almost universal (92%) and YAG capsulotomy or membranectomy was p

PURPOSE: To describe the diagnosis and management of a patient with rupture of the posterior capsule (PC) following blunt trauma to the left eye.
OBSERVATION: 68 year-old man presented with complaints of left eye pain, blurry vision and photophobia after getting hit in the left eye with a baseball. He was found to have a posterior capsule rupture, as well as mydriasis and zonular dialysis without formation of intumescent traumatic cataract. Femtosecond laser associated cataract surgery (FLACS) was performed to facilitate creation of an anterior capsulotomy and segmentation of the nucleus with

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the incidence, features and related factors of posterior capsular rupture (PCR) in extracapsular cataract extraction, the main intraoperative complication impairing the procedure of intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.
METHODS: The PCR including zonular break and vitreous loss was recorded according to the stage of operative procedure in 757 eyes with senile cataract (the average age was 67.3 +/- 8.3 years).
RESULTS: There were 51 eyes (6.7%) with PCR and 42 eyes (5.5%) of them accompanied with vitreous loss. The PCR in 17 eyes (33.3%) occurred during manual expression
