The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii by two serological techniques in sera of 364 stray dogs from Brazil by immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT, cut off point 1:16) and to the modified agglutination test (MAT, cut-off points 1:25 and 1:50). A total of 175/364 (48.07%) sera were positive by IFAT, and 108/364 (29.67%) and 85/364 (23.35%) were positive by MAT with cutoff points 1:25 and 1:50, respectively were positive by MAT. A new serological test, the gelatin particle agglutination test (GPAT), was used for the serodiagnosis of schistosomiasis mansoni. This technique showed the sensitivity (90.6%) and specificity (97.8%) close to those of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The GPAT can be easily and rapidly performed without specialized equipment, by using lyophilized antigen-coated gelatin particles. The test also seems to be useful for mass screening of Schistosoma infection in field conditions.

Fifty-two Trichosporon strains isolated from Gabonese female patients 15-60 years, were studied. The identity of these strains was established by two different methods: the method proposed by Guého et al. Two different kits for the detection of serum cryptococcal antigen in patients with pulmonary cryptococcosis were evaluated. Results obtained with the Culturette brand 10-Minute Group A Strep ID system were compared with culture results to measure the ability of this system to detect group A streptococci directly from more than 800 throat swabs. Our study showed a sensitivity of 92.4% and a specificity of 92.8% for this acid extraction, latex agglutination method when compared with anaerobic culturing for group A streptococci. The results suggest that the 10-Minute Group A Strep ID method may prove to be a useful, very rapid and easy method for diagnosing group A streptococcal pharyngitis directly from throat swabs.
