Brown bowel syndrome is the name applied to a brown discoloration of the intestine. This is due to lipofuscin deposition in intestinal smooth muscle and occurs in association with malabsorption. Three cases occurring in a coeliac registry of 559 patients are described. One patient presented with acute massive bleeding per rectum, and two were diagnosed at autopsy. The syndrome may be accompanied by vitamin E deficiency and neurologic dysfunction. Two patients had evidence of peripheral neuropathy, and one had low vitamin E levels. An outbreak of LI infection in a group of free range horses is described. Three of 4 horses displayed signs of CNS disturbance and 2 of these died after illnesses ranging from 2-12 days duration. In both cases a variable degree of viral polioencephalomyelitis was observed. A virus antigenically indistinguishable from a reference strain of LI virus was isolated from the brain and cervical cord of a 3 y.o. draft mare. Serum samples obtained from 3 of the horses contained HI, CF, precipitating and neutralising antibodies to LI virus, with a rise in antibody titre being demonstrated in 2 animals.

Shigella flexneri producing OXA-181 was detected from a patient in Ireland in October 2025. The isolate had a meropenem minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.12 mg/L. Carbapenemase production was detected by lateral flow immunoassay. The sequence type was ST245 and closely related to sequences previously reported from Ireland and other countries but not previously linked to presence of the bla OXA-181 gene. Carbapenemase production in Shigella spp. has implications for laboratory detection and empiric treatment.

METHOD: A retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing surgical management of maxillofacial fractures, between January 2014 and December 2023, was undertaken. The Pobal 2022 Index utilises recent census data to determine relative deprivation of each electoral region.
