Lactobacillus plantarum AR495 is a widely used probiotic for the treatment of various digestive diseases, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, the specific mechanisms of L. plantarum AR495 in alleviating IBS remain unclear. Abnormal intestinal tryptophan metabolism can cause disordered immune responses, gastrointestinal peristalsis, digestion and sensation, which is closely related to IBS pathogenesis. The aim of this study is to explore the effects and mechanisms of L. plantarum AR495 in regulating tryptophan metabolism. Primarily, tryptophan and its related metabolites in patie…

BACKGROUND: The oesophagus is the first gastrointestinal (GI) tract involved in systemic sclerosis (SSc), followed by the anorectum.
OBJECT … y and in 17 patients anorectal manometry was not performed because of scarce tolerance. Oesophageal peristalsis was absent in 14 patients; its pressure and speed were significantly lower in 41 patients (p<0.001 and p=0.005, respectively). The maximum pressure and mean pressure (Pmax and Pm) of lower oesophageal sphincter were significantly lower (p=0.012 and …

OBJECTIVE: Uterine peristalsis is induced by synchronized contractions of the non-pregnant myometrium. The resulting periodic motions of the anterior and posterior walls of the uterus generate intrauterine motions which serve as transport vehicles for crucial processes of the early stages of mammalian reproduction. Among other duties, these flow currents are responsible for transporting the embryo to a successful site of implantation when the time window for implantation is open. In this study we investigated the transport characteristics of embryos with a new computational model.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: An association of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) with esophageal dysmotility has been described, however, the related mechanism remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate clinical and physiologic characteristics, including esophageal distensibility, associated with secondary peristalsis in patients with EoE.
METHODS: A total of 199 consecutive adult patients with EoE (age, 18-78 y; 32% female) who completed a 16-cm functional luminal imaging probe (FLIP) during endoscopy were evaluated in a cross-sectional study. FLIP panometry contractile response (CR) patterns were classified …

PURPOSE: Four different experiments in animals were performed to evaluate the influence of pyelo-ureteral surgery on the function of the upper urinary tract.
METHODS: Experiment I: In 17 female guinea pigs pyelo-ureteral anastomosis was performed microsurgically. Three months later, the ureteral peristalsis was investigated by measuring the intraureteral pressure and the in vitro activity of the renal pelvic and ureteric wall was analysed. Experiment II: 10 rats were used for microsurgical uretero-ureteral anastomosis. One month after surgery the pyelo-ureteral peristalsis was examined by vid…

Failure in the peristaltic mechanism that conducts urine from the kidney to the bladder can lead to hydronephrosis, a common birth defect associated with obstructive nephropathy. New animal models reveal molecular pathways important for peristalsis and point to the central role of the renal pelvis in urine transport.

In a subgroup of patients with non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) or mild oesophagitis, acid clearance is prolonged in spite of favourable gravity and normal or minimally impaired oesophageal peristalsis. Dysphagia is rare in this group but might also be present or develop after anti-reflux surgery. The causal relationship between prolonged clearance or dysphagia and oesophageal body dysmotility in these patients is not completely clear. New techniques are now available to assess oesophageal motility and transit and might help to detect more subtle defects underlying functional…

We wish to report a case of Jackhammer esophagus in a patient with laparoscopic gastric band, with confirmed resolution of hypertensive peristalsis on deflation of the band. This finding adds to the growing body of evidence that outlet obstruction plays an important role in the pathophysiology of Jackhammer esophagus, which remains incompletely defined.

The release of Schistosoma mansoni eggs to the intestinal lumen of Swiss Webster albino mice is dependent on the peri-ovular inflammatory cells, especially eosinophils. The cells corrode the epithelial basal membrane and provide an easily penetrated environment for the eggs, allowing them to be passively expelled by intestinal peristalsis.

The uterus plays an important and unique role during pregnancy and is a dynamic organ subjected to mechanical stimuli. It has been reported that infertility occurs when the peristalsis is prevented, although its mechanisms remain unknown. In this study, we found that mechanical strain mimicking the peristaltic motion of the uterine smooth muscle layer enabled the endometrial stromal cells to acquire contractility. In order to mimic the peristalsis induced by uterine smooth muscle cells, cyclic tensile stretch was applied to human endometrial stromal cells. The results showed that the strained …

METHODS: Forty-seven cases … years revealed satisfactory results in these eight patients.
CONCLUSION: In SMAS, if the reversed peristalsis is strong and continuous, and vomiting occurs frequently, the symptom can not be relieved even if the obstruction of duodenum is removed surgically. The key treatment is the relief of reversed peristalsis. The duodenal circular drainage can resolve …

In the last decade, we characterized an enteric neuronal subpopulation of multifunctional mechanosensitive enteric neurons (MEN) while studying the gastrointestinal peristalsis. MEN have been described in a variety of gastrointestinal regions and species. This chapter summarizes existing data on MEN, describing their proportions, firing behaviors, adaptation musters, and chemical phenotypes. We also discuss MEN sensitivity to different mechanical stimulus qualities such as compression and tension along with pharmacology of their responses.

Recently, there has been clinical interest in the effect of different body positions on esophageal motility. This study aimed to identify the effect of three different body positions on esophageal motility using high-resolution manometry. Thirteen healthy adults swallowed 5 mL of water in the upright, supine, and bridge positions. For the bridge position, each subject raised their waist against gravity, placed a cushion under their back, and bent their knees. The proximal contractile integral (PCI) and distal contractile integral (DCI), integrated relaxation pressure (IRP), distal latency (DL)
