Sound preference test in animal models of addicts and phobias.

Biased or too strong preference for a particular object is often problematic, resulting in addiction and phobia. In animal models, alternative forced-choice tasks have been routinely used, but such preference test is far from daily situations that addicts or phobic are facing. In the present study, we developed a behavioral assay to evaluate the preference of sounds in rodents. In the assay, several sounds were presented according to the position of free-moving rats, and quantified the sound preference based on the behavior. A particular tone was paired with microstimulation to the ventral teg

Heritability of non-speech auditory processing skills.

Recent insight into the genetic bases for autism spectrum disorder, dyslexia, stuttering, and language disorders suggest that neurogenetic approaches may also reveal at least one etiology of auditory processing disorder (APD). A person with an APD typically has difficulty understanding speech in background noise despite having normal pure-tone hearing sensitivity. The estimated prevalence of APD may be as high as 10% in the pediatric population, yet the causes are unknown and have not been explored by molecular or genetic approaches. The aim of our study was to determine the heritability of fr

Auditory-prosodic processing in bipolar disorder; from sensory perception to emotion.

OBJECTIVES: Accurate emotion processing is critical to understanding the social world. Despite growing evidence of facial emotion processing impairments in patients with bipolar disorder (BD), comprehensive investigations of emotional prosodic processing is limited. The existing (albeit sparse) literature is inconsistent at best, and confounded by failures to control for the effects of gender or low level sensory-perceptual impairments. The present study sought to address this paucity of research by utilizing a novel behavioural battery to comprehensively investigate the auditory-prosodic prof

Evidence for stimulus-general impairments on auditory stream segregation tasks in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Auditory impairments in schizophrenia have been demonstrated previously, especially for tasks requiring precise encoding of frequency, although it is unclear the extent to which they have difficulty using pitch information and other cues to segregate sounds. We determined the extent to which those with schizophrenia have difficulty using pitch information and other auditory cues to segregate sounds that are presented sequentially. METHODS: Ten participants with schizophrenia and nine healthy/normal control participants completed a battery of tasks that tested for the ability to pe

The effect of speaking context on elicitation of habitual pitch.

The purpose of this study was to investigate if there was an effect of speaking context on the elicitation of habitual pitch [speaking fundamental frequency (SFF)]. Six simulated speaking contexts were created (speaking during a voice evaluation, speaking in public, speaking to a peer, speaking to a superior, speaking to a subordinate, and speaking to a parent or spouse), and the SFF for 30 adult women with normal voice was compared across these contexts. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed a statistically significant (P < 0.001) effect of simulated speaking context on SFF, with po

Effects of peripheral nonlinearity on psychometric functions for forward-masked tones.

Psychometric functions (PFs) for forward-masked tones were obtained for conditions in which signal level was varied to estimate threshold at several masker levels (variable-signal condition), and in which masker level was varied to estimate threshold at several signal levels (variable-masker condition). The changes in PF slope across combinations of masker frequency, masker level, and signal delay were explored in three experiments. In experiment 1, a 2-kHz, 10-ms tone was masked by a 50, 70 or 90 dB SPL, 20-ms on-frequency forward masker, with signal delays of 2, 20, or 40 ms, in a variable-s

One source for distortion product otoacoustic emissions generated by low- and high-level primaries.

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) elicited by tones below 60-70 dB sound pressure level (SPL) are significantly more sensitive to cochlear insults. The vulnerable, low-level DPOAE have been associated with the postulated active cochlear process, whereas the relatively robust high-level DPOAE component has been attributed to the passive, nonlinear macromechanical properties of the cochlea. However, it is proposed that the differences in the vulnerability of DPOAEs to high and low SPLs is a natural consequence of the way the cochlea responds to high and low SPLs. An active process

How do tympanic-membrane perforations affect human middle-ear sound transmission?

Although tympanic-membrane (TM) perforations are common sequelae of middle-ear disease, the hearing losses they cause have not been accurately determined, largely because additional pathological conditions occur in these ears. Our measurements of acoustic transmission before and after making controlled perforations in cadaver ears show that perforations cause frequency-dependent loss that: (1) is largest at low frequencies; (2) increases as perforation size increases; and (3) does not depend on perforation location. The dominant loss mechanism is the reduction in sound-pressure difference acro

A procedure for the early detection of noise-susceptible individuals.

Currently used threshold audiograms fail to detect the early stages of noise-induced hearing impairment. Threshold shifts may reach 10 to 15 dB before the impairment is detected. Loudness difference limen and critical band phenomena should provide an earlier and more sensitive test for such hearing impairment.

Enhanced Contour-Deviant Mismatch Negativity and Mnemonic Representations in Older Musicians.

Instrumental music performance is associated with enhanced perceptual processing as evidenced by auditory discrimination and speech-in-noise perception. However, little is known about the extent to which auditory perceptual processes support cognition in aging. We investigated whether music training enhances perceptual precision in 26 older amateur and professional musicians (62-85 years, 16 females) and 25 older nonmusicians (61-82 years, 13 females). Participants completed a novel auditory mnemonic discrimination paradigm while electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded. The mismatch negativi

Paediatric otitis media with effusion is connected to deficits in music perception.

PURPOSE: This study tested the hypothesis that children with otitis media with effusion (OME) attending a primary school are at risk of impairment of their musical skills. OME is characterized as an inflammation with accumulation of secretion in the tympanic cavity, leading to conductive hearing loss. METHOD: Perception of music in children is assessed using the Montreal Battery of Evaluation of Music Abilities (MBEMA). Listeners are required to judge whether two successive melodies are the same or different on tests of scale, contour, interval and rhythm. They are also queried by a memory te

Speech and voice rehabilitation in selected patients fitted with a bone anchored hearing aid (BAHA).

With the Birmingham osseointegrated implant programme there have been several patients with severe pre-lingual conductive hearing loss. The majority of these have been patients with Treacher Collins syndrome. There are characteristic features of speech and voice in those with long-standing conductive hearing loss. In addition, the associated abnormalities of jaw, teeth and palate may amplify the problem. There may be spontaneous improvement in features such as voice pitch, quality and intensity following the fitting of a BAHA. However, in those with a pre-lingual hearing impairment, speech the

Effects of short-term endotracheal intubation on vocal function.

Transient voice change associated with endotracheal intubation has generally been attributed to vocal fold trauma. To assess the role of altered vocal fold function in transient voice change, a study was designed to evaluate the audioacoustic, endoscopic, and laryngostroboscopic characteristics of the postintubation voice. Vocal function of 10 patients undergoing short-term outpatient surgical procedures using general anesthesia and endotracheal intubation were studied preoperatively and postoperatively. A second group of 10 patients that did not have surgery or general anesthesia was used as

Functional Distinctions between the Auditory Cortex and Frontoparietal Network in the Encoding of Speech Features.

Neural representations of acoustic features that are key to speech perception have been studied extensively within the auditory cortex (AC), but their representations in higher-order cortical regions remain poorly understood. This study investigates the cortical encoding of three acoustic features in spoken vowels to delineate the functional distinctions across different cortical regions. We used ultra-high-field functional magnetic resonance imaging while human participants of both sexes listened to vowels and were asked to identify three aspects: vowel identity (probing spectral content), sp

The Effect of Telephone Transmission on Voice Quality Perception.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: This study aims to analyze the effect of telephone transmission on the voice quality perception of subjects with dysphonia and seeks to contribute to the use of perceptual voice analysis in forensic context. The main hypothesis is that the auditory perception of voice quality differs according to the acoustic quality of the speech material. STUDY DESIGN: Eight male speakers were simultaneously recorded directly by a digital recorder and over a mobile phone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A perceptual experiment containing 21 speech samples was used. The samples were analyzed v

Neurophysiology of synesthesia.

Synesthesia is an experience in which stimulation in one sensory or cognitive stream leads to associated experiences in a second, unstimulated stream. Although synesthesia is often referred to as a "neurological condition," it is not listed in the DSM IV or the ICD classifications, as it generally does not interfere with normal daily functioning. However, its high prevalence rate (one in 23) means that synesthesia may be reported by patients who present with other psychiatric symptoms. In this review, I focus on recent research examining the neural basis of the two most intensively studied for

The next generation of Nucleus(®) fitting: a multiplatform approach towards universal cochlear implant management.

OBJECTIVE: This article provides a detailed description and evaluation of the next Nucleus(®) cochlear implant fitting suite. A new fitting methodology is presented that, at its simplest level, requires a single volume adjustment, and at its advanced level, provides access to 22-channel fitting. It is implemented on multiple platforms, including a mobile platform (Remote Assistant Fitting) and an accessible PC application (Nucleus Fitting Software). Additional tools for home care and surgical care are also described. DESIGN: Two trials were conducted, comparing the fitting methodology with th

Auditory temporal processing and dyslexia in an orthographically consistent language.

We examined two hypotheses relating auditory processing to dyslexia in Greek, an orthographically consistent language. Study I examined the "P-center" or "beat detection" hypothesis (Goswami et al., 2002) in a sample of Grade 6 dyslexics, Grade 6 chronological age (CA) controls, and Grade 4 reading age (RA) controls. Study II examined the "temporal processing," or "rapid auditory processing" hypothesis (Tallal, 1980) in a sample of Grade 7 dyslexics, CA controls, and in two groups of CA matched children with low frequency discrimination or low tone sequencing performance. Both studies indicate

Detection of the acoustic reflex below 80 dB HL.

A new method for detecting the acoustic reflex that utilizes standard otoacoustic emissions recording techniques is introduced and discussed. Two successive identical tone bursts of 100 ms duration and 10 ms interstimulus interval are presented in the occluded ear canal at a repetition rate of one per second. If the acoustic reflex is elicited, the contraction of the stapedius muscle is delayed with respect to the onset of the first stimulus. Hence, the acoustic compliance in the ear canal decreases primarily during the second stimulus. The difference of the microphone signals produced by the
