Dietary supplementation with pioglitazone hydrochloride and chromium methionine manipulates lipid metabolism with related genes to improve the intramuscular fat and fatty acid profile of yellow-feathered chickens.

BACKGROUND: Intramuscular fat (IMF) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have been thought to play a crucial role in improving meat quality. Considering the ability of pioglitazone hydrochloride (PGZ) to deposit fat, and the anti-stress capability of chromium methionine (CrMet), we combined these compounds to produce higher quality meat in poultry. A total of 3000 female chickens were divided into four groups (five replicates, each with 150 chickens): control, control plus15 mg·kg-1 PGZ, control plus 200 μg·kg-1 CrMet, and control plus15 mg·kg-1 PGZ plus 200 μg·kg-1 CrMet. The experiment la

Dietary dimethylglycine alleviates cyclic heat stress-induced jejunal injury in yellow-feathered broilers by inhibiting the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway and restoring MUC2 expression.

This study aimed to investigate the protective effect and mechanism of dietary dimethylglycine (DMG) on jejunal injury in yellow-feathered broilers subjected to cyclic heat stress (HS). A total of 180 35-day-old male yellow-feathered broilers were randomly allocated into 3 groups: the thermoneutral condition with basal diet group (CON), the cycle heat stress with basal diet group (HS, 32-35°C), and the cycle heat stress with 0.1% DMG in basal diet group (HS_DMG, 32-35°C). The experiment included a 7-day heating period followed by a 14-day cyclic heat stress period. Growth performance, rectal t

Energy efficient recovery of keratin from poultry feather waste through l-cysteine reduction in CaCl2-ethanol-water system and application of regenerated keratin in textile printing.

Keratin, as an important renewable bio-resource, is widely found in poultry feathers, wool, hair and animal horn. Dissolution of feather keratin is a key process in recycling and utilization of these important biomass materials. This study uses l-cysteine reduction in CaCl2-ethanol-water system to dissolve feather and recover keratin. Results showed that 62% regeneration rate of feather keratin can be achieved under the treatment conditions of 70℃, 1.5 h and bath ratio 1:35. Although a reduction in α-helix structure and crystallinity is seen in regenerated keratin from original feather, the re

Calcium, non-phytate phosphorus and electrolyte balance in low-protein diet influence growth, tibia development and muscular protein deposition in medium-growing yellow-feathered broilers.

Excessive protein intake increases production costs and pollutant emissions in poultry production. As a result, low-protein diets supplemented with essential amino acids is considered a new normal. However, the mineral requirements in low-protein diet of broilers remain unclear. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels of calcium (Ca), non-phytate phosphorus (NPP), and electrolyte balance in a low-protein diet on the growth performance, serum parameters, tibia characteristics, muscular protein deposition and related gene expression in medium-growing

Effects of dietary multienzymes on the growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, nutrient digestibility, excreta noxious gas emission, and nutrient transporter gene expression in white feather broilers.

Adding multienzymes to poultry feed rations is recognized as a nutritional strategy aimed at improving poultry performance and health status. Nonetheless, some literatures present an ongoing debate about the extent of multienzymes beneficial impact on poultry growth performance. This study aimed to explore the impacts of dietary multienzyme supplementation on broilers, focusing specifically on growth performance, carcass characteristics, apparent nutrient digestibility, excreta noxious gas emission, and intestinal nutrient transporter gene expression. A total of 3,200 broilers were randomly as

A critically co-endangered feather louse Forficuloecus pezopori n. sp. (Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) detected through conservation intervention for the western ground parrot Pezoporus flaviventris (Psittaculidae).

Forficuloecus pezopori Martin, Keatley & Ash n. sp. from the western ground parrot Pezoporus flaviventris North, 1911 (Psittaculidae) is proposed based on combined evidence from morphology and COI mitochondrial DNA. Phylogenetically, the new species is closest to its two known congeners from Western Australia: F. josephi Price, Johnson & Palma, 2008 from Bourke's parrot Neopsephotus bourkii (Gould, 1841) and the scarlet-chested parrot Neophema splendida (Gould, 1841), and F. palmai Guimarães, 1985 from the Australian ringneck parrot Barnardius zonarius (Shaw, 1805). Allopsoroptoides galli n. g., n. sp., a new genus and species of feather mites (Acari: Analgoidea: Psoroptoididae) causing mange in commercially raised domestic chicken in Brazil.

A new feather mite, Allopsoroptoides galli n. g., n. sp. (Psoroptoididae: Pandalurinae), is described from the domestic chicken, Gallus gallus (Linnaeus) (Galliformes: Phasianidae), from Brazil. This is the first record of a representative of the feather mite family Psoroptoididae from an avian host of the order Galliformes. The new genus is closely related to the genus Cygnocoptes Fain & Bochkov, 2003 but clearly differs from the latter and all other genera of the family by the loss of four median pairs of hysteronotal setae (c1, d1, e1, and h1) in both sexes and by the unique shape of the ma

Mercury accumulation and biomagnification in the barn owl (Tyto alba) food chain.

Mercury (Hg) accumulation and biomagnification in the barn owl (Tyto alba) food chain were investigated using bioindicator samples from three trophic levels: (1) soil and moss (atmospheric deposition indicators), (2) small mammal fur from regurgitated pellets (herbivores and omnivores), and (3) barn owl down feathers (apex predators). Spatial analysis identified regional Hg variation in soil, fur and feathers. Statistical models explored the effects of proximity to water bodies, wetlands and nearby pollution sources. The highest total Hg (THg) concentrations were found in feathers (170 ± 160 µ

Stable Mercury Trends Support a Long-Term Diet Shift Away from Marine Foraging in Salish Sea Glaucous-Winged Gulls over the Last Century.

Marine predators are monitored as indicators of pollution, but such trends can be complicated by variation in diet. Glaucous-winged gulls (Larus glaucescens) have experienced a dietary shift over the past century, from mainly marine to including more terrestrial/freshwater inputs, with unknown impacts on mercury (Hg) trends. We examined 109-year trends in total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in glaucous-winged gull feathers (1887-1996) from the Salish Sea. Adult flank feathers had higher MeHg concentrations than immature feathers, and males head feathers had higher THg c

Dietary Energy-Protein Balance Regulates Slaughter Traits, Meat Quality, Digestive Enzyme Activity, and Fecal Microbiota in Early-Weaned Gray-Feathered King Pigeon Squabs.

Early-weaned squabs are sensitive to dietary energy-protein supply, but combined effects remain unclear. We tested metabolizable energy (ME; 11.9, 12.2, and 12.5 MJ/kg) and crude protein (CP; 18, 19, and 20%) in 216 15-day-old gray-feathered King pigeon (Columba livia domestica) squabs using a 3 × 3 factorial design. Higher ME increased abdominal fat percentage, whereas CP affected slaughter traits. ME × CP interactions occurred for live weight, liver index, breast and leg muscle quality, and most digestive enzyme activities. At 18% CP, live weight was significantly higher at 12.5 than at 12.2

A flavonoid extract from Bupleurum aerial parts given at recovery onset attenuates residual liver and lung injury in yellow-feathered broilers after acute heat exposure.

Most broiler heat stress studies focus on the exposure phase, whereas the first hours after heat withdrawal remain understudied. We tested whether a flavonoid extract from Bupleurum aerial parts (BAPF), administered at recovery onset, could reduce residual liver and lung injury in yellow-feathered broilers exposed to 35 °C for 6 h and then cooled to 24 °C over the next 6 h. The extract improved liver and lung histology, lowered serum injury markers and circulating interleukin-1β and interleukin-18, and improved hepatic redox indices, with the most consistent responses at 46 to 68 mg/kg body we

The effect of long-term housing in an aviary and battery cages on the physical condition of laying hens: body weight, feather condition, claw length, foot lesions, and tibia strength.

The physical condition of laying hens housed for 3 yr in either traditional battery cages or an aviary was compared. Aviary hens were significantly lighter than those in cages (2,021 vs 2,241 g; P = .0001), despite having consumed slightly more feed (121 vs 116 g per bird per d, P = .16). Caged hens had poorer feather cover (P = .0001); 39% of caged birds had denuded areas greater than 5 cm2, whereas 68% of aviary hens had complete plumage. The length of both center front and rear claws was significantly greater in caged hens (36.3 vs 30.3 mm, P = .001 and 19.2 vs 16.1 mm, P = .012, respective

Residue accumulation, distribution, and withdrawal period of sulfamethazine and N-acetylsulfamethazine in poultry waste from broilers.

Sulfamethazine is one of the most frequently used sulfonamides in the poultry farming industry. However, the residue accumulation, distribution, and depletion of sulfamethazine (SMZ) and its metabolite, N4-acetylsulfamethazine (NAS), in poultry waste (manure and feathers) have yet to be evaluated. In our study, the residue levels of SMZ and NAS in manure and feathers are determined by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Furthermore, the distribution, depletion, and withdrawal period of SMZ and NAS in manure and feathers are investigated under field conditions. Results show that hig
