Current and evolving trends in the management of facial fractures.

The oral and maxillofacial region has a complex regional anatomy including hard and soft tissues. Trauma in this region may affect the airway, cause potentially life threatening bleeding and head injuries. The senses of olfaction, sight and hearing can also be disrupted as well as a profound psychological impact following disfigurement. This oral and maxillofacial trauma update provides information on demographics, incidence, pathophysiology, diagnosis, fracture patterns and management of facial trauma. It also discusses the role of new advancements in the management of facial trauma.

3D reconstruction images of cone beam computed tomography applied to maxillofacial fractures: A case study and mini review.

Maxillofacial injuries can be complex and are clinically important due to their functional and cosmetic significance. Maltreated and missed fractures might cause deformity of the face; thus, accurate evaluation of the fracture provided by X-ray images is critical. In this study, we explore the application of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for diagnosis of severe maxillofacial traumas. A patient with a complex fracture that affects the maxilla, mandible, wall of the maxillary sinus, zygoma, zygomatic arch and nasal bone was diagnosed using 3D reconstruction of CBCT images. This diagnostic…

Novel presentation of a cricket ball-related intra-abdominal injury: genitofemoral nerve referred pain.

Serious intra-abdominal injuries are very uncommon in cricket; traumatic cricket injuries are traditionally musculoskeletal, soft tissue or maxillofacial in origin. The cause of such cricket injuries can be broadly divided into collision type injuries (a result of direct contact with the ball or bat, another player, the ground or boundary) or overuse injuries (due to running, throwing, batting, bowling, repetitive movements and overexertion). This case report describes a rare cause of small bowel perforation and suspected genitofemoral nerve injury secondary to the direct impact of a cricket b

Self-inflicted craniomaxillofacial gunshot wounds: management, reconstruction, and outcomes.

Suicide by firearm remains one of the leading causes of violence-related injury death in the United States each year. The mortality rate from these injuries is high, resulting in a paucity of outcome data in the literature regarding injuries to the maxillofacial region. This has largely been attributed to a lack of funding for research in this area compared to other leading causes of mortality in the United States. The aim of this study was to detail the authors' experience and approach to complex maxillofacial reconstruction using both local reconstructive methods and microvascular free tissu

Identifying Injury Patterns Associated With Physical Elder Abuse: Analysis of Legally Adjudicated Cases.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Elder abuse is common and has serious health consequences but is underrecognized by health care providers. An important reason for this is difficulty in distinguishing between elder abuse and unintentional trauma. Our goal was to identify injury patterns associated with physical elder abuse in comparison with those of patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with unintentional falls. METHODS: We partnered with a large, urban district attorney's office and examined medical, police, and legal records from successfully prosecuted cases of physical abuse of victims ag
