Electrically tunable metasurfaces leveraging the strong Pockels effect in barium titanate (BaTiO3 or BTO) are a promising platform for reconfigurable free-space optical devices. However, the high cost, limited scalability, and restricted substrate compatibility of epitaxial BTO films hinder its exploitation. Here, we demonstrate free-space optical modulators based on imprinted BTO metasurfaces with targeted designs for optical and electric field confinement within the active material. With resonances exhibiting high quality factors of up to 200, we demonstrate improved transmission modulation …

In recent years, vertically stacked van der Waals heterostructures have attracted significant attention due to their highly tunable electronic properties and exceptional optical performance. Within the framework of density functional theory, we conducted a systematic investigation of the structural, electronic, and optical properties of a vertically stacked AsP/SnS2 heterostructure. Our calculations reveal that the AsP/SnS2 heterobilayer possesses an indirect bandgap of 1.24 eV, as determined by HSE06, and features a type-II band alignment that promotes the spatial separation of photogenerated

Optofluidic devices have revolutionized the manipulation and transportation of fluid at smaller length scales ranging from micrometers to millimeters. We describe a dedicated optical setup for studying laser-induced cavitation inside a microchannel. In a typical experiment, we use a tightly focused laser beam to locally evaporate the solution laced with a dye resulting in the formation of a microbubble. The evolving bubble interface is tracked using high-speed microscopy and digital image analysis. Furthermore, we extend this system to analyze fluid flow through fluorescence-Particle Image Vel

The recent emergence of van der Waals (vdW) materials with exceptional optical nonlinearity has driven advances in next-generation nonlinear photonic devices beyond classical optics. While integrating these materials into fiber-optic platforms offers unprecedented functionalities in quantum systems, realizing telecom-band in-line photon-pair sources based on highly nonlinear vdW materials remains challenging. Here, we report photon-pair generation centered at telecom wavelength via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a fiber-integrated device incorporating a ferroelectric vdW crystal, Sn

All aberrations produced inside a biospecimen can degrade the quality of a three-dimensional image in two-photon excitation laser scanning microscopy. Previously, we developed a transmissive liquid-crystal device to correct spherical aberrations that improved the image quality of a fixed-mouse-brain slice treated with an optical clearing reagent. In this study, we developed a transmissive device that corrects primary coma aberration and astigmatism. The motivation for this study is that asymmetric aberration can be induced by the shape of a biospecimen and/or by a complicated refractive-index

The advent of graphene catalyzed extensive exploration into two-dimensional (2D) materials, owing to their extraordinary electronic, mechanical, and optical properties. Among these, two-dimensional silicon carbide (2D-SiC) has emerged as a compelling candidate for next-generation optoelectronic devices due to its inherent planar structure, robust mechanical strength, high exciton binding energy, high thermal stability, and wide band gap. In this work, we present a comprehensive first-principles investigation into the effects of intrinsic point defects including vacancies and antisites as well

In this study, we describe a technique for estimating meal times using an earphone-type wearable sensor. A small optical sensor composed of a light-emitting diode and phototransistor is inserted into the ear hole of a user and estimates the meal times of the user from the time variations in the amount of light received. This is achieved by emitting light toward the inside of the ear canal and receiving light reflected back from the ear canal. This proposed technique allowed "meals" to be differentiated from having conversations, sneezing, walking, ascending and descending stairs, operating a c

OBJECTIVES/ HYPOTHESIS: One sequela of skull base surgery is iatrogenic damage to cranial nerves, which can be prevented if the nerve is identified. Devices that stimulate nerves with electric current assist in nerve identification. Contemporary devices have two main limitations: 1) the physical contact of the stimulating electrode and (2) the spread of the current through the tissue. In contrast to electrical stimulation, pulsed infrared optical radiation can be used to safely and selectively stimulate neural tissue and might be valuable for screening.
METHODS: The gerbil facial nerve was ex

Transparent conductors based on few-layer graphene (FLG) intercalated with ferric chloride (FeCl(3)) have an outstandingly low sheet resistance and high optical transparency. FeCl(3)-FLGs outperform the current limit of transparent conductors such as indium tin oxide, carbon-nanotube films, and doped graphene materials. This makes FeCl(3)-FLG materials the best transparent conductor for optoelectronic devices.

Thin-film lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) is a promising platform for integrated photonics, offering a large second-order nonlinearity for electro-optic modulation and nonlinear applications. In this work, we develop a plasmonic waveguide on the thin-film LN which can maintain high optical confinement. By careful design, the propagation losses can be reduced to 109 dB/cm and 462 dB/cm at 1550 nm in simulation and experiment, respectively. The plasmonic waveguide has an effective mode area of only 0.064 μm2, which is one order of magnitude smaller than typical thin-film LNOI waveguides. The

Nonlinear optics underpins a broad range of photonic technologies, from classical and quantum light sources to emerging nonlinear photonic neural networks. Yet, conventional nonlinear-optical devices exhibit static functionality: Their transfer characteristics and emission profiles are dictated by the intrinsic nonlinear process and locked by fabrication, limiting adaptability. Here, we introduce an ultrathin metasurface platform that enables dynamic reconfiguration of nonlinear functionality in a contactless fashion. By leveraging all-optical control of the optical torque exerted on liquid cr…

Transparent substrates widely used in applications such as optical displays, solar cells, and medical devices are highly susceptible to fogging and contamination, often degrading their visual clarity. While various antifogging approaches have been explored, achieving sustained transparency across diverse environments through a simple and scalable design remains a critical challenge in surface engineering. Herein, a structurally simple, low-surface-energy polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) capped hydrogel micropillar arrays comprising poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) are introduced to achieve

Lead-free inorganic halide perovskites, specifically Ba3PX3 (X = Cl, F, I, Br) have gained attention in green photovoltaics due to their remarkable mechanical, optical, structural, and electronic properties. Using first-principles calculations, we investigated the mechanical, electronic, and optical characteristics of Ba3PX3, revealing direct band gaps at the Γ-symmetry point, assessed with the PBE and HSE functionals. The charge distribution analysis shows strong ionic bonding between Ba and halides and covalent bonding between P and halides. The perovskites exhibit desirable optical properti

Thermal nonlinearities in silicon microring resonators induce resonance shifts and bistability that can impact the stability and performance of optical communication systems. We present a CW pump-broadband probe technique that decouples optical excitation from spectral readout, enabling direct observation of bistability and resonance evolution in low-Q silicon microring resonators under self-heating. Unlike conventional single-laser approaches, where resonance behavior is inferred from transmitted optical power, the proposed method directly measures the resonance spectrum while the cavity is o

Two-dimensional (2D) materials, with excellent optoelectronic properties and ultrathin structural features, have emerged as promising candidates for constructing optoelectronic synapse devices (OSDs). However, these 2D OSDs rely on van der Waals heterostructures formed by stacking multiple 2D materials or hybrid stacks of 2D and organic materials, a process that significantly complicates device fabrication. In this work, we simplify the structure of 2D OSDs to a monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with a Fe:LiNbO3 crystal as the substrate. A monolayer MoS2 was transferred onto the surface of

One of the most common methods for reconstructing three-dimensional (3D) images of real or computer-generated objects is digital and computer-generated holography, respectively. Both techniques rely on the use of electro-optical devices that modify the phase or amplitude of light fields in a controlled manner, the so-called spatial light modulators. However, given that holography typically requires coherent light sources, a common problem with three-dimensional projection is the crosstalk between the layers that make up the 3D object. This limits full-depth control and directly affects image q…
