OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the corneal topography and pachymetry in keratoconus.
METHODS: Thirty-five patients (47 eyes) with keratoconus were evaluated by Orbscan corneal topography system. The location, anterior and posterior surface elevation, curvature and pachymetry were analyzed with special reference to the central point of cornea, the apex, the highest point of posterior surface, the point with greatest curvature and the thinnest point. The correlation between the point of greatest curvature and the apex was also analyzed.

Local immunity was studied in 81 patients (146 eyes) aged 11-49 with keratoconus at different stages of the disease running different course. The concentrations of IgG, IgM, secretory IgA, lysozyme, immune complexes, C3 component of the complement, transferrin, and alpha 1-antitrypsin are increased in tears of patients with keratoconus, reflecting the activation of local immunity in this condition.

At the Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital in Lund, Sweden, keratoconus is the most common indication for penetrating keratoplasty. We studied 77 keratoplasties performed on keratoconic eyes between 1989-1991. Postoperative corrected visual acuity was better than or equal to 0.5 in 65 eyes (84.4%), and 30 eyes (39%) had visual acuity of 1.0. A 30-year-old white male with keratoconus had uneventful radial keratotomy in his right eye. Although a good initial response was obtained with total correction of myopia and astigmatism, by 18 months postoperatively the entire result had regressed and the patient demonstrated reformation of the cone and regression to high myopia. Five hundred and thirty cases of spring catarrh were studied at the Department of Ophthalmology, Khyber Hospital Peshawar, Pakistan. Visual acuity is one of the most important parameters for evaluating the vision of patients with keratoconus. This study reviewed 295 articles related to keratoconus published between 2017 and 2022 in which visual acuity was one of the parameters measured. The methodology of visual acuity testing in studies on keratoconus was thoroughly analyzed.
