BACKGROUND: With the increasing application of fenestrated and physician-modified endografting for aneurysm repair, there is increasing concern about the accuracy of vessel position measurements based on computed tomography scans. Inaccuracies in measurements may result in a "window-shutter" or "eclipsing" phenomenon whereby the fenestration may not overlie the vessel ostium completely. We hypothesized that vessel position measurements from reconstructed imaging do not represent the true vessel position as obtained from a three-dimensional (3D) printed physical model of the visceral aortic seg

INTRODUCTION: Often used interchangeably with 'additive manufacturing,' 3D printing involves creating a three-dimensional (3D) object from a digital model, by building successive layers of raw material. By adding material to only where it is needed, 3D printing has the potential to save considerable resources compared to 'subtractive manufacturing' which involves removing the excessive materials to make the necessary part. In addition to cost-savings, 3D printing offers flexibility in design and the possibility of personalizing a 3D-printed object to a patient's anatomy. Some of the potential

Tissue engineering is an emerging field within biomedicine, related to developing functional substitutes for damaged tissues or organs. Despite significant advancements, the development of effective engineering tissue constructs remains challenging, particularly when replicating elastic stretchability, which plays a critical role in many tissues. Therefore, the development of tough, elastomeric scaffolds that mimic the complex elasticity of native tissues, such as the myocardium, heart valves, and blood vessels, is of particular interest. This study aims to evaluate a flexible printable materi

Cardiac calcification is common in adults with congenital heart disease, typically affecting surgical sites and prosthetic material. Understanding the precise location and degree of calcification is important during the decision-making process prior to possible intervention but can be difficult to determine in different imaging modalities. Advances in three-dimensional (3D) modeling and printing have made it possible to distinguish different tissue types and accurately display them in different colors on printed models. We present two adult congenital heart disease patients where advanced 3D p

The nerve block is a safe and effective method to theat trigeminal neuralgia (TN). In terms of the V2 trigeminal neuralgia, the most difficult procedure in nerve block is accurate and fast greater palatine foramen (GPF) insertion. In this study, we developed a new technique using a personalised digital tooth-supported guide plate to increase insertion accuracy and success rates and reduce the pain of patients during injection. A total of 18 patients with TN (11 female and 7 male) were enrolled and treated between September 2020 and June 2022. Before injection, the guide plate was designed via

Localization of defect sites is a major challenge for surgical repair of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks. Here, we report a case in which we applied a 3-dimensional (3D) printed model to accurately identify the defect sites and facilitate the successful repair of a cranial CSF leak. A 37-year-old female patient diagnosed with recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma suffered CSF rhinorrhea and severe bacterial meningitis. Lumbar drainage and antibiotic administration failed to control the condition. In addition to high resolution computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, we applied a 3D pr

The feasibility of the three-dimensional (3D) cartilage regeneration technology based on the "steel (framework)-reinforced concrete (engineered cartilage gel, ECG)" concept has been verified in large animals using a decalcified bone matrix (DBM) as the framework. However, the instability of the source, large sample variation, and lack of control over the 3D shape of DBM have greatly hindered clinical translation of this technology. To optimize cartilage regeneration using the ECG-framework model, the current study explores the feasibility of replacing the DBM framework with a 3D-printed polyca
