C-reactive protein and the mode of onset of labor in term pregnancies.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in maternal serum at post-date follow-up can predict the mode of onset of spontaneous delivery in term pregnancies and the interval to delivery. STUDY DESIGN: Women at 40 completed weeks of gestation were recruited. The interval from CRP sampling to delivery and mode of onset of delivery were noted. RESULTS: Sixty women were divided into 3 groups according to the mode of onset of labor. Group A presented with spontaneous onset of contractions, Group B presented with pre-labor ruptured membranes (PROM), and Group C completed 42 we…

The role of C-reactive protein as an inflammatory marker in gastrointestinal diseases.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute-phase protein that is produced in large amounts by hepatocytes, upon stimulation by the cytokines interleukin-6, tumor-necrosis-factor-alpha and interleukin-1beta, during an acute-phase response. CRP is an objective marker of inflammation and, in gastrointestinal diseases such as Crohn's disease and acute pancreatitis, its levels correlate well with clinical disease activity. In contrast to its use as a marker in Crohn's disease, however, CRP is a less reliable marker of inflammation and disease activity in patients with ulcerative colitis, except perhaps f…

Association of - 757T > C polymorphism of C-reactive protein gene with chronic periodontitis of South Indian population.

OBJECTIVE: CRP gene polymorphism is common in inflammatory diseases, but such association has not been reported in periodontitis. Our objective was to interrogate SNPs of crp in chronic periodontitis in a case-control manner. METHODS: DNAs were extracted from mouthwash samples of 116 volunteers using salting-out method. Selected 12 5'UTR SNPs of crp were genotyped using ARMS-PCR. RESULTS: TC genotype of - 757T > C polymorphism (rs3093059) showed protective association (OR- 0.29, 95%CI-0.12-0.68, and p-0.004), and wild type - 757TT showed susceptible association with a p value of 0.008 (OR-3.

C-reactive protein and IL-6: new marker proteins for the diagnosis of CJD in plasma?

BACKGROUND: CJD is usually diagnosed by clinical and neuropathological findings. A number of proteins regarded as markers for neuronal damag … a control group of 42 healthy subjects. The samples were analyzed with tests that were specific for C-reactive protein (CRP), IL-6, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), S-100 proteins, and cellular prion protein (PrP(c)). The results were compared, and a cutoff level for each test used was defined as the 90th percentile from the control group. RESULTS: The assay specific …

[Usefulness of the determination of C reactive protein and other acute phase proteins in rheumatoid arthritis].

The acute phase response is defined as a large number of diverse reactions which attempt to adjust the organism to the effects of stress/injury. It is now clear that there is a complex interaction between the cytokines with interleukin-6 predominant, but also involving interleukin-1, tumor necrosis factor and a group of recently described cytokines including as well interleukin-11, leukaemia inhibitory factor and oncostatin M all of which influence the levels of acute phase proteins. In clinical practice, C reactive protein (CRP) is frequently used as marker of the acute-phase response. It has

Postoperative course of C-reactive protein level after liver surgery-when to worry?

BACKGROUND: C-reactive protein (CRP) level is an established marker to detect inflammation and infectious complications after surgical procedures, but its use after liver surgery has not been well investigated. This study aimed to elucidate the role of CRP level after elective liver resection and to determine baseline values for a normal postoperative course, as well as the role of CRP level as a predictor of postoperative complications. METHODS: All liver resections performed between January 2008 and December 2023 were identified. Patients' characteristics, intraoperative data and postoperat…

Significant correlations between blood lipids, cytokines, and C-reactive protein in healthy humans.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low-grade inflammation plays a central role in cardiometabolic disease, yet the associations between lipid metabolism and inflammatory biomarkers in generally healthy individuals remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between blood lipids, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), and a broad panel of inflammatory cytokines in a healthy adult population. METHODS: A total of 165 healthy participants aged 18-44 years were recruited at the Falun County Hospital, Sweden. Blood samples were analyzed for a full lipid profile, blood co…

C-Reactive Protein for Pulmonary Tuberculosis Screening and Treatment Response Monitoring in Children.

C-reactive protein (CRP) was evaluated as a biomarker for pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis and treatment response monitoring in 292 Kenyan children. Although diagnostic sensitivity was suboptimal (35.5%-50.0%), the median CRP level decreased during TB treatment in children with confirmed (P = .02) or unconfirmed (P < .001) TB, primarily among those with baseline CRP elevation ≥5 mg/L (40% [39 of 97]).

Stabilized C-reactive protein-albumin-lymphocyte (CALLY) index predicts adjacent fractures after kyphoplasty.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a stabilized C-reactive protein–albumin–lymphocyte (CALLY) index measured 4–6 weeks after percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) independently predicts adjacent vertebral fracture (AVF), and to compare its discrimination with other immuno-nutritional indices. METHODS: Consecutive patients undergoing single-level PKP for osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture at a tertiary center between January 2020 and December 2024 were analyzed. Stabilized laboratory tests were obtained 4–6 weeks postoperatively. CALLY was calculated as albumin (g/L) × lymphocyte count (×10⁹/L) …

Incorporating the lymphocyte-C-reactive protein ratio into risk stratification for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prognostic role of the lymphocyte-C-reactive protein ratio (LCR) in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) within the TNM framework. METHODS: This study enrolled 248 resected ICC patients (low-LCR: 122; high-LCR: 126). A modified TNM (mTNM)system incorporating LCR was proposed. RESULTS: Low LCR was an independent prognostic factor for both overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) by multivariable analysis. Median OS and RFS times were 43.2 and 12.8 months. Patients were stratified into 5 subgroups according to the mTNM staging system: group 1 (n = 6…

C-reactive protein and residual cardiovascular risk in hypertension: a prospective cohort study.

Control of systolic blood pressure (SBP) is important to prevent major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in hypertension. However, many individuals with controlled SBP still experience MACE, and the mechanisms remain relatively unknown. We sought to investigate whether elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), indicator of systemic inflammation, was associated with residual MACE risk in hypertensive individuals with controlled SBP. Community hypertensive individuals without cardiovascular disease (CVD) at baseline were included from UK Biobank study (n = 200243; mean age 58.3 years; females 50.3%;…

Frequency of abnormal C-reactive protein concentrations in blood of dogs with hypoadrenocorticism.

BACKGROUND: C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration in serum or plasma is high in humans during adrenal crisis due to multiple mechanisms, however, the frequency and clinical relevance of high CRP concentrations in dogs with hypoadrenocorticism are unknown. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency of high CRP concentrations in serum or plasma of dogs with hypoadrenocorticism. We hypothesized that CRP concentrations are commonly above reference limit in dogs with hypoadrenocorticism with and without inflammatory comorbidities. ANIMALS: Fifty-one dogs with hypoadrenocorticism presented…
