Post-unilateral labyrinthectomy compensation was compared between squirrel monkeys; one group with the pre-placement of posterior vermectomy next group with uvulonodulectomy, and the other group without any vermic lesions. We report here a family with three pathologically confirmed cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in three siblings and with transmission of one case to the squirrel monkey. This family, originating from the South-East of England, settled in France in 1870. Eight members of the family, distributed in three generations, were affected by the disease at the same age (about 50), with similar symptoms and length of evolution. As kappa agonists have been proposed as treatments for cocaine abuse, the cardiovascular effects of the kappa opioid receptor agonists ethylketocyclazocine (EKC) and enadoline were investigated in conscious squirrel monkeys. Both EKC and enadoline increased heart rate with little effect on blood pressure. This effect appeared to be specific for kappa receptors as the mu opioid agonist morphine did not mimic the effects of the kappa agonists. Bolivian squirrel monkeys (BoSMs), which are animal models for Gilbert's syndrome, have 40% less hepatic bilirubin UDP-glucuronyltransferase (BR-UPPG-T) activity than Brazilian squirrel monkeys (BrSMs). 2. The developing use of in vitro fertilization (IVF) as a human clinical procedure has prompted the exploitation of nonhuman primates to assess the chromosomal and biochemical normality of embryos produced by IVF.
