Cross cultural adaptation of the English version of the IOF-QLQ to Polish, to assess the health-related quality-of-life of patients after a distal radius fracture.

BACKGROUND: A distal radius fracture (DRF) is a common injury that can cause significant pain and lead to a prolonged decrease in physical, emotional, and social functioning. In modern randomized clinical trials, assessing outcomes after a DRF, health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) is a "must-be" endpoint. Additionally, HRQoL assessments are essential in the clinical decision-making process. The aim of this study to cross-culturally adapt the International Osteoporosis Foundation Quality of Life Questionnaire (IOF QLQ) for patients with a DRF to Polish. METHODS: A standard forward-backward t

Lateral entry compared with medial and lateral entry pin fixation for completely displaced supracondylar humeral fractures in children. Surgical technique.

BACKGROUND: Closed reduction and percutaneous pin fixation is the treatment of choice for completely displaced (type-III) extension supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children, although controversy persists regarding the optimal pin-fixation technique. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of lateral entry pin fixation with that of medial and lateral entry pin fixation for the operative treatment of completely displaced extension supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children. METHODS: This prospective, randomized clinical trial had sufficient power to detect a 10%

Distal tibial fractures treated with hybrid external fixation.

Management of distal tibia fractures remains challenging. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether hybrid external fixation, as definite treatment, was associated with satisfactory results and low rate of complications. Between November 1999 and October 2006, 48 patients (33 men and 15 women) with a mean age of 45.6 years and a median ISS of 14.3 were admitted to our department with a distal tibia fracture and treated with the use of a hybrid external fixator. Eight patients had an open fracture. Mean follow-up was 14 months (range, 9-36 months). In 40 patients, radiographic evidence

A ten-year analysis of midfacial fractures.

INTRODUCTION: With respect to maxillofacial trauma a substantial part consists of midfacial fractures. The distribution of fracture sites seems to be influenced by the cause of the injury, geographic location, local behaviour and socioeconomic trends. This retrospective study presents an investigation of the aetiology and incidence of midfacial fractures in Amsterdam over a period of 10 years. RESULTS: The study population consisted of 278 patients, 200 males and 78 females, with a mean age of 39.3 (SD: ±16.0) years and a male-female ratio of 2.6:1. Most fractures were found in the age group

Masseter Sarcopenia and Mortality After Type II Odontoid Fractures in the Elderly: A 5-Year Follow-Up Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sarcopenia, defined as low muscle mass with reduced strength or function, is associated with poor outcomes in trauma patients. Head computed tomography scans routinely performed in elderly trauma patients allows for masseter sarcopenia measurement. Its association with mortality after Type II odontoid fractures has not been previously investigated. This study examines the relationship between masseter sarcopenia and mortality in elderly patients with Type II odontoid fractures. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients aged 50 years or older with a

The effects of screw length on stability of simulated osteoporotic distal radius fractures fixed with volar locking plates.

PURPOSE: Volar plating for distal radius fractures has caused extensor tendon ruptures resulting from dorsal screw prominence. This study was designed to determine the biomechanical impact of placing unicortical distal locking screws and pegs in an extra-articular fracture model. METHODS: We applied volar-locking distal radius plates to 30 osteoporotic distal radius models. We divided radiuses into 5 groups based on distal locking fixation: bicortical locked screws, 3 lengths of unicortical locked screws (abutting the dorsal cortex [full length], 75% length, and 50% length to dorsal cortex),

[Indications and results of kypho- and vertebroplasty].

The best currently available evidence based treatment reduces vertebral fracture risk but does not totally prevent osteoporotic and malignant follow-up fractures. Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are options of a causal treatment to reduce pain by internal stabilization of fractured vertebrae. The indication for these minimal invasive procedures requires an interdisciplinary discussion of the individual case to guarantee technical feasibility, to increase the likelihood that these procedures will indeed reduce pain and to embed these procedures into the long term therapeutic concept of every sin

[Operative treatment of proximal humeral fractures with helix wire].

BACKGROUND: Between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2002, a total of 50 patients with a dislocated or unstable fracture of the proximal humerus were treated surgically with a titanium helix wire introduced retrogradely into the medullary cavity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fracture classification showed 8 cases of a two-fragment fracture, 32 cases of a three-fragment fracture, and 10 cases of a so-called four-fragment fracture. A retrospective radiographic and medical review of all 50 patients showed postoperative complications in 24% of the cases; in 8 cases (16%) secondary loss of retention occurr

[Osteosynthesis under arthroscopic control of separated tibial plateau fractures. 26 case reports].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Arthroscopic treatment of tibial plateau fractures may reduce morbidity compared to open articular surgery. But bony fixation is necessarily percutaneous and minimal. The purpose of our study was not only to assess immediate results but also long term functional and anatomic results after arthroscopic treatment of tibial plateau fractures, with special reference to radiographical results. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-six patients (mean age 42 years, range 18 to 70 years, 17 men, 9 women) were arthroscopically treated for a fresh tibial plateau fracture. According to Scha

A Split from Traditional Orbital Compartment Syndrome Intervention: Case Report of Vision-saving Vertical Lid Split Procedure.

INTRODUCTION: Many emergency physicians will never perform a lateral canthotomy and cantholysis, and one-third of those who try will be unsuccessful at relieving the pressure that threatens permanent vision loss. This procedure is notoriously difficult and rare, but a recently proposed alternative-the vertical lid split-may be simpler and more effective. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 35-year-old woman with motor vehicle collision-related orbital trauma who presented to a community emergency department. Initially, she had intact vision and extraocular movements. Imaging showed a comminu

A shotgun-induced nonunion humeral fracture treated by Masquelet technique and arthrodesis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The Masquelet technique remains one of the procedures with low rates of failure and infection. The use of this technique in humeral defects is still rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old male patient with an open humeral comminuted fracture induced by shotgun injury was referred to our hospital. The Masquelet technique was chosen as the best option with a lower risk of infection and the lower expenses at this stage due to the second time of open reduction and internal fixation and bone graft failure, low patient compliance, and the increasing size of the defect d

[Bilateral posterior glenohumeral fracture-dislocation secondary to a seizure episode: the importance of early diagnosis. A case review].

INTRODUCTION: posterior glenohumeral fracture dislocation (PGHFD) is a rare injury. It may present secondary to a seizure, electrocution or due to direct trauma. It is usually missed, and late diagnosis is common which increases the rate of complications and sequalae. CASE REPORT: 52 year old male, transferred to a reference trauma center due to a tonic-clonic seizure and a right PGHFD. Upon admission radiographs are requested and right shoulder injury is confirmed. Additionally, a simple left posterior glenohumeral dislocation (that was missed in the initial assessment of the patient) is obs

Damage separation model: A replaceable particle method based on strain energy field.

We present a realistic model for simulating particle fragmentation in granular assemblies, the damage separation model (DSM), that addresses the limitations of previous methods by replacing the particle with smaller ones after fragmentation. The method is based on the calculation of the strain energy field inside the particle, and it solves the two major issues of the existing replaceable particle methods: the oversimplification of particle stress, and the unrealistic geometrical constraints needed in postbreakage replacements. Our model is formulated with three modules: (i) a boundary element

Special contoured pelvic brim reconstruction titanium plate combined with trans-plate buttress screws (quadrilateral screws) for acetabular fractures with quadrilateral plate involvement through the anterior ilioinguinal approach.

BACKGROUND: Managing complicated acetabular fractures involving the quadrilateral plate (QLP) can be challenging for surgeons, especially when complicated by comminution and osteoporosis. Traditional implants do not provide sufficient fixed strength or a proper match. The new-type pre-contoured infrapectineal buttress plates may have drawbacks, such as inaccurate fitting on the medial surface of QLP and an inability to apply reversed compression force to resist medial displacement of femoral head. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study is to introduce a novel technique that utilizes a sp

Three-dimensional suitability assessment of three types of osteochondral autograft for ulnar coronoid process reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Osteochondral autografts with use of the olecranon tip, lateral radial head, or proximal radial head have been employed for coronoid process reconstruction. However, it is unclear which autograft is most suitable for coronoid articular configuration. We assessed 3-dimensional articular facet suitability of 3 osteochondral autografts for coronoid process reconstruction. METHODS: We performed 3-dimensional computed tomography of 20 elbows to compare the articular facet configuration between the coronoid process and the ipsilateral olecranon tip, lateral radial head, and proximal rad

Surgical management of traumatic talus defects: A comprehensive review.

The talus is a critical bone in the foot, located between the tibia and calcaneus, playing a key role in weight-bearing and force transmission. It forms a stable structure with the tibia and fibula via the ankle joint and helps maintain foot flexibility with the calcaneus and navicular through the subtalar joint. Due to its cartilage-covered surface and lack of direct muscle attachment, its blood supply mainly depends on surrounding soft tissue. As a result, traumatic injuries can disrupt blood flow, leading to ischemic bone necrosis and significant impairment of foot function. Traumatic talus
