Cold Renal Perfusion During Simulation of Juxtarenal Aortic Aneurysm Repair Reduces Systemic Oxidative Stress and Sigmoid Damage in Rats.

OBJECTIVES: Juxtarenal aortic surgery induces renal ischaemia reperfusion, which contributes to systemic inflammatory tissue injury and remote organ damage. Renal cooling during suprarenal cross clamping has been shown to reduce renal damage. It is hypothesised that renal cooling during suprarenal cross clamping also has systemic effects and could decrease damage to other organs, like the sigmoid colon. METHODS: Open juxtarenal aortic aneurysm repair was simulated in 28 male Wistar rats with suprarenal cross clamping for 45 min, followed by 20 min of infrarenal aortic clamping. Four groups we

Plaster cast burns: the reality.

An in vivo experimental study was performed of the temperatures produced by a setting plaster cast using hot and cold water. The results confirmed a statistical difference in the temperatures reached using hot and cold water. Forearm and below knee plasters did not represent a burn risk. Lower limb cylinder casts reached sufficient temperatures to cause burns with hot water but did not remain at these temperatures long enough to pose a clinical risk.

Are cold extremities an issue in women's health? Epidemiological evaluation of cold extremities among Japanese women.

BACKGROUND: Unlike traditional East Asian medicine, the necessity of health care services for cold extremities is yet to be acknowledged in Western medicine. In this study, we aimed to conduct an epidemiological evaluation of this unremarkable symptom among women in Japan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from February 2016 to April 2017, and data of 238 women throughout Japan were analyzed. Questionnaires were used to examine participants' demographics, health-related behaviors, health status, and frequency of subjective symptoms over the past 1 year. The associat

[Hypothermia, chilblain and frostbite].

Many factors such as the environmental conditions (temperature and humidity etc.), a nutritional status, the degree of fatigue, a moisturizing state of the body, clothes, the sensitivity to coldness are involved in an outbreak of hypothermia. Children, aged persons and the presence of an underlying disease are also risk factors related to the occurrence of hypothermia. The dysfunction of the respiratory system, the circulatory system and the central nervous system is caused by a decrease in body temperature. Finally, death is brought about at 25 degrees C of body temperature or lower. Frostbit

UW Supplementation with AP39 Improves Liver Viability Following Static Cold Storage.

Static cold storage of donor livers at 4°C incompletely arrests metabolism, ultimately leading to decreases in ATP levels, oxidative stress, cell death, and organ failure. Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) is an endogenously produced gas, previously demonstrated to reduce oxidative stress, reduce ATP depletion, and protect from ischemia and reperfusion injury. H2S is difficult to administer due to its rapid release curve, resulting in cellular death at high concentrations. AP39, a mitochondrially targeted, slow-release H2S donor, has been shown to reduce ischemia-reperfusion injury in hearts and kidneys.

Impact of different temperature stimuli on the expression of myosin heavy chain isoforms during recovery from bupivacaine-induced muscle injury in rats.

Limited information exists regarding the impact of different temperature stimuli on myosin heavy chain (MyHC) expression in skeletal muscle during recovery from injury. Therefore, this experiment investigated the impact of both cold and heat exposure on the MyHC isoform profile in the rat soleus during recovery from injury. Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into control, bupivacaine-injected (BPVC), BPVC with icing, and BPVC with heat stress groups. Muscle injury was induced by intramuscular injection of bupivacaine into soleus muscles of male Wistar rats. Icing treatment (0°C for 20 min)

Increased pain and neurogenic inflammation in mice deficient of neutral endopeptidase.

The complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is characterized by enhanced neurogenic inflammation, mediated by neuropeptides. Neutral endopeptidase (NEP) is a key enzyme in neuropeptide catabolism. We used NEP knock out (ko) mice to investigate whether NEP deficiency leads to increased pain behavior and signs of neurogenic inflammation after soft tissue trauma with and without nerve injury. After chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the right sciatic nerve, NEP ko mice were more sensitive to heat, to mechanical stimuli, and to cold than wild type mice. Tissue injury without nerve injury produced

Inhibition of SARM1 Reduces Neuropathic Pain in a Spared Nerve Injury Rodent Model.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: The function of the sterile alpha and toll/interleukin receptor motif-containing protein 1 (SARM1) in neuropathic pain development has not yet been established. This protein has a central role in regulating axon degeneration and its depletion delays this process. This study aims to demonstrate the effects of SARM1 deletion on the development of neuropathic pain. METHODS: Thirty-two wild-type (WT) or SARM1 knockout (KO) rats underwent spared nerve injury (SNI) or sham surgery. Mechanical allodynia was assessed by electronic Von Frey and cold hyperalgesia by the acetone test.

A comprehensive proteomics and phosphorylation analysis reveals the negative role of VaVIP1 in cold tolerance in grapevine.

Grapevine is an economically important fruit crop worldwide and is susceptible to low temperature stress. Protein post-translational modifications play a crucial role in grapevine cold tolerance. Here, we performed integrated proteomic and phosphoproteomic analyses of Vitis amurensis, identifying widespread phosphorylation alterations across 4797 proteins and 10,104 phosphorylation sites distributed in 56 motifs. Cold treatment induced 165 differential phosphorylation proteins and 635 differential phosphorylation sites. Functional enrichment indicates that these proteins are predominantly invo

Sensory perturbations using suture and sutureless repair of transected median nerve in rats.

The effects of changes to cold, mechanical, and heat thresholds following median nerve transection with repair by sutures (Su) or Rose Bengal adhesion (RA) were compared to sham-operated animals. Both nerve-injured groups showed a transient, ipsilateral hyposensitivity to mechanical and heat stimuli followed by a robust and long-lasting hypersensitivity (6-7 weeks) with gradual recovery towards pre-injury levels by 90 days post-repair. Both tactile and thermal hypersensitivity were seen in the contralateral limb that was similar in onset but differed in magnitude and resolved more rapidly comp

Concentration-effect relationship of intravenous alfentanil and ketamine on peripheral neurosensory thresholds, allodynia and hyperalgesia of neuropathic pain.

Both mu opioid agonists and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists are implicated in the regulation of neuropathic pain in post-nerve injury preclinical pain models. This study characterizes the effects of intravenously infused alfentanil (a mu-receptor agonist) and ketamine (an NMDA-receptor antagonist) on human neuropathic pain states, characterized by allodynia and hyperalgesia. Using diphenhydramine as the placebo, alfentanil and ketamine infusions were given in a randomized double-blind fashion 1 week apart via a computer-controlled infusion (CCI) pump that was programmed to tar

Ex vivo exposure to carbon monoxide prevents hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury through p38 MAP kinase pathway.

A direct role of carbon monoxide (CO), an effector-signaling molecule during heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) catalysis of heme, in the protection against hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury needs to be established. This study was designed to determine the effects and downstream mechanisms of CO on cold I/R injury in a clinically relevant isolated perfusion rat liver model. After 24 hours of cold storage, rat livers perfused ex vivo for 2 hours with blood supplemented with CO (300 parts per million) showed significantly decreased portal venous resistance and increased bile production, as compared
