RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the performance of tomosynthesis in the presence of osteosynthetic implants, aiming to overcome superimposition-induced limitations in conventional radiograms.

Spontaneous fixations of MP-joints of fingers and thumbs are rare and are often a challenging task for hand surgeons. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of carbon dioxide (CO(2)) gas for joint distention during arthroscopy for removal of osteochondral (OC) fragments of the palmar/plantar aspect of the metacarpo (MCP)/metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints in horses.

I describe an adult female skeleton (#Yo3-96) from the Yokem Mound skeletal series that had microcephaly; mild micrognathia; a broad nasal bridge; orbital hypertelorism; hypoplasia of the first metacarpals; pes planus; anomalies of the cervical spine, ribs, and sternum; and delayed epiphyseal remodeling of the radii and tibiae. Four acute cases of volar carpometacarpal dislocations of the medial four metacarpals were treated in our hospital's emergency room. Our initial diagnosis after clinical examination was confirmed by routine x-rays of the hand. Closed reduction was followed by percutaneous fixation of the carpometacarpal joints with Kirschner wires. Satisfactory function of the hand was obtained in all cases.

Small external fixators have been developed for use in the hand and wrist. The main indications are stabilization of open or infected fracture or non-union of the metacarpals and phalanges; length maintenance in segmental bone loss; and distraction-lengthening of the fingers. The device may be used also for articular or periarticular fracture, closed diaphyseal fracture in adults, fracture in children, various arthrodeses, or corrective osteotomies.

It has been reported that metacarpal morphometry does not correlate with iliac crest histomorphometry in patients with hip fractures. Such disagreement led us to study the correlation between both types of measurements on 35 patients who had suffered hip fracture. We observed a significant correlation between metacarpal morphometry and iliac crest cortical width (p less than 0.001), and to a lesser degree with the trabecular bone volume (p less than 0.01). The same was also true if we assessed separately the patients with cervical or trochanteric hip fractures.
