Adverse early-life conditions and their impact on the marriage market and social mobility: The Poznań birth cohort, 1830-1855.

OBJECTIVES: Early-life conditions may influence later-life outcomes through biological scarring and selective survival mechanisms. However, the long-term effects of childhood adversity on marriage formation and social mobility remain insufficiently explored in historical populations. This study examines whether exposure to adverse early-life conditions affected the probability of entering a first marriage and social mobility at first marriage in 19th-century Poznań. METHODS: The study draws on linked individual-level data from the Poznań Historical Population Database, including birth, marria…

Duration Since Marriage as a Determinant of Infertility in an Indian Scenario: Analysis Based on National Family Health Survey Data.

BACKGROUND: The demographic definition of female infertility is a woman of reproductive age when she fails to conceive even after 5 years of unprotected sexual intercourse. The World Health Organization estimates the overall prevalence of primary infertility in India between 3.9% and 16.8%. The present study was aimed at evaluating the "duration since marriage" (DSM) of a woman as a determinant of infertility using National Family Health Survey (NFHS), India data, as no such previous literature is available. MATERIALS AND METHODS: National Family Health Survey-4 (2015-16) data of Indian marri…

Myotonia congenita and periodic hypokalemia paralysis in a consanguineous marriage pedigree: Coexistence of a novel CLCN1 mutation and an SCN4A mutation.

Myotonia congenita and hypokalemic periodic paralysis type 2 are both rare genetic channelopathies caused by mutations in the CLCN1 gene encoding voltage-gated chloride channel CLC-1 and the SCN4A gene encoding voltage-gated sodium channel Nav1.4. The patients with concomitant mutations in both genes manifested different unique symptoms from mutations in these genes separately. Here, we describe a patient with myotonia and periodic paralysis in a consanguineous marriage pedigree. By using whole-exome sequencing, a novel F306S variant in the CLCN1 gene and a known R222W mutation in the SCN4A ge…

Marriage patterns in Sri Lanka and the prevalence of parental consanguinity in patients with β-thalassaemia: a cross-sectional descriptive analysis.

Consanguineous marriages potentially play an important role in the transmission of β-thalassaemia in many communities. This study aimed to determine the rate and socio-demographic associations of consanguineous marriages and to assess the influence on the prevalence of β-thalassaemia in Sri Lanka. Three marriage registrars from each district of Sri Lanka were randomly selected to prospectively collect data on all couples who registered their marriage during a 6-month period starting 1st July 2009. Separately, the parents of patients with β-thalassaemia were interviewed to identify consanguinit…

Facile marriage of Gd3+ to polymer-coated carbon nanodots with enhanced biocompatibility for targeted MR/fluorescence imaging of glioma.

Overcoming blood-brain barrier (BBB) for precise glioma diagnosis remains an urgent challenge due to its peculiar location in central nervous system (CNS). Herein, polymer-coated carbon nanodots with high hydrophilicity were facilely married with Gd-DTPA to construct a dual-modal imaging system (NCDDG). This system was demonstrated with obviously decreased toxicity and enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) ability compared to traditional Gd-DTPA. Meanwhile, NCDDG reserved the bright fluorescence of biocompatible carbon nanodots with increased spatial resolution. Attributed to small size an

[Consanguineous marriage and morbi-mortality, short literature review based on an exceptional association: Usher syndrome and Von Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis].

Usher syndrome is defined by the association of a progressive or non-progressive congenital sensorineural hearing loss with variable severit … genetic diseases, increases quite significantly the probability of their occurrence. Consanguineous marriages are still widespread in Maghreb and in some regions of the western African. This observation reports an exceptional case of this association in a 40-year-old man of Mauritanian origin born from a consanguineous union.

Early marriage, rape, child prostitution, and related factors determining the psychosocial effects severity of child sexual abuse in Ethiopia.

This study was aimed at identifying factors that determine the psychosocial effects severity of child sexual abuse. Data were collected from 318 female children in Ethiopia using the Children's Impact of Traumatic Events Scale-Revised and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. The results revealed that respondents who survived rape and child prostitution were more symptomatic than those who were married early. Respondents for whom less time had elapsed since their first experience of abuse demonstrated a significantly higher level of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, negative reactions by oth

Sweeping Changes in Marriage, Cohabitation, and Childbearing in Central and Eastern Europe: New Insights from the Developmental Idealism Framework.

In Central and Eastern Europe following the political transformations of the late 1980s and early 1990s there were dramatic declines in marriage and childbearing, significant increases in nonmarital cohabitation and childbearing, and a movement from reliance on abortion to a reliance on contraception for fertility limitation. Although many explanations have been offered for these trends, we offer new explanations based on ideational influences and the intersection of these ideational influences with structural factors. We focus on the political, economic, social, and cultural histories of the …

Asymmetric associations of depressive symptoms with frailty and the moderating roles of marriage and gender: A longitudinal study of older Korean adults.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms are a well-established risk factor for frailty in later life, yet most studies treat depression as a static … and frailty. Gender-stratified and interaction models revealed that this protective association of marriage was significant among women but not among men. CONCLUSIONS: Findings highlight the asymmetric nature of the depression-frailty link and underscore the importance of marital and gender contexts. These findings point to the value of early identificat …

Meckel-Gruber syndrome together with Dandy-Walker malformation: an atypical case report of a 2nd recurrence in a consanguine marriage.

Meckel-Gruber syndrome is a lethal disorder characterized by occipital encephalocele, polycystic kidneys, and polydactyly. In most cases, it is identified and terminated antenatally. In this report, the authors present a case of Meckel-Gruber syndrome together with Dandy-Walker malformation. A pregnant woman referred at the 28th week of gestation with an abnormal ultrasound scan showing posterior encephalocele and bilaterally enlarged kidneys. Further imaging also indicated communication between the 4th ventricle and posterior cerebellar cerebrospinal fluid space, after which the fetus was dia

Patterning of midlife marital trajectories in enduring marriages in a dyadic context: Physical and mental health outcomes in later years.

The current study, using prospective data over 25 years (1991-2015; N = 245 couples), investigates life course dyadic patterns of positive and negative marital trajectories (i.e., marital strength and strain, respectively) in middle-aged husbands and wives and an array of physical and mental health outcomes associated with these patterns. Spousal warmth, spouse's constructive conflict resolution, and couple's joint participation were used as indicators of marital strength, whereas spousal hostility, spouse's destructive conflict resolution, and marital instability were used as indicators of ma

A Mitochondrial DNA A8701G Mutation Associated with Maternally Inherited Hypertension and Dilated Cardiomyopathy in a Chinese Pedigree of a Consanguineous Marriage.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases, including dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and hypertension, are the leading cause of death worldwide. The role of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in the pathogenesis of these diseases has not been completely clarified. In this study, we evaluate whether A8701G mutation is associated with maternally inherited hypertension and DCM in a Chinese pedigree of a consanguineous marriage. METHODS: Fourteen subjects in a three-generation Han Chinese family with hypertension and DCM, in which consanguineous marriage was present in the parental generation, were interviewed. We…

New-onset urinary symptoms following marriage leading to discovery of inverted urothelial papilloma in a young female: A case report.

Persistent urinary symptoms, such as dysuria and urgency in young women, despite treatment for postcoital urinary tract infections commonly termed "honeymoon cystitis," warrant evaluation for rare entities such as inverted urothelial papilloma (IUP), a benign neoplasm uncommonly seen in young females, with diagnosis confirmed histopathologically, given its potential to mimic recurrent UTI. A 25-year-old newly married female developed recurrent urinary tract infection symptoms shortly after marriage, with only partial improvement with antibiotics. Persistent symptoms prompted imaging and cystos…

Spatial analysis of individual- and village-level sociodemographic characteristics associated with age at marriage among married adolescents in rural Niger.

BACKGROUND: Niger has the highest prevalence of child marriage in the world. While child marriage in Niger is clearly normative in the sense that it is commonly practiced, the social and contextual factors that contribute to it are still unclear. METHODS: Here, we tested the importance of village-level factors as predictors of young age at marriage for a group of married adolescent girls (N = 1031) in the Dosso district of rural Niger, using multi-level and geographic analyses. We aggregated significant individual level factors to determine whether, independent of a girl's own sociodemographi…

Current heterosexual marriage is associated with significantly decreased levels of anxiety symptoms among Chinese men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: The high heterosexual marriage rate could be a 'double-edge' sword for the emotional health of Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM). The aim of this study was to determine if current marriage and breakdown of marriage (divorce) have different effects on the mental health of Chinese MSM. METHODS: Eight hundred seven MSM were recruited using respondent-driven sampling from four cities in northeastern China. Gay-related stressful events (GRSE) were measured using the Gay Related Stressful Life Events Scale; social support was measured by the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS); and…
