Specific absorption rate in rats exposed to 2,450-MHz microwaves under seven exposure conditions.

Both positive and negative biological effects of microwaves on drug actions in rats exposed to 1-mW/cm2, 2,450-MHz microwaves have been reported by several investigators. We conducted dosimetry studies for seven different exposure conditions to determine whether these different results could be due to the rats having been exposed differently. They included anterior and posterior exposures in a circular waveguide, near field, far field with E- or H-field parallel to the long axis of the body and dorsal exposure in a miniature anechoic chamber with E- or H-field parallel to the long axis of the

Behavior of lactating dairy cows during total confinement.

Daytime activity of four lactating Holstein cows housed in total confinement in stanchion stalls for about 14 wk was observed continuously, and activities such as eating, drinking, resting, ruminating, and socializing were recorded. Observations were by closed-circuit television and a switch panel connected to an event recorder. During the 15 h of daytime, the cows spent an average of 45% of the time lying, 26% eating, 22% ruminating, 1% drinking, and 2% socializing. Most eating occurred during standing (98.4%) while most rumination occurred during lying (59%). The distribution of these activi

Coercion in intensive care, an insufficiently explored issue-a scoping review of qualitative narratives of patient's experiences.

PURPOSE: The use of coercion, in a clinical context as imposing a measure against a patient's opposition or declared will, can occur in various forms in intensive care units (ICU). One prime example of a formal coercive measure in the ICU is the use of restraints, which are applied for patients' own safety. Through a database search, we sought to evaluate patient experiences related to coercive measures. RESULTS: For this scoping review, clinical databases were searched for qualitative studies. A total of nine were identified that fulfilled the inclusion and the CASP criteria. Common themes e

Biomechanical study of C2 (Axis) fracture: effect of restraint.

INTRODUCTION: In human, the cervical spine region is very susceptible to impact injury. The complex structures of C1 and C2 serve to transmit the weight of the cranium to the greatly similar structural cervical spine from C3 caudally. Application of sudden disruption forces will detach the junction of the cervico-cranium with the pars interarticularis of the neural arch of C2 from the lower cervical spine by fracturing, as in a "hangman's fracture". Severe falls or blows to the head from heavy objects will cause the fracture of the odontoid process of C2. Many biomechanical studies were conduc

Clinical Complexity and Use of Antipsychotics and Restraints in Long-Term Care Residents with Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and/or Parkinsonism are affected by a complex burden of comorbidity. Many ultimately require institutional care, where they may be subject to the application of physical restraints or the prescription of antipsychotic medications, making them more vulnerable to adverse outcomes. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this paper are to: 1) describe the clinical complexity of older institutionalized persons with PD; and 2) examine patterns and predictors of restraint use and prescription of antipsychotics in this population. METHODS: Population-based c

Eating Behavior Traits, Weight Loss Attempts, and Vertebral Dimensions Among the General Northern Finnish Population.

STUDY DESIGN: A population-based birth cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the associations of eating behavior traits and weight loss attempts with vertebral size among the general Northern Finnish population. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Vertebral fragility fractures are a typical manifestation of osteoporosis, and small vertebral dimensions are a well-established risk factor for vertebral fracturing. Previous studies have associated cognitive eating restraint and diet-induced weight loss with deteriorated bone quality at various skeletal sites, but data on vertebral geometry are lacking.

"He's probably overdosed on something!".

A 16 year old boy presented with extreme violent behaviour requiring physical restraint. Acute drug intoxication was mooted as a probable cause of his condition. The case illustrates that the causes of altered consciousness and aggressive behaviour are many and varied and that life-threatening conditions need to be considered and excluded in cases of this nature.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of interventions designed to prevent or stop elder maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: elder maltreatment is a major risk for older adults' mental health, quality of life, health, institutionalisation and even mortality. OBJECTIVES: to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of interventions designed to prevent or stop elder abuse. METHODS: Studies that were posted between January 2000 and December 2014, written in English, specifically designed to prevent or stop elder maltreatment were included. RESULTS: overall, 24 studies (and four records reporting on the same participants) were kept for the systematic review and the meta-analysis. Studies were broadly

A longitudinal analysis of the prevalence of restrictive interventions involving women with mental health conditions, learning disabilities or autism in mental health services in England.

INTRODUCTION: Restrictive interventions, including physical restraint, seclusion, chemical restraint, and segregation, continue to be used within mental health services, despite sustained policy efforts to promote least-restrictive and trauma-informed care. However, little is known about national trends affecting women, for whom restrictive interventions often carry heightened risks of re-traumatisation and stigma. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal secondary analysis of publicly available administrative data from the Mental Health Bulletin covering NHS-funded mental health services in Engl

Agitation and restlessness after closed head injury: a prospective study of 100 consecutive admissions.

Agitation and restlessness are two of the most striking and problematic behaviors for patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), their caregivers, and their families. These behaviors are often treated with physical and chemical restraints which have potentially harmful side effects. There are, however, few prospective studies which clearly define agitation and restlessness in a representative sample of TBI patients. Subjects for this study were 100 consecutive patients with traumatic, closed head injury (CHI) admitted to a regional Level I Trauma Center with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of less

Nursing care for people with borderline personality disorder in the Freirean perspective.

OBJECTIVE: To understand, from the ethical perspective of Freire's, the nursing care for people with borderline personality disorder. METHODS: This is a qualitative research whose production of information was conducted from May to June 2016 in two psychiatric admission units. We have interviewed seven nurses and eight nursing technicians. The information was analyzed in the light of Paulo Freire's referential framework. RESULTS: The following categories have come up: 1) Welcoming and therapeutic relationship as instruments to strengthen linkage; and 2) Drug therapy and restraint: interface

Evaluating sensory conflict and postural instability. Theories of motion sickness.

Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the sensory conflict and the postural instability theories of motion sickness. The central hypothesis of sensory conflict theory is that motion sickness is caused by conflict between the current pattern of sensory inputs about self-movement and the pattern that is expected on the basis of previous experience. A subsidiary hypothesis is that the degree of motion sickness is proportional to the magnitude of sensory conflict. The central hypothesis of postural instability theory is that motion sickness is caused by loss of postural control. A subsidiar

CRF-deficient mice respond like wild-type mice to hypophagic stimuli.

Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) has been implicated in physiological processes associated with stress, including changes in feeding behavior. Intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of CRF and urocortin have been shown to depress feeding, and antagonism of CRF receptors has been reported to attenuate hypophagic responses to many treatments, suggesting that brain CRF may mediate these responses. We have now studied feeding behavior of mice lacking the CRF gene (CRFko), comparing them to wild-type (CRFwt) mice. Feeding was assessed in nondeprived mice by measuring the intake of sweeten

Violent incidents in a secure service for individuals with learning disabilities: Incident types, circumstances and staff responses.

BACKGROUND: The issue of violence in secure services has long been recognized both in the UK and worldwide. However, there is currently scarce literature available about violence within learning disability (LD) secure settings. METHODS: Secondary data analysis was conducted on violent incidents, using information routinely collected by the staff over a 1-year period. RESULTS: Physical assaults were the most frequent type of incident, and the distribution in terms of days or months was homogenous and incidents were concentrated in the corridors, lounges and dining rooms of secure facilities.

Venous Thromboembolism in Eating Disorders: A Retrospective Observational Study.

Eating disorders (EDs) are associated with a high mortality rate. Patients with EDs often experience severe dehydration due to food restriction and/or vomiting. Severely underweight patients are often prescribed bed rest during inpatient care to reduce their energy consumption, and they may thus develop multiple risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE). We compared the clinical features of ED inpatients with VTE to those of ED inpatients without VTE. Seventy-one inpatients with ED were treated at Okayama University Hospital's psychiatric ward in 2016-2020; five were experienced a VTE. Com

Nuclei-and condition-specific responses to pain in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis.

The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST) is a basal forebrain structure considered to be part of a cortico-striato-pallidal system that coordinates autonomic, neuroendocrine and behavioural physiological responses. Recent evidence suggests that the BST plays a role in the emotional aspect of pain. The objective of the present study was to further understand the neurophysiological bases underlying the involvement of the BST in the pain experience, in both acute and chronic pain conditions. Using c-Fos as an indicator of neuronal activation, the results demonstrated that a single toe-pinch

The impact of multidisciplinary collaborative bundled care on analgesia and sedation in ICU patients with endotracheal intubation.

BACKGROUND: Effective analgesia and sedation management play a crucial role in reducing the intensity of coughing in patients with endotracheal intubation and improving clinical outcomes. However, current approaches are predominantly singular and lack comprehensive management strategies based on multidisciplinary collaboration. This study aims to evaluate the impact of multidisciplinary collaborative bundled care on analgesia and sedation in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with endotracheal intubation, providing evidence to inform clinical practice. METHODS: Seventy ICU patients were enrol
