There have been few reports of dermatomyositis causing ascites. Here we report a case of a 63-year-old man complaining of general fatigue and gastromegaly. Abdominal examination revealed distension without tenderness. Serum myogenic enzyme was elevated. Electromyographic investigation indicated low amplitude signs, which were compatible with muscle disorder. Abdominal paracentesis on the fifth day yielded 2,500 ml clear, serous fluid. Immunoglobulins and nonspecific defence factors (complement, properdin, lysozyme) were studied over time in 194 children suffering from diabetes mellitus. In 145 children, diabetes mellitus was associated with chronic tonsillitis. Resistance in 49 children was examined depending on the phase of diabetes mellitus. The data obtained indicate that diabetes mellitus is marked by imbalance of nonspecific defence factors and humoral immunity. These changes are obviously related to the disease gravity, phasic nature of the process, diabetes mellitus standing, and the presence of concomitant diseases.

A cross-sectional survey of the drinking habits of 877 mentally handicapped in-patients revealed 31 patients (prevalence 3.5%) who, in the opinion of nurses, drank five litres or more daily. Low urine specific gravity was a less useful indicator of polydipsia. Polydipsia appeared to be significantly associated with a borderline level of handicap and with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, autism or severe personality/behaviour disorder. We present a patient with schizophrenia who developed dexmedetomidine-induced polyuria after superficial parotidectomy. Two hours after starting the dexmedetomidine infusion, urine output increased from a baseline rate of 80 mL/h to a 7-hour average rate of 400 mL/h (range, 280-560 mL/h), the serum sodium concentration increased from 132 to 139 mEq/L, and urine-specific gravity was 1.006. OBJECTIVE: To assess differences in kidney function between Down syndrome (DS) individuals and a control group related to aging.
METHODS: Creatinine (Cr) and specific gravity (SG) were assessed by spectrophotometric and refractometric assays in urine samples of 103 individuals with DS and 82 age-matched controls.
RESULTS: Significantly lower levels of Cr and SG were found in DS after puberty. Significant correlations were found between SG and age as well as between Cr and SG in DS and controls (p ≤ 0.05).

A 40-year-old achondroplastic patient underwent posterior spinal fusion under general endotracheal anesthesia. Anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane, and sufentanil, dexmedetomidine, and lidocaine infusions. Urine output increased from 150 mL/hr to 950 mL/hr the fourth hour. To determine whether urinalysis can aid the diagnosis of equine grass sickness, samples of urine from 15 horses with acute grass sickness, eight horses with subacute grass sickness, 17 co-grazing horses and 17 stabled control horses were analysed.
