Boron-assisted synthesis of compositionally complex amorphous oxides via short-range-order-constrained generative design.

Engineering short-range atomic order offers a promising route to design amorphous solids. Here, we establish a boron-assisted amorphization strategy using ApolloX, a theory-guided, short-range-order-constrained generative framework for identifying low-energy configurations in compositionally complex multielement systems. Using FeCoNiMoBOx as a model platform, ApolloX generates candidate amorphous structures across varied boron contents. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations reveal that increasing the boron content suppresses atomic diffusion and crystallization, accompanied by the stabiliza

Highly efficient hydrogen production via photothermal-catalytic methanol steam reforming over high-entropy metal oxides.

Methanol steam reforming holds great promise for on-demand hydrogen production under mild conditions. However, the development of catalysts with high activity, effective CO suppression, and efficient solar energy utilization remains a formidable challenge. Here, we present a high-entropy oxide catalyst, CuCeZrLaCrOx, featuring a dominant La2Ce2O7 pyrochlore phase, which enables efficient hydrogen production via a synergistic photothermal mechanism under full-spectrum light irradiation. Mechanistic studies reveal that methanol steam reforming on this catalyst mainly proceeds via the formate pat

Zinc-catalyzed dehydrogenative coupling of primary alcohols and secondary/benzyl phosphine oxides for alkene synthesis.

A zinc-catalyzed method has been developed for the direct conversion of primary alcohols into alkenes under acceptorless dehydrogenation conditions. Utilizing a simple and Earth-abundant zinc catalyst, this approach enables the dehydrogenative coupling of primary alcohols with either diphenylphosphine oxide (to generate symmetric alkenes) or benzyl phosphine oxides (to generate asymmetric alkenes), affording a diverse range of alkenes in moderate to high yields with (E)-selectivity. This strategy provides a promising facile route for alkene synthesis directly from readily accessible alcohols,

Palladium Catalyzed Asymmetric C(sp)-P Cross-Coupling via Kinetic Resolution of Secondary Phosphine Oxides.

Herein, we report a palladium-catalyzed asymmetric C(sp)-P cross-coupling reaction between secondary phosphine oxides (SPOs) and alkynyl chlorides, providing a direct and efficient route to access P-stereogenic alkynyl phosphine oxides via a kinetic resolution process. This method proceeds under mild conditions, delivering products with excellent enantioselectivity (up to 94% ee) and good functional group tolerance. This work offers a straightforward and modular strategy for the synthesis of valuable chiral alkynyl phosphorus compounds.

Engineering stable thallium immobilization through synergistic microbial-mineral partnership in Fe-doped biogenic manganese oxides.

Thallium (Tl), an extremely toxic heavy metal, poses severe threats to water security due to the high mobility and toxicity of its monovalent form (Tl(I)). While biogenic manganese oxides (BMOs) show promise for Tl remediation, their practical application is hindered by structural instability and performance limitations. This study develops a breakthrough strategy through iron-doped BMOs (Fe-BMOs) that establish a synergistic microbial-mineral partnership for enhanced Tl immobilization. By optimizing Fe(III) incorporation (0.2%) during the early exponential phase of Pseudomonas putida MnB1(a m

Dinitrite to Dinitrosyl at Manganese: {Mn(NO)2}8 in Redox Transformations of Nitrogen Oxides.

Owing to the highly reactive and transient nature of nitric oxide (NO) and nitroxyl (HNO), the identification of reliable NO/HNO sources is of paramount interest for the development of therapeutic strategies and for understanding NO/HNO signaling pathways. We demonstrate here that a mononuclear manganese(II)-dinitrite complex (2-Py) reacts with p-methylbenzenethiol (MeArSH) to generate the dinitrosyl species 3-Py/3'-Py. The dinitrosyl {Mn(NO)2}8 core in 3'-Py is capable of facile transfer of both NO and NO- to suitable metal centers. Interestingly, a reaction with pentafluorophenol F5ArOH with

Exploring time dependent trends and risks of pyrrolizidine alkaloids and their N-oxides in food.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) and their N-oxides (PA-N-oxides) are phytotoxins which raise safety concerns when present in food. This study analyzes trends in their levels and associated risks in selected samples of food items (n = 3752) from 2011 to 2023, a period marked by risk management actions following evaluations by EFSA and others. Contamination levels and temporal trends were assessed, followed by risk evaluations using the margin of exposure (MOE) approach, both without and with consideration of relative potency, applying available interim relative potency (iREP) values. The findings

Preparation of hexagonal iron flakes with a hexagonal structure on the sublayer of copper oxides.

The stabilization of hexagonal close-packed (hcp) iron at ambient conditions remains a significant challenge due to its metastable nature. Here, we report a novel and facile strategy for templating the epitaxial growth of hcp-Fe flakes using tailored copper oxide sublayers. By simply varying the sublayer annealing temperature, we achieved precise control over the iron morphology, obtaining uniform hexagonal hcp-Fe flakes on optimally prepared surfaces. Structural analysis confirms the successful stabilization of hcp-Fe, revealing a coherent epitaxial relationship between hcp-Fe(002) and CuO(-

Homogeneous Coating of Al-Doped Spinel Oxides on Ni Mesh for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

Industrial alkaline water electrolysis requires a catalyst electrode with high alkaline resistance and scalability due to the high alkaline concentration, frequent gas desorption, and high hydrogen production power involved. However, most high-performance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts are poorly adhered to conductive substrates, such as nickel foam or carbon paper, leading to detachment and performance degradation under harsh industrial conditions. Here, we report a simple and scalable strategy of "immersion-infrared drying-calcination" to fabricate Al-doped spinel oxides in situ g

Formation of hydrocarbons and carbon oxides in MXene reactions with water under varying oxidative conditions.

Titanium carbide/carbonitride MXenes have garnered significant attention due to their remarkable properties, versatile solution processability, and broad range of potential applications. However, when exposed to the environment, MXenes are susceptible to degradation, which ultimately leads to the formation of metal oxides, a process that may be regarded as either disadvantageous or beneficial, depending on the application of a MXene and our knowledge about the underlying mechanisms. Therefore, it is very important to understand the reactivity of MXenes in different environments and conditions.

Efficiently Degrading RhB Using Bimetallic Co3O4/ZnO Oxides: Ultra-Fast and Persistent Activation of Permonosulfate.

To address the issues of poor Co2+ regeneration and limited interfacial electron transfer in heterogeneous catalytic systems, this study proposes the synthesis of highly efficient and stable Co3O4/ZnO composites through the pyrolysis-oxidation reaction of Co/Zn MOFs for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) using activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The results confirmed that the catalyst exhibited a high electron transfer capacity, and the synergistic effect between the bimetals enhanced the reversible redox cycle of Co3+/Co2+. Under optimal conditions, complete removal of RhB was achieved in ju

Understanding Methanol Electro-Oxidation Pathways on Nd-Based Metal Oxides via DFT and Electrochemical Studies.

In this study, we report for the first time the electrochemical performance of Nd-based metal oxides (NdNiO (NNO), NdCuO (NCO), and NdZnO (NZO)) as electrocatalysts for methanol electro-oxidation. Results show that NCO exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance with a low onset potential of 0.97 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and excellent resistance to CO poisoning. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed a low charge transfer resistance (Rct) of 1.30 Ω, indicating efficient electron transfer kinetics. The calculated mass activity (MA) of NCO was 1.68 A/mg, sur

Heterogeneous Photochemical Generation of Hydroxyl Radical in Mineral-Organics Systems: Dual Roles of Iron Oxides.

Photosensitive organic molecules and semiconducting minerals have been widely reported to produce hydroxyl radicals (•OH) in aquatic environments. However, studies employing multicomponent systems remain limited. This study investigates the role of minerals in •OH photochemical generation in the presence of organic compounds with distinct functional groups. Using model compounds to represent key moieties in dissolved organic matter (DOM), we examined the capacity of both single-component systems (organic matter and minerals) and composite systems (ferrihydrite-organic matter) to generate •OH.

Optimizing the Electronic Structure of Iron Oxides via Nonmetallic Dopants for Enhanced Peroxidase Mimetic Catalysis.

Efficiently enhancing the activity and selectivity of targeted nanozymes is a challenging task, primarily due to the inherent structural stability and heterogeneous atomic composition of traditional nanozymes. Herein, theoretical design is carried out to select Fe-based oxides (FO) nanozymes with high peroxidase (POD)-like activity by incorporating different nonmetallic atoms (N, P, S, and B). Among these dopants, B emerged as a superior candidate because it could effectively tune the adsorption energies of *OH intermediates and *H2O2, thereby endowing the nanozymes with superior POD-like perf

Azirinyl-Substituted Nitrile Oxides: Generation and Use in the Synthesis of Isoxazole Containing Heterocyclic Hybrids.

The procedure for the generation of azirinyl-substituted nitrile oxides by the reaction of 2-(diazoacetyl)-2H-azirines with tert-butyl nitrite while preserving the azirine ring has been developed. The [3+2] cycloaddition of azirinyl-substituted nitrile oxides to terminal acetylenes produced azirinyl(isoxazolyl)ketones with various substituents in position 3 of azirine and position 5 of isoxazole fragments in a 51-91% yield at room temperature in DCM. DFT calculations and experimental data are consistent with the assumption that the formation of azirinyl-substituted nitrile oxides is accelerate

Experimental investigation of bluff body geometry effects on nitrogen oxides emissions from Cambridge stratified burner.

In this study, a series of experiments are done to analyze the effect of bluff body geometry on the NOx reduction of a natural gas-air stratified swirl burner. The stratified burner of Cambridge University is chosen to study the mentioned geometrical effect, and the geometry modification of bluff body is used as a simple method for NOx reduction, which can be easily applied to the systems using these burners, including gas turbines. The bluff body geometrical change to an annular bluff body is inspired by the fact that the areas in which the edge of the bluff body is in contact with the unburn

Associations of long-term exposure to nitrogen oxides with all-cause and cause-specific mortality.

Associations between long-term exposure to nitrogen oxides (NOx) and cause-specific mortality remain insufficiently explored. This study utilizes data from 502,040 participants registered in the UK Biobank. Time-varying Cox regression is used to estimate mortality risks associated with NOx. Cause-specific mortality risks, including non-accidental, accidental and 15 major disease categories across 103 subcategories, are assessed for each 10 μg/m3 increase in NOx. Positive associations are observed between NOx and mortality from all-cause (HR: 1.036; 95% CI: 1.024, 1.049) and non-accidental dise

Iodine Clusters in the Atmosphere I: Computational Benchmark and Dimer Formation of Oxyacids and Oxides.

The contribution of iodine-containing compounds to atmospheric new particle formation is still not fully understood, but iodic acid and iodous acid are thought to be significant contributors. While several quantum chemical studies have been carried out on clusters containing iodine, there is no comprehensive benchmark study quantifying the accuracy of the applied methods. Here, we present the first study in a series that investigate the role of iodine species in atmospheric cluster formation. In this work, we have studied the iodic acid, iodous acid, iodine tetroxide, and iodine pentoxide mono
