Clinical utilization of microperimetry in ophthalmic surgery: A narrative review.

Microperimetry is an emerging technology that provides concurrent analysis of retinal structure and function by combining retinal sensitivity and fixation analysis with fundus imaging. We summarize the substantial evidence validating the evolving role of microperimetry as an adjunctive assessment of visual function in the perioperative setting. We show that microperimetry provides useful complementary information to other established imaging and functional modalities in the perioperative setting for a wide range of vitreoretinal surgical procedures, as well as in cataract and refractive surger

The influence of contact lenses with different optical designs on the binocular vision and visual behavior of young adults.

Theoretically, contact lenses change the accommodation and vergence demands of the eyes and directly or indirectly influence binocular vision. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of different optical designs of contact lenses on binocular vision and visual behavior among young adults. In this randomized, single-blinded experimental study, visual behavioral performance (VBP) and Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaires were used for preliminary screening. Nineteen myopic subjects aged 20-26 years (21.59 ± 1.40 years) participated in the study. Baseline values for subje

Evaluation of the presence of a central fusion lock effect on fixation disparity curve parameters in symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects.

Clinical relevance: Several parameters are likely to affect the magnitude of fixation disparity (FD) and FD curve characteristics. Presence of a central fusion lock may have an important effect on clinical testing of FD and interpretation of its results. Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate FD curve parameters using the modified near Mallett unit (with a central fusion lock) and the Sheedy disparometer (without a central fusion lock) in symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 147 patients with a mean age of 22.5 years who presented

Reading difficulties and the pediatric ophthalmologist.

Approximately 20% of children have dyslexia, a language-based reading disability. A variation in language processing in the brain leads to a deficit in phonological (auditory) processing, which leads to problems in learning to read, write, and spell. Myths continue to exist regarding dyslexia and vision, and although eye and vision problems may coexist with dyslexia, they are not more prevalent than in the general population. Rarely vision problems may make reading at near very difficult and may masquerade as a learning problem or attention deficit disorder/attention deficit hyperactivity diso

[Visually based reading disorders after brain damage. Standardised assessment and treatment with READ].

Visually based reading disorders are frequently encountered in patients with acquired brain damage. Homonymous visual field defects, impaired elementary visual capacities (acuity, contrast sensitivity, convergent fusion, ocular motor disorders), visual neglect or Balint-Holmes syndrome are the most frequent causes of such reading disorders. Reading is not only an important prerequisite for vocational and private life, but is also indispensable for subsequent cognitive abilities such as verbal working memory and long-term memory. Despite this importance no comprehensive system exists for the st

On using Vernier acuity to assess magnocellular sensitivity.

A recent study [Keri, S., & Benedek, G. (2009). Visual pathway deficit in female fragile x premutation carriers: A potential endophenotype. Brain and Cognition, 69, 291-295] has found Vernier acuity deficiencies together with contrast sensitivity defects consistent with a magnocellular deficit in female fragile x premutation carriers. This may appear to support the notion that Vernier acuity may serve as a test of magnocellular sensitivity. However, Vernier acuity deficiencies have been reported in other conditions (e.g., schizophrenia, amblyopia and cortical visual impairment) where there is

Binocular visual surface perception.

Binocular disparity, the differential angular separation between pairs of image points in the two eyes, is the well-recognized basis for binocular distance perception. Without denying disparity's role in perceiving depth, we describe two perceptual phenomena, which indicate that a wider view of binocular vision is warranted. First, we show that disparity can play a critical role in two-dimensional perception by determining whether separate image fragments should be grouped as part of a single surface or segregated as parts of separate surfaces. Second, we show that stereoscopic vision is not l

On the incidence of unilateral and bilateral colour blindness in heterozygous females.

In 303 mothers of colour-blind sons, both eyes were tested with pseudoisochromatic plates and with the anomaloscope. Two hundred thirty healthy normal and 56 colour-blind males served as controls. In good agreement with the expected proportion of homozygotes in our sample, 17 colour-blind mothers were detected. Eight others had difficulty reading pseudoisochromatic plates and were conspicuous at the anomaloscope. In these, both eyes were affected to a very similar, moderate degree. Monocular disturbances of colour vision were not observed in the entire series. Our data suggest that (1) in most

Evaluation of ocular safety: tirapazamine plus cisplatin in patients with metastatic melanomas.

Ninety-six patients with metastatic melanoma treated with two consecutive tirapazamine-cisplatin combination chemotherapy regimens were followed for signs of therapy-related ocular toxicity. Baseline and follow-up data were obtained such that each patient acted as his own control. A battery of vision-related tests was performed. These included: best corrected visual acuity, color vision, retinal fundus examination and electro-oculograms (EOG). A brief health-related quality of vision test was administered at each follow-up visit to detect and evaluate self-perceived changes in visual status. I

A sudden-stop vestibulovisual test for rapid assessment of motion sickness manifestations.

The test made use of a rotating chair mounted in a striped cylindrical enclosure, 4.6 m in diameter. The subject was exposed to the following motion profile: With eyes covered he was accelebrated at 15 degrees/s2 to clockwise volocity of 300 degrees/s and maintained at that velocity for 30 s. The chair was then decelerated to a stop within 1.5 s and maintained at rest for 30 s while physiological parameters and motion sickness symptoms were recorded. This procedure was repeated until a pre-selected motion sickness endpoint was reached or 20 stops had been made. If the endpoint was not reached,

Laparoscopic pyeloplasty: Initial experience with 3D vision laparoscopy and articulating shears.

INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic reconstructive surgery is associated with a steep learning curve related to the use of two-dimensional (2D) vision and rigid instruments. With the advent of robotic surgery, three-dimensional (3D) vision, and articulated instruments, this learning curve has been facilitated. We present a hybrid alternative to robotic surgery, using laparoscopy with 3D vision and articulated shears. OBJECTIVE: To compare outcomes of children undergoing pyeloplasty using 3D laparoscopy with articulated instruments with those undergoing the same surgery using standard laparoscopy with

A paradigm for characterizing motion misperception in people with typical vision and low vision.

PURPOSE: We aimed to develop a paradigm that can efficiently characterize motion percepts in people with low vision and compare their responses with well-known misperceptions made by people with typical vision when targets are hard to see. METHODS: We recruited a small cohort of individuals with reduced acuity and contrast sensitivity (n = 5) as well as a comparison cohort with typical vision (n = 5) to complete a psychophysical study. Study participants were asked to judge the motion direction of a tilted rhombus that was either high or low contrast. In a series of trials, the rhombus oscill

Vision through cataracts.

Contrast thresholds for a range of different spatial frequencies were compared with "acuity" tests for 10 subjects with uniocular senile cataract. The results indicate that the magnitude and extent of the intra-resolution limit abnormality vary dramatically in cataract subjects and that, for some subjects, vision is abnormal for objects of all sizes. This finding indicates that the present acuity evaluation of vision with cataracts is inadequate because, in some cases, it grossly overestimates the nature of the visual world of the cataract patient.

Different uses of chromatic signals in patients with congenital and acquired colour vision deficiencies.

Chromatic signals can be used to generate perceived colour and also to detect spatially structured objects defined only by chromatic differences. These two attributes have previously been investigated in dichromats and cerebral achromatopsic patients using a new colour vision test developed at City University that makes possible the isolation of pure chromatic signals (Barbur et al. Proc. R. Soc. London B 258, 327-334, 1994). We have investigated acquired colour vision changes in a 69-year-old patient, after conventional colour vision tests gave ambiguous results. His ability to detect an obje…

A rare case report of pseudomyopia after impacted teeth extraction under general anesthesia.

Ophthalmic complications after tooth extraction are rare but discomforting events. This paper reports the rare complications of a 20-year-old male patient who presented with transient blurring of vision after surgical extraction of several teeth under general anesthesia. Additional diagnostic tests were performed to discern the reason for the pseudomyopia. A literature review was carried out by searching for articles published from 1936 to 2019 using the keywords "dental," "ophthalmic," "complication," "blurring of vision," and "accommodation disturbance" in PubMed. Only six patients with deta

Screening for glaucoma: U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement.

DESCRIPTION: Update of the 2004 U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendation on screening for glaucoma. METHODS: The USPSTF reviewed evidence on the benefits and harms of screening for glaucoma and of medical and surgical treatment of early glaucoma. Beneficial outcomes of interest included improved vision-related quality of life and reduced progression of early asymptomatic glaucoma to vision-related impairment. The USPSTF also considered evidence on the accuracy of glaucoma screening tests. POPULATION: This recommendation applies to adults who do not have vision symptoms and
